Terrible B-»«*1e Picture. Au officer writes to the Bnffalo Courier the following description of one of the late battle-fields: . Towards evening at the battle of Robin son’s Cross Roads, where the fiercest of the “ Eight Days’ Battles ” was fought, I went over the field. To the unaccustomed eye, it was a vast concentrated horror. No sound was heard save the ambulances as they wended their way in search of the wounded, and all was quiet as though no terrible cannonading had just rent the clouds or death scream chilled the air Blood ’ everywhere, bending down the blades of grass with its coagulated weight, and metamorphosing them into tiny bioo l lances. Blood in pools, where unfortu nates had parted with the ruddy life- Btream, and had been dragged off tor bu rial. Blood upon leaves, and shrubs, and trunks of trees, spattered upon them by iron messengers of death. The 6tones were bloody, and little brooks ran crimson with the lives of hnndreds. Tender forest flowers had sunk to the earth enc&rnadined with blood, as though shrinking from the awful carnage that had raged above them. Dead bodies lay in heaps—bloody and gashed and tom with frighttnl wounds—so calm and quiet—while numbers lay around with their brains crushed out by the un couaidering hoofs of cava.ry, spattered o’er ererything far and near—b.oody and hor rible. Here lay a young man with both legs mangle 3 off by a shtll, swimming in his own blood. His hands were clasped across his breast, his lips were apart, and he seemed to have passed from life with an appeal to the mercy seat upon every fea ture. Dead lay in the hollows—in the beds of brooks—behind knolls—supported by stumps, or fallen nearly np:igbt against heaps of brush, all plashed with the ensan guined hues of violent death—bloody and ghastly. And then the sun went down, its face a gory red, as though reflecting that crimson field of destruction—silking to his rest a 9 though satisfied with the day’s slaughter—with “man’s inhumanity to man. ” —Private Jobn Callahan, Jacob Snower and Thomas Johnson, belonging to the 2d New Jersey cavalry, were executed recently at Memphis for the crime «*f rape.
