RSLHUC RV TH i-RRAPH SlxMtt tLltL Circular to UWox.it. I 1MB www w m yTT I rjgj gcw I fAccording to Dr. Cheever, Mr. Lie coin said in the month of February, 1801, "if 1 adopt a wrong policy, an opportu nity for correction will occur in four years. Then I can be turned out and a better man put in my place." The people of the North have long since discovered Lincoln was the wrong man. The human slaugh ter pens of his creation in Georgia and Tennessee, in Mississippi and Louisiasa, nd on the rugged hills and in the valleys of Virginia attest this. He has preven himself the most complete tyrant of mod ern times, and the Northern people have determined tc try a new man. Hkalth of Lee's Army. According to . "Richmond letter.writers, there is as much sickness in the army of Northern .Vir ginia, in proportion to numbers, as there n;is been at anv tim irca..thii. first year of the waT. TTfcknes8 is not of a malignant, type, however, being chiefly intermittent fever, and disorders of the bowels. The terrible campaign in which the men have baen engaged, the recent almost unparalleled term of .drought and hot weather, constant duty in the trenches, absence of vegetable food "and fruit, as well as the lack of good water, and the chill an I f?ver producing dicriot i which the tr ops are encamped, have all conspired to impair the health of the armv. fgrGen. Marmaduke, who uses the Yankees so roughly on the Mississippi and Arkansas rivers, is a native of Sabine county, Missouri, and a son of ex Gov. Marmaduke. He is a graduate of West Point, and at the cooaiuencement of the war ws a Lieutenant in the regular army. He wa.i elected Colonel of the first regi ment n.ised at Jefferson City to resist Gen. Lyon's contemplated attack on the cjt itoh At the battle of Corinth he gal lantly distinguished himself while com manding a brigade. Gen. Marmaduke has been in battles and engagements almost without number, through all of which he has escaped, notwithstanding he always places himself in the very thickest of the fight, often compelling his staff to remain behind him Of his courage is hazarding nothing to say itiat it is impossible for a man to be mofe brave ; to one unacquainted with him, it seems like reckless desperation. When he took command of the cavalry he had to contend with the greatest prejudices, but now there is not a more popular com mander in the Confederacy. If it be true as reported, that some of the im portant towns of Arkansas have again fallen into our hands, Marmaduke will be able to move to a new field. The Tallahassee. Ag&'Hunter, the miserable scoundrel who committed saoh wanton and barbaric acts in Virginia, has become disgusted at his own monstrous conduct and retired from the cause of subjugation. The Mercury of Tuesday ays : A few minutei of nine o'clock on Sun day nibt the operations of the siege were veried by rather aingular but abor tive attempt, on the part of the eny, to destroy Fort Sumter. The night, was quite dark suffioiently so to allow one of the enemy's boats to enter the harbor and gain 4 easitipn at ornear the south west angle f the fort. There the euetn; fxploded a verv powerful torpedri, charged, it is supposed with several hundred pounds of powder, and intended to blow up that portion of the fort, where they suppose' the best cover is afforded for the ganisons. The explo sion was a-very violent one, throwing up a great volume of water, but without harming the noble old fort in the slight est degree. Our James Island batter es immediately opened on the spot whence the light proceeded, but the night was bo dark that their aim was necessarily conjectural, and they were soon signalled by Captain Hugueniu to discontinue. Whether the enemy's boat escaped in safety is uncertain. The firings since our last report has been as follows : Battery Gregg fired 87 shots and the Swamp Angel Battery 23 shots at Fort Sumter. Snjlivan's Island and Battery Wagner exchanged five shots each. Battery Sirakius fired 36 fhots at the Swamp Angel Battery, and Battary Wagner 52 shots at Battery Sim kins.
