One of the most destructive first that ever occurred in Si Paul, broke out yesterday be tween twelve ami one o'clock r. la the frame block, ou 8t Anthooy street, near the post office, but recently completed, and jointly ownml by Mesas. Filer sod M'Clcxo, aod Dr. J. H. Srcwanr. The building was two stories In height, end had a front on St. Anthony stmt of ninety-seven feet. It contained on the first Boor, five storeeooam; and rooms in the sec ood story, occupied by different individuals at offices. The fire originated in the basement of the building, immediately under Mr. John Kdkoxd ■ox's store. A small foresee had been located outside of the building, by that gentlemen, es a convenience in beating iroos. The high wind which prevailed daring the morning, drove the fire under the room occupied by Mr. Edmcsd eox. nod set on fire a lot of shavings which had been left there The flames spread with light ning like speed, and in Icm than ten minutes the roof tell in, and naught was left of the block of buildings but e mess of smouldering ruins. We never saw e building destroyed with such rapidity as the one yesterday. The only article we heard of, as being saved, was the trunk of one gentlemen rooming in the second story ; he was in the building when the fire commenced, but ell that he could do, was to secure e trunk and make his own escape -- In two minutes from the tune the smoke was first discovered, the entire building Was wrap ped in flames ; and such was the intense heat, that it was impossible to approach within a hundred fast of the burning building Thu wind was blowing from the south-east.' and very fortunate is it. that such was tbs case If Til? kliitl' - lr»cf eh*!Jgld, cither tar above, ou St Anthony street, or the post of floe, eiprem office, and all the houses in that neighborhood, would have been destroyed As it was, the flames and burning fragments were blown by ths wind on unoccupied ground.
