We had the pleasure a few morn ings since of meeting Miss Lizzie Lon egan, a bright and interesting young lady Irom Jackson, who now has charge of the telegraph office at this place. Ve would be glad to see more of our yourg ladies turn their attention to this new held of operation that is now being opened up lor them and for which they are so eminently fitted. Raymond (ia rotte, 4 Prof. A. J. Nlarks, of New York, gave an exhibition of paintings of the Holy Land, at the Baptist church on Monday night, and at West Jackson En gine Mouse on Tuesday night, for the benefit of the new Methodist church. His descriptive lecture va- very entei- tainingand instructive. Bible students should not miss such an opportunity of having muny ol the localities and events in the Land of the Book brought so vividly before thcni. Rev. Dr. J. L. Tucker preached his last sermons on Sabbath as rector of St. Andrew's church in tlii- city. His Easter morning discourse was based Upon the communing of t he two disc'- pies on their way to "the village named tSmmatls" an exceedingly appropriate theme for such an occasion. We learn thai Hi'. Tucker had prepared a farewell discourse, but feared to trust himself to its delivery. His congregation have eeriainiy given nun anumtant reason to make him feel that he was appreciated,: and the separation is one of mutual and great regret. He leaves to-morrow nlghi i lor his new charge in Mobile The Grand Opening At Steadman' j The local sensation of yesterday was t'" grand opening at Stedman &Co'a., in their enlarged store, comer State and Pearl Streets'. The weather w as all that could be desired, and the ladies iu large numbers took advantage of it, bv visit - "... lug this mammoth emporium ol dry , i . , 'I goods ami lashion. I he- Millinery 1 'e- partment was, ofoourse, the great attrac tion, and the expressions of admiration of the styles, and approval of the prices, that this reporter heard during a stay of live minutes, satisfied us that this new departure of this enterprising firm is al ready ia success. Madame Blise, the ac complished French lady who is in charge of this department, must have felt gratified by the many Compliments paid to her good taste in the selections and her skill iu arranging the great var iety of ladies' head-gear on exhibition yesterday. A practical feature of the display was that several of the most beautiful hats and bonnets were labeled "sold." There are thousands of dollars annually sent from this city for this dan ot goods, and those who order must depend upon a mere chance of being suited. In the Millinery department of Stedman & Co.. they have the advan tage of a personal inspection of the latest novelties afforded by the great centres of fashion. Paris and New York. "This is a bold venture," remarked one of the lady callers yesterday. "Yes," said another, "but never venture, never make." We are confident thai Stedman & Co., will "make" by this new feature in their business, and our ladies can make it a success, if they will. But Jackson is not the only place to lu bene fited by this new enterprise. The ladies ol the surrounding tow 11s, wo are sure, will give it thcinipprovnl and patronage. At any rate, they should not fail to call and see for themselves. When We think of it. it is a curious thing that none of our large dry goods houses have before now added a millin ery department. Almost every dry goods store is supplied with hats and caps for gents ami boys, but the ladies have not been so favored in their oppor tunities for making selections. The establishment of ibis millinery department Wffl, of eOVlp Bploy- ment to several ladies of our city, and for that reason alone it deserves the most u, r .n pf, f. r, , , .-,j ... un r.. y.NKn in llie Ill.Vlli store was very ieaiitilul ami included the latest and most elegant fabrics for spring wear. Accomplished young la dies were in charge, who not only un derstood how to display goods to the beat advantage, but how to sell accord ing to the marked price. That is a fea ture of Ktednian's. The prices arc not marked in Oreek, Hebrew, Ittin, or phonetically, but in plain English figures that need no translation. Stedman & Co. keep their business so fully before the public, in a judicious and liberal use of printer's ink, that we deem it unnecessary to go into further details. All department appear to be well stocked, and quick sales and very small profits'will continue to lie the rule. A nimble penny is better than an idle sixpence is an axiom satisfactorily test ed by this firm. Thirteen clerks are employed, ami the spacious area of forty by one hundred feci is utilized to the very best possible advantage.
