Justice Johnson, of St. Paul, has de cided In the case of the Odd Fellows' Re view against John Gaffey, that if a sub scriber desires to have a' paper discon tinued to his address, he must firset pay. the publisher the amount he owes for subscription, and make a request that the paper be discontinued to his address. The evidence in the case brought forth the facts that Gaffey subscribed and paid for the- Review lor one year, and that he continued to accept it after his sub scription had expired. Later he changed .address -without notifying the pub lisher, and claimed not to have received the paper. This, the court held, was through no fault of the publishers, who received a judgment for the amount due and costs. IVhlte- Ma.n.*B Country. The above is the title of a book -which has just been published by Rev. William S. Brooks, pastor of S Peter's A. J E. church, Minneapolis. It description of a visit, of the author to Europe and espe cially td Sweden and Norway, the "land of the Midnight Sun." It is quite inter esting in every particular and abounds with quiet wit and humor, together with much valuable information. It is dedi cated to his wife, of whom he says: "Who has been not only encouragement but in spiration." There Is a peculiar charm about the style of the author's writing which makes one feel he was listening to an oral presentation of the subject mat ter. And, as Rev. Noah Lathrop says of the book, in a prefactory note, "It reads to me as though it had been prepared for. oral delivery, and I think he might do well to deliver tt in that manner." THE APPEAL takes great pleasure in commending the work as very pleading and instructive. Metropolitan Restaurant. It Blooms Ouly at Night, and Ia Blighted When the San Rise*. There is a tree in Persia to which the name of "the sorowful tree" is given. Perhaps because it blooms only in the evening. Wfce-i the first star appears in the heavens the first bud of tbe sorrowful tree opens, and as the shades o night advance and the stars thickly stud the sky, the buds continue gradually opening until the whole tree looks like one immense white flower. On the approach of dawn, when the brillianey Of the Stars gradually fades in the iigb,t of day, the sorrowful tree closes its flowers, and ere the sun is fully risen.not a single blossom is visi ble. A sheet of flower dust, as white as snow, covers the ground around the tree, which seems blighted and with ered during the day, while, however, it is actually preparing for the next .nocturnal festival. Toe fragrance of the blossoms is like that of the even ing primrose. If the tree is cut down close t6' the roots a new plant shoots up and attains maturity in an incredi bly short time. In the vicinity of this peculiar tree there usually grows another, which is almost an exact counterpart of the sorrowful tree, but less beautiful, and, strange to say, it blooms bdly in the daytime.Philadel phia Inquirer. GREAT SOUTH AMERICAN LAKE One of the Wont Places for- 8ewlcllll| In th World. Lake Titicaca is unique among the waters of the world, says lHarper's Magazine. Its extent is fourteen times that of the Lake of Geneva, and the level of its surface is 12,545 feet above the sea Along its eastern shore runs the main Cordillera, rising aloft at ita southern end into the mighty Mount Sorata, whose broad expanding gla ciers seem to lift themselves like sil ver from the Waves. The shores and islands of the lake werewho knows how long ago?the cradle of a re markable civilization, or even series of civilizations. Perhaps latest among them was that of the Inca tribe, which, rising in thfe place, spread northward over the hills an down a valley to Cuzco and thence stretched forth its conquering arm over a vast area whose exact limit can no longer be defined. The Incas looked back to Titicaca island aB tbe sacred spot whence emerged their legendary found ers, Manco Capac and his consort, Mama Occlo Huaco. The traveler on the waters or round the shores of the lake beholds many a monument of de Darted greatness and industrial pros perity. He feels that he is looking upon historic ground and the dim gla mour of a well-nigh forgotten past sheds luster upon peaks and ranges doubtless untrodden by human foot, but often travelsd by human eyes, and in whose names yet linger the fos silized faith and poetry*' of departed men. The waters of Titicaca lake re flect no longer the splendor of Inca re ligious pageants they are plowed in stead by thr%e bustling steamers, on one of which we voyage 111 miles to' the Bolivian port of Chililaya." ^For tune -favored us with a day brilliant and alm, when the waves lay asleep and all the hills were clear.
