married to Henry Harshman of this

Tom Burns arrived here from New
York on Monday morning to spend a
15-day furlough with home folks. He
has been on the battleship Wyoming
ever since he enlisted with the navy
15 months ago, and in all that time he
was stationed at the Orkney islands.
He witnessed the surrender of the
German fleet, returning to the states
with the American Atlantic fleet last
week.
Mrs. J. F. Bardowski had for her
guests on Monday her mother, Mrs. F.
Katchmazinski, and sister-in-law,
Mrs. Joe Skaja, both of Foley.
Geo. Demaris of Foley is enjoying
a short furlough from the navy. He
visited here on Monday with his uncle
and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Joseph.
Mrs. Russell Foley of St. Paul
spent Christmas here with her sister,
Miss Clara Kubic.
Mr. and Mrs. L. K. Nelson enter-^

A number of our young people at
tended the Christmas tree and pro
gram at the Lutheran church in Snake
River last Wednesday evening.
Louis Lavigne passed away on Mon
day, December 23, after a short illness
from influenza followed by a severe
attack of pneumonia. Mrs. Lavigne
has also been quite ill but is recover
ing. Mr. Lavigne for a number of
years conducted the blacksmith shop
at Santiago and was liked and respect
ed by everyone who knew him. He
leaves a wife and son %o mourn his
loss, also three brothers, Robert, John
and Joe, and two sisters, Mrs. Dave
Mayberry and Mrs. G. Secord.
Mrs. John Carlson of Santiago will
entertain the Missionary Aid society
on Thursday, January 9.
The teachers of the" following
schools around here departed for
their homes to spend their vacations:
Miss Marjory Redman, district 48, at
Sauk Rapids Miss Bessie Lightfoot,
district 15, Santiago, at Cokato, and
Miss Emma Hon*, Connelly school, in
Glendorado.
Mrs. John Torgerson fell on the
ice outside her home and badly frac
tured her hip bone last Friday. She
is about 80 "years old, but is doing
nicely.
Miss Ruth Howard of Snake River
is visiting her sister, Mrs. Jalmer
Jensen.
Mrs. Andy Reed, while chasing tur
keys, fell and fractured one of her
ankles badly one day last week. She
will be confined to the house for some
time.
Miss Agnes Kittelson is home for
the holidays. She is attending busi
in college in Minneapolis.
Christ Jensen received the sad news
through the Red Cross that his son,
Jens, died on September 30, soon af
ter landing, from pneumonia and was
buried in England. Jens was born
and grew to manhood in Glendorado
and was an industrious young man
liked by everybody. We sympathize
with his parents, brothers and sis

A Red Cross party was given at
Vineland hall on Saturday evening. A
large crowd attended and everybody
had a very good time.
John Martin, who has been at Dun
woody institute, arrived home-on Sat
urday.

Miss Alice Jorgensen departed on
Monday for Princeton, where she will
take a course of training in nursing
at the Northwestern hospital.
Mr. and Mrs. Stuart Oliver 'and
Axel Johnson went to Milaca Monday
for a few days' visit.
We noticed in last week's Union in
the "Twenty-Five Years Ago" items
that there was some prospect of the
Indians' removal to White Earth,
where they have, their allotments.
About fifteen years ago, when the
Indians were paid $40,000 out of the
public funds for their so-called im
provements here at Mille Lacs lake,
we had the same kind of promise, but
the "noble" redskins are still with us.

The board of county commissioners of Mille
Lacs county met pursuant to adjournment
with Chairman Carl Eckdall presiding and all
members of the board present except F. W.
Thomas, commissioner of the 4th district.
Meeting called to order at 11 o'clock a. m.
by the chairman.
Pending: the examination of claims the
board took a recess until 1 o'clock p. m.
One o'clock p. m. board reconvened as per
adjournment with all members of the board
present.
It was moved and seconded that the follow
ins apropriations be made from the county
road and bridge fund, to-wit:
$200.00 for grading and graveling the town
road between sections 20 and 21, township 36.
of range 27, town of Greenbush, in the 2nd
commissioner district, and
$200.00 for improvement of town line road
on north line of section 11, township 40 of
range 27, and south line of section 81, town
ship 41 of range 26 in the 4th commissioner
district, and
$200.00 for improvement of town line road
on north line of section 11, township 40 of
range 27, and south line of section SI, town
ship 41, of rarge 26, in the 5th commissioner
district, and
$200.00 for improvement of town bridge be
tween sections 18 and 19, in township 41 of
range 26, in the 5th commissioner district.
Said appropriations to be expended under
the direction of the county commissioners of
each district in which such appropriation is
made, and to be charged against each com
missioner district receiving such appropriation
or appropriations.
Motion carried.
On motion the bond of Walter Peltier as
county auditor for the term beginning Jan
uary 6th, 1919, was fixed at the sum of
$2,000.00.
The following bonds of county officials for
the,term beginning January 6th, 1919, were
presented to the county board, examined, ap
proved and ordered filed with the register of
deeds.
Bond of Harry Shockley as sheriff in the
sum of $5,000.00.
Bond of Wm. V. Sanford as judge of probate
in the sum of $1,000.00.
Bond of W. C. Doane as county attorney in
the sum of $1,000.00, and the bond of Walter
Peltier as county auditor in the sum of
$2,000 00.
The bond of A. G. Osterberg as register of
titles in the sum of $5,000.00, for the term
beginning January 6th, 1919, was presented
to the county board, examined, approved and
ordered filed in the office of the clerk of the
district court.
The bond of the Soo State Bank as county
depository was presented to the county board,
examined, approved* and ordered filed with
the county treasurer.
The following claims against the county
were duly audited and allowed in amounts as
