Some interesting and instructive facts bearing tipon the subject of im migration have been brought by the in vestigations of the industrial commis sion in New York city recently. One of these was the statement of an immigra tion official that, during the years 1880 to 1890 45 per cent of the arrivals at the port of New York, or nearly 2,000,- 000 persons, announced their destina tion as the metropolis itself. This of course could not be true, for the popu lation of New York increased only 400,- 000 in the years stated, but there was enough truth in it to show the tendency of immigration. It was also stated by the immigration Officers 'that the pa drone system is still a feature of Italian immigration in spite of all efforts to break it up, and that assisted immigra tion is still an evil that shows signs of no material abatement To these sources we owe, it was said, a large and con tinuous infusion of the pauper and criminal classes in our population!t PUTNAIl FADELESS DYES produce the fastest and brightest colors of any known,,,dye tuff.
