Tuesday night at 2 o'clock. He had
made a long ami hard fight against, the
i grim monster, hut he a suffered for
several years with cancer and his last
days were those of sull'erilig and pain.
His remains were interred in the Kob-
inson graveyard on Wdniday after
noon ut 2 o'clock.
He was a native of this county, hav
ing been horn near where he died nearly
seventy-five years ago. Whe.t the war
came on le became a member of Co. H
"ith Misr. Keg., Lowry's brigade. He
leaves a wife, who was Miss Robertson,
and a son, Tom Maxey.
Negro Seriously Cut.
A negro named Locket, from Mr. C.
S. Field's place in Southwest Noxubee
cut and seriously f ounded last Fri
day while returning home .from the
hanging. The cutting W: s done by a
man named Edmonson, who lives in
Oktibbeha. A warrant has been issued
for his arrest. The difficulty occurred
near the overhead bridge. What
brought about the difficulty is not
inown, but it is said that Edmonson
and two companions were in an intoxi-
ated condition and fighting humor and
tne cutting was without provocat.on.
it was thought at nrst that the negro
would die, but we understand that he
now has a fair chance to recover.

The Stork.
A ten-pound girl was born on Septem
ber 24th to Mr. and Mrs.'E. S. Dale.
The Matrons' Card Club met at the
home of Mrs. A. Klaus, on Tuesday af
ternoon, its first meeting since organ
izing for the winter. Mrs. J. II. Wil
liams was prize winner. Elegont re
freshments were served.
Mrs. James H. Williams will enter
tain the Whist Club Friday afternoon.
Mrs. Witty, of Winona, is the guest
of her sister, Sirs. W. M. Lamberson.
Messrs. At Rush and F. M. Stevens,
menbers of the Walthall brigade and
Mr. A. P. McCaskill, went to Meridian
last week to attend the Confederate
re-union. Mr. Rush says they were
piost hospitably even royally enter
tained by the Meridianites. That the
lid was entirely and completely off.

Four children of Ed. Finch, livinr
across the river, were very sick last
week with dvptheria. All recovered
though three of the children were very

Eitlcn by a Snake,
W infield, son of Marshal Sargent was
bitten on the foot Thursday night by a
high-hmd m irassin snake, while in
front of tie residence of Lester Wil
liams. In a short tune he was a very
sick and a badly frightened boy. The
usual antidote was given but it refused
to stay down. After an hour or two
suffering he was given relief.

and Rev. Mr. Mosley are growing in
interest and power daily. '1 he citizens
of Macon who miss hearing Dr. Jones

selves if they have not heard Dr. Jones
since he has been in town. Don't fail

The citizens of Macon should appro
eiate what Dr. Jones is trying to do in
the way of building up its manhood and
wom.-.nnood by showing his willingness
to preach, not oidy in the house of God
but standing upon' the street proclaim
ing the riches of Christ and calling upon
men to repent.
May the voice of God speak in his
own language, "To him that knoweth
to do good anddoeth it, not to him it is
sin." He that hath ears to hear let
him hear."

Found Dead in Jail.
Dave Dtigan, eighty odd years of age,
was found dead on Thursday morning
last in the old jail, where he had been
ilaced on the' Saturday before a raving
maniac. Like all eases ol that kind he
leveloped wonderful strength, and it
took five men to put him ir. his cell af
ter he was brought to the jail. He
continued to rave for several davs but
calmed down a day or two before his
death. lie seemed to be in his usual
condition Wednesday night, but staled
to the jailer, when he took him his sup
per, that he would die during the night.
On Thursday morning, when the jailei
carried him his breakfast, he was
found silting in an upright position.
on a window sill, with his leet. on tne
lloor. He had been raving for a week
but he evidently died without a strug
gle. -
The coroner held an inquest and thi
jury rendered a verdict that became U
his. death from natural causes.

ous that every teacher ami student will
do your best to make the attendance

Mrs. King is going to open a class
specially for young men tomorrow. A
cordial invitatiou is extended to all our
young men who are not attending else
where. No preaching services will be
held either morning or evening. The
pastor asks for the presence of each
member at the Crevivai services, being
conducted by Dr. Jones at the Presby
terian church.

he would kill him. Mr. Smith Holt,
whose room adjoined, heard the nein-o's
voice and went to ,nvi stigate. Whet
the negro heard him coming he jumped
out of ti e front window, and as Mr.
Holt opened the door lived at him twice
through the window blinds, the 'powder
burns showing on the slats. Hoth the
shots went through the facing and miss
ed Mr. Holt about three inches. A
bright light was burning add Willie
lien thinks he recognized the negro as
Calvin Fleming, who works at Mr.
Uolt's cotton yard. The negro came to
work as usual and was arrested at the
yard this morning at 7 o'clock by Mar
shal Sargent.
