4/ fPS w^w$ 4 MILACA_ZEPHYRS. MILACA, Sept. 8, 1891. A case of diphtheria is reported at Mib. Jay'b house. Miss Mabel Knapp is visiting friends at Monticello. 0 Jahr returned from the lake, on a short visit, yesterday. Mr. F. Henderickson is building a neat little residence on avenue. Mrs. A. Rudquist is very sick at present and not expected to live. Manuel Waldhoff, of Foreston, passed through town last Monday. Rev. Taylor is the proud father of a boy, born last Tuesday morn ing. Mrs. H. C. Hmes is enjoying a vibit to her old honie in North Dakota. Miss Mary Wilts, of Oak Park, is visiting with her sister, Mrs. S} lvester. Wm. E. Lee is now travelling salesman foi the Mille Lacs Lum_ berCo., and a Mr. Whitback is now manager heie. The upper room in the school hoiibe is being thoroughly finished and heieafter we will have a graded school, which is sadly needed. We were glad to meet Frank Libby, sr., one of the solid home steadeis of the lake region, upon our streets yesteiday. He was on his way to attend court in Prince ton. We are glad to notice that the firm of Wood Bros, have estab lished a permanent business as eye and ear specialists, in Fergus Falls. Louis Wood of our town is one of the company. The people of Milaca sadly feel the need of a mail route between here and the lake region, and nothing we are sure would accom modate more people for little money than this. A magic lantern entertainment was given by a couple young men at the chuich last Friday and Sat urday nights. Views from the old world. Everyone speaks well of these two gentleman and their views. John Scietting, postmaster of Opstead, this county, was in town yesteiday. He brought a few bushels of wheat which he raised on his claim which is as fine a grade of wheat as we have seen for some time. A "tribe" of Indians are exhibit ing grotesque capers in front of the Milaca House, nightly. They have medicine to sell, and by the number of patrons they have it would seem that a certain class of people are not yet dead. M. P. Meigs admits that his band does need a little more prac tice, but he says that just as soon as he gets the howl out of his mouth he can sing very sweetly. He wishes us to say, however, that he never turns to the "title page" of a music book to finish his sons. The Mille Lacs Lumber Co. have sold about 40 farms to old country people, who are now onApplications their way here. The Company will build houses for these people upon their farms and are now doTAXES ing so. In about ten days the population of Mille Lacs county will be augmented by about 300 Scandinavian settlers. M. MARIUS. SPENCER BROOK ITEMS. SPENCER BROOK, Sept. 8, 1891. The piairie wolves are numer ous here and can be heard howling almost any night. Walker Bro's. and Will Barton joined drives on a car load of cat tle and hogs last Monday. Charlie Men ill is in this vicinity threshing, also Andrew Lundeen. They are good men for that busi ness. Miss Ida King commenced a term of school in district No. 12,thirty last Monday, and Miss Emma Chapman the same day in fhe German settlement. A. G. Nicholas, Chas. Cleverly, id Chilson and Will Nicholas were up liver hunting bee's last 1*3% ^satoiN&a^ &**&.*, I week. Don't know what success they had. The woods are full of bees and hunters, Mike Dean, proprietor of the Central Hotel at Hinkley, and two Swede men -were here chicken hunting two clays last week, also Charley Johnson and Mr. Hop wood from Minneapolis. They got a fine lot of the feathery tribe. Fieeland Bockoven, John Ole son, J. Chapman and Gus Smith went up on Bogus Brook last week hunting bees, and found five bee trees and had a royal good time. While there they found a number of sections of land with beautiful hay meadows. The up land is well adapted to tame hay. If some of our young men that are roaming around or spending their time in the city would settle on such lands they could in a few years become independent. J. R- SOUTH HARBOR NOTES. SOUTH HARBOR, Sept. 3, 1891. Jfro&t has made its appearance back from the lake. Messrs. VanCourt and Baker have gone to Princeton to prove up on their fine claims. A. C. Wilkes and family have gone to Milaca. Mr. Wilkes is called to attend court in Princeton. Messrs. Kelly and Degan have finished haying, having put up about thirty tons of splendid hay. H. H. Mansur, the Elk River photographer, has been spending a few days around the lake taking views. The odd section question seems to be the only drawback that re tards extensive improvements around here. It is expected that before cold weather South Harbor can boast of a steam saw mill, as prepara tins are now being made to secure one. The Robbins' correspondent has been misinformed in regard to the burning of the haying camp on the big meadow. No supplies were burned to amount to anything, neither was the crew obliged to quit on account of the burning of the camp, they worked six days after the camp was burned. BACH-E-LOR. I have opened my photograph gal lery in Princeton and am prepared to do work equal to the best. Baby photos a specialty. Copying, enlarg ing, ink, oil and water colors done to order.
