The rapidity win which this dread diseirf ecc taspKeaea its work renders any treatment most acceptable whieb is likely to prove successful, and hence the value of the recent communica tion Of Dr. John Chapman to the Journal d Medicine, of Paris. Be lieving "that the approximate cause of all th'j phenomena of cholera, be f ire the bUge of reaction, is hypere mia (active sanguineous congest ti :i), with ronsequent excessive ac tion, i ' i!, s spinal cord an of thegan piioni'; or sympathetic nervous sys tem," the characteristic features of the doctors treatment consisted in- tbe app ication of neat to the general surface of the body as persistently as possible, an I, stasuHaaetsaaiy, theap plie ition ofe W by means of a spinal lee bag ul ;ig the whole of the spinal eolaaan wh eh is coextensive with the spinal : r.l, and that part only, dur ing the pros nee of vomiting, purg ing, cramps, or algidity. It would be practicable for any wealthy farmer, one willing to ex- Cnd a few thousand dollars for the nefit of his neighbors, to import a man from China or India say On a fire years eon; met t iawtruet the neighborhood; and we venture that a pot made an for the purpose by a number of planters would return in terest in a few rears. A little tme and patience are requisite. Look, for instance, at what has been accom- by the initiative of the British Gov ernment in India. 1 be natives did not take to it; but nevertheless Brit ish private capital did, as soon as the Government showed the way. With in ten rears there were over fifty gar dens in private hands in Assam, and the culture has been introduced r-to Darjeeling. The success was so great that it led to over-speculation and such an unhealthy hothouse foreing as resulted in disaster; but after re turning to a normal state the enter prise flourished beyond calculations The Indian tea rates higher in the London market than Chinese article, and the exports from India have risen from almost nothing thirty years ago to 45,138,111 pounds in 1830. It isa mistake to suppose that tea is a trop ical plant. A specimen of the preen tea plant lived some twenty years in the open air near London, being fin ally killed in the severe winter of 1837-8, when the thermofieter fell to 4i degrees Fahrenheit. In China it larrown say from 23 degrees to eu degrees, but mostly from 24 degrees to 35 degrees. It ought to be prac ticable anywhere in Mississippi where there is a deep rich toil and firstrate drainage the latter is important. It ought to be seecessful tn South Carolina and Southern California. The Government has, we believe, a tea farm in South Carolina, but the present Commissioner of Agriculture does not seem inclined to do much, if, indeed, he is doing anything toward developement. There is, or at least was, a tea farm of some forty acres in Georgia, where some samples were made, but we do not know whether it is still in operation. As we import about $50,000,000 worth of tea per annum, chiefly from China and Japan, there is a home market for every pound Southern gentlemen may please to raise; and if the South ask it Congress will no dcubt restore the duty to assist in promoting the cul ture. Southern Agriculture gets lit tle enough encouragement from the Government; but the tide is turning, and our demands will not lie ignored hereafter. Mr. C. Jfenehr, in a re cent private letter to the editor of the Picayune, says: '"That we shall produce tea in this country, and we shall became independent of oriental Asia and save our country from pay ing it an annual tribute of $25,00'), 000 to $30,000,000, I have not the slightest doubt." This prophe-tic op timist has studied the subject practi cally as well as theoretically and is in bis enthusiasm for all that concerns the future-well being of the South, as truly Grecian in spiritual force as in name and blood, and we hope that his latter days, like those af the Spar tan King Henelaus, wiJi'be passed in peace and pi parity. -New Orleans Pievaune. The man who could "scribe," and who laid out the job, got perhaps ee dollar ami fifty cents. The machinist got from one dollar and fifty to two dollars per day; and ha wh'j got the t we dol lars was a fortunate man; and for that time he was a competent man. Lab orers bad fifty cents per dayund in haying time, when several days ordi nary work must be crowded info twelve, fourteen, or possibly sixteen hours, thev got seventy-five cents. Special workmen, apt at any jobs, one dollar. Now this is a fair showing of the value of labor forty vears ago What was the relative value of housing, fuel, food and clothing? Rents were low. A good boose ter the times cost from twenty-five to fortv dollars per year, r uel wood waa somewhat less than it can be furnished, as coal now, at any place remote from the mines; say tor an ordinary fatmly'six cords ot hickory, twenty-four dollars; now four tons of coal (two fires,) about equal. Clothing can be bought cheaper now than h eboid I futy years ago, andit is cheaper In more than one sense. Perhaps it would be better for the country at large if better clothing at higher pri ces should be the rule. It is scarcely necessary to add to "how we lived forty years ago," any statement of how we live or how we might live now. In tne north, where the season is short, those varieties only should be planted that ripen rap idly, and in the South those should be planted that ripen etewiv. But the poesibiiisy of trust iu September is not the only consideration that should govern the selection of seed corn. In the latitude of Missouri and the States north of ns, we rarely have a severe frost before the 25th of September, or the first of October, and this danger is so slight therefore, that farmers do not need concern themselves about it, Still there are other things to be taken into the ac count in determining the character of the seed selected for planting productiveness, hardness, weight aud keeping qualities, tvery large corn raiser in Missouri ought to carry on a little experimentation for himself, year after year. Testa of new vari eties from distant regions may be made on a small scale, and when these reveal superior qualities in a new va riety, it may he adopted. But u found as a rule that the variety lone grown in a locality is the best for that locality, and every farmers exneri ence strengthens this rule. But the local variety itself may be improved by careful selection carried on, year after year, with reference te the time of ripening, size of the ear, weight oi grain, and productiveness, in every field there is to be seen here and there an unusually fine, heavy ear, matured early, well filled out with full grain compactly set to the tip, and bending down with its own weight. These ears are nature's hints to the farmer; they are the product oi a taw ot growth by whieh vital vigor manifests itself consnicuouslv These noble ears should be marked as the seed corn for the next season; and when similar ears are found in the field next season, thev should again be selected. This process car ned on through successive years will give a gradually improving grain, possessing the very qualities the far mer desires, and spare him the risk and cost cf high-priced varieties from distant regions which he knows noth ing about. St. Louis Republican. Surgeon-General Barnes, about three j ears ago, heard of an allopath ic physician iu Virginia, who itgis alleged, never failed to cure typhoid fever. As there were many patients in the United S'atesarmy dving with that disease, Gen. Barnes decided to visit the arcu-nt Virginia doctor and learn how he tre oted typhoid patient.-. When he met the old gentlemen, Gen. Barnes inquired: "What is the mode of treatment by which you succeed?" "Y.y, replied the venerable phv- sician, "it is the simplest thug in the world. All you have to do is o get the patient's stomach in good order, and.then diet on buttermilk; that's ail. I never lose a patient, if he isn't in a collapsed condition when Igct to him." Surgeon-General Barnes tell me that he adopted the buttermilk treat neir among the soldiers in the army, and has found it most efficacious. It ap pears that some years ago the med ical scientists of FVauc and Kussin, compared notes aa to the use of plain sweet milk in the treatment of their typhoid patient, and concurred in the decision that milk not only is a won derful efficacy in typhoidal cases; but in the treatment of fevers generally An eminent medical man, a professor in a New York eclectic medical col lege Dr. Newton informed .your correSDondent a few weeks he tore he died (bis death took place about a year ago) that he had found to be substantially true all that is set forth 1 a. j-n , , . rejauvejiD piam swept miia ana Pur termilk, and that the latter "acted like a charm in cases of ,n,u6ju3 debility.
