Model School Inetructor
Before entering the Taylor**
home at 1351 Thoma* Avenue, St.
Paul, we heard the two young
eon*. James louder and Glenn
Curtis letting everybody know
they did NOT wish to go to bed.
They are two very active Uttle
boys, and like most children, never
want to go to bed. But they went.
While waiting for Mrs. Taylor,
we talked with her mother, Mr*.
Ida Mae Murphy.
Before Mr*. Taylor was seated
we wanted to know about her
many activities. In answer to our
"snooping’* and questioning, we
learned. "Well, I haven't done any
thing outstanding.
"I graduated from Central High
School; oh, the University of
Minnesota? I graduated from
there in HH3. Yes, I did major In
physical education and my minor
was speech
"Now, what is so Interesting
about that T”
We thought It very worthwhile
to learn she la at present the in
structress of exercises, modern
dancing and fencing at the Helen

has held thia position three years.
•'What was your first position
after graduation?" we asked. She
said that had been some time ago,
but, "I was a girls worker at the
Hallie Q. Brown House and from
there I spent 18 months as assis
tant director of the West Hide
Community Center In Asbury
Park, N. J.”
She seemed to think that was
enough, but we remembered she
was In Peoria. 111., so we told her
to continue. Thus, we found out
Mrs. Taylor was directress of
girls activities at the Carver Com
munity Center In Peoria
We knew she liked this job very
much and very nonchalantly (we
thought) wondered why she came
some. Without a moment’s hesita
tion. she said her mother, a widow,
seemed to need her and she came
home to be with her.
"No. Mother didn't ask me to
come home, but I could tell from
her letters she was lonesome and
needed me, so I very gladly came
home to be with her and my
younger brother, Illchard.”

lor in HMB. Since my marriage I
haw been busy keeping house and
being a wife and homemaker.”
When we interviewed a friend of
hers we heard Janabelle was not
only a faithful member of Pilgrim
Baptist church, but bad been a
member of the choir and at pre
sent is a inembirr of the I-ad les
Aid. Her mother is also a mem
ber of this church club.
Janabelle said. "Yes, I am fin
ancial clerk of the church and my
duties as such made me unable to
continue in the choir. Oh. that ?
Yes, J am vice president of the
ladles Aid and I see I might as
well tell you everything you want
to know "
For a few minutes the questions
flew and the answers came back:
"Yea, at present I am a past
president of the Credjafawn Social
club; and at present president of
the Credjafawn Credit Union.”
"Miss Revolda Wright, St An
thony Ave, was advisor of the
Baptist Youth Fellowship and I
assisted her.”
We "had" to Interrupt our in
terview to listen to Miss Martha
Zena Flowers, singing on the Ar
thur Godfrey talent scout show.
Miss Flowers, soloist at St.
Mark's Episcopal church in New
York, won the Marian Anderson
award Those of you who heard
her must have been a s proud of
her as we were,
Yes. we heard the whole show!
•Innabelle was saying, "I am a
member of the recreation commit
tee at the Main YWCA and you
have all of it when I tell you I
helped the Hallie Q. Brown staff
with their summer program at
their Day Camp at Highland Park
this past summer.”
Before I could ask what she
knew was on my mind, she told
me she was able to keep busy be
cause her mother was so lovely
about helping her take care of
the children and her husband is
also a very good assistant.
We think It very commendable
for a young mother to keep active
and abreast of the times and her
mind alert

within our hearts a natural In
stinct to be a good Samaritan, but
our demands of dally life make us
put off day after day the little
kindnesses we might otherwise do.
Have you ever noticed that the
vast majority of shut-ins are

gentlet courageous folk who ask
so very little and very often when
you go to see them, you notice
they are the ones who often give
so much in return.
You tell them how sorry you
are to find them ill. and you are
surprised to hear them tell you ot
their plana and hopes when they
leave the hospital. They say how
very much they would like to get
out doors and breathe the fresh
air, to Just walk along the street
and see people, they would love to
attend church on Sunday ano
while you listen you begin to
think.
These things they desire so to
see and do are F REE and yet, you
with a fair amount of health take
them for granted. You leave the
sick room a better person, realiz
ing that "the beat things In life
are free."
You feel so grateful because
you are able to "breathe the fresh
air. etc.," that you plan to send a
few magazines to the hospital or
go see that sick boy, girl, man or
woman who is lonely because they
are far from home. Do we take
the time to do these things?
Maybe we will start soon.
