Hhoelng Farm Horses.
Xumliered with other questions that
are nrgncd hy practical, sensible men,
and likely never to come to any decided
settlement, is tho one, "Shall farm horses
bo shod or not? ' That this controversy
must lc settled by each man for himself
lies in the fact that some horses nnder
certain conditions can go without shoes.
and In trnth are better without them; but
that no horse under all conditions can
work or travel barefooted. In an article
on this subject In The American Agrtcui
turlst appears the testimony of various In
dlvldunls In difTereut sections of the
count ry.
A correspondent writing from Iowa
considers it an unnntural proceeding to
shoe a horse. II says:
If one examines the hoof of a colt that
has never been shod It will be found that
there I a sharp edge on the under side.
The object of this is that th animal may
go on smont h reads. It the horse Is never
shod this protection remains as long a
the animal lives, but in shoeing it baa ta
be cut oft ami It will never grow as per
rect again as it was naturally." This
correspondent believes that unshod horses
ran do all necessary farm work in both
winter and summer. A correspondent
from Ohio writes: "My advice Is don't
shoe your horses. Keep the colt's feet
properly trimmed while growing, as you
would shut, a fruit or ornamental tree.
ben, he is old enough to work h
rill be able to do without shoes, unless tt
be for some special purpose.
t rora n iscotuun a correspondent writes
of his experience with both shod and bar
fooled horses: "Onr roads are not very
hard, being conntrv roads, where gravel
la not plentiful. My horses are sound and
their feet good, but when I tried to work
them without shoe I fennd tt would not
do; their feet soon became tender and
sore. If I were obliged to use them every
day, even In winter, I should hava them
hod; for there a-e days when th roads
are In such condition that it would not be
safe, neither could tliey draw a load with
out them." ,. .
Many farmers do not give snfnctent at
tention to their bones' feet, though they
may curry and rub their hide well. Th
feet, however, should have close Inspec
tion and care, for if these become nn-
und there Is little work to be gotten out
of the animal. To this end the floor and
bedding should always be kept dry and
clean, that manure may not become caked
nnder the f.s, and every morning the
hoofs should lw examined and freed from
any such accumulation. A soft frog
should be guarded against, for it causes
an animal to go lame with very slight
cause. A little alum water and brine
applied once a week hardens the frog.

There remains not a docbt about the
economy of supplementing tha manure
pile of the farm with commercial fertllia
ers. On few if any farms In tha older
states Is there enough manure made to
keep the soil In good tilth, aonsequeotly
resort must be had to green manuring and
artificial fertilizers. In the use of the lat
ter much money hi saved by men who sit
down and do a little thinking before or
dering such fertilizers as are to be bought.
First should be decided as nearly as is pos
sible what elements are specially deficient
in the soli; second, what elements off
puuii iisju are specially required roc I tie
crop to be grown; and, lastly, how much
of these lacking elements can be supplied
from the manure heap and compost pile
at home. Some crops, as Irish potatoes,
for instance, thrive U tter in soil that is
enriched by an artificial fertilizer than
with barnyard manure; and these crops,
therefore, are more economically fed by a
commercial fertilizer, the manure being
reserved for crops that needed more. .
In green manuring the value of . pea
vines at the south and clover at the north,
as an improver of soils, has been repeat
edly proven. Pea vines and lime furnish
a very effective means of Improving and
maintaining the pnxluctlveness of soils
In which ph'wphoric acid and potash art
not too nearly exhausted. The sugges
tion Is made that tome gain la effected by
utilizing ss much aa possible pea vines,
clover or any other valuable forage crop
aa feed for stock first, by turning on the
cattle to crop it, and then their droppings
are saved along with the roots and stub
ble that are eventually plowed under for
a fertilizer.

primeval forest east of the city is being

CoL Johnson last summer erected a
dwelling on the open ground near his
garden, this side of Irvington; the sun's
rays beat down on that house blisteringlr,
and the colonel concluded to protect it
with trees. One Bunnell was found who
declared he could transplant an adjacent
forest to the colonel's yard. The trees
vary from ten to eighteen inches in
diameter. Bunnell rigged up a stout
wagon, fastening to the hind wheels an
immense lever, forty to fifty feet long,
thick and strong. This was lashed at
one end to the wagon. Around a tree to
be removed be dug a trench, the radii
being three or four feet On one side he
dug a twelve inch trench close to the
tree, and into this trench he backed his
wagon wheels with the erect lever. The
lever then stood parallel with the trunk
of the tree, and the two were lashed to

Never, probably, in the history of Paris
has the picture market been in so de

A few great b, like Bougureau,
Meissonier, ' ajamin Constant, find
ready purr .dfor their work at very
high prir But the rank and file have
the grr jt difficulty in making both
ends meet. If the import duty on pict

American amateurs would probably come
forward in increased numbers, but until
then there seems little hope of any im
provement. As an illustration of the ex
isting depression maybe mentioned the
result of the sale, after death, of the
works belonging to M. Jacquinot, the
artist expert, which has just come to an
end at the Hotel Drout Two thousand

A Philadelphian saw a club footed man
under the influence of liquor, and kindly
assisted him to the bouse where he said
be lived and rang the door beU. When
the door opened two young women, who
had evidently been expecting him, caught
dim without ceremony, threw him down
in the entry and, while the elder sat on
him, the younger deliberately set about
unscrewing the only leg that appeaxed to
bs sound, but which proved to be arti-
acul. After detaching it she marched
311 with it, with the remark: "There,
fou fool ; I'll put this away where .yon
won't get it in a hurry, and may be you'll
stay sober when you have to stay in the
house." It turned out that the only
means of preventing an over indulgence
in liquor was to deprive him of his aru-
Scial leg, which was a substitute for a
natural malformation. Chicago Herald.

The Japanese Can't Swear.
CoL George P. Biasell, of Hartford,
Conn., spent last summer Japan. The
most remarkable feature 6f that country,
be says, lies in the fact that its language
contains no profane or blasphemous
words. "I can readily understand," he
remarks, ' ' why the practice of 'hari-kari'
is so common in Japan. When a man is
abused or loses his collar button and is
mad all the way through, so mad that
Lis very soul boils within him, if at such
time he is the victim of a language which
will not let him vent his rage even in the
mildest epithets, why then I can readily
see how suicide might be a soothing re
lief." Kew York World.

An earthquake occurred in Iceland in

The immigration of children to Canada

The manufacture of bicycles and tri
cycles is the latest development of Ger

is now hardly a town in Germany with
out its velocipede club.
