Mr. Mcliunn made a very favorable impression on the congrt gatiou at this place. We think conference ha scut us an acceptable man." We were gratified to receive a tele gram a few days since from Col. Mr. David L. The lire originated in the nursery, and by means of a defec tive flue, was communicated at once to the roof, from which (lame and smoke issued in several parts. Our gallant fir. men never did more efficient service. The damage to the house is about $!1000, fully covered by insurance. There was no insurance on the furniture, which was considerably injureU ty water and re moval. In our last issue we thanked the Street Committee for putting the side walk to the cemetery in a good and pas sable condition. The Queen of the Carnival. Miss Susie Richardson, the beautiful daughter of our esteemed cx-townsman. Col. B. Richardson, was the Queen of the Carnival in New Orleans last week. From a description of Rex's Ball, in the Times-Democrat, we copy so much as relates to her, which will be read with interest by her many friends hereabouts: "The Queens of previous years have been so beautiful tliat a lady who as sumes the title runs the risk of a crucial comparison and criticism. In the pres ent instance, her Majesty's charms did not pale before the memory of her pre decessors, but, robed in a royal garb of white satin, looked every inch a Queen. She had chosen her maids of honor with great good taste, and although she stood .n il,- princesx among them, their glorious multiform dazed the eye. They were also robed in court dresses of white, with handsome floral offerings in their hands and the King's colors nestling in their hair. By some unlucky chance the Queen's jewels had miscarried, but her Gracious Majesty looked none the less lovely on that account." Enterprise Courier: Unfortunately for the State of Mississippi the question of rail road Supervision was not settled by the last Legislature, and it will be a living issue in the coming election for Senators and Repre sentatives. The people of the State will never be satisfied until some plan is adopted, and they ought not to be. Wo do not think the people desire legislation that will in any way cripple the railroad interests, but they do desire a just and equitable plan which will prevent extortion and unjust discrimi nation ; and they are not willing to surren der the priueiple that ail corporations are subject to supervision within the limits of the Constitution.
