POETRY. From the Taunton Sun, A REFLECTION AT SUNSET, I saw the radiant God of day, Descending in the glowing west; 1 mark’d his last expiring ray, As low he sank, to seeming rest, And though he had his chariot driven, Beyond the Lills to ocean’s bed; A glow divine illuwin’d heaven, And o’er the scene alustre shed, 80 when the Christian’s race is run, Though low he slumbers *neath the ground; His virtnes like the setting sun, A heavenly radiance shed around. ‘I, I'. W. Fia.n the Prov. American THE IMMERSION, The ceremony of baptism by immer-, sion, performed inthe Apostolic mode so plainly pointed out in the interview be tween Philip and the Funuch, isimpres sive and highly imposing, when admin istered in an appropriate manner, We witnessed one of these ceremonies not | long ago, in a village situated near n! clear salt bay, with its freshening breez es and bright saud beach, around which was assembled a multitude of attentive spectators. The candidates were youth ful females, modestly clad in the plain woolen garments adapted tothe Nerc-llm-! ny, and animated with a religions enthu siasm, a sell~sacrificing devotion llmt! rendered them more attractive than if’ decorated for a bride, ‘ The occasion was one that could not fail to impress the most thoughtless mind. The clear strong voice of the youthful clergyman, rising above the dash of the waves that were forced up the shelving beach, with just enough of motion to give spirit to the scene, the solemn attitudes of the listening throng; with the rever ently uncovered heads of the males, from the hoary locks of age to the bright hair of the strippling—and the swell of voices' in the hymon that followed the [)l'il.\‘('l'-—-—} the exhortation of the graceful pieacher! to those who had taken wpon them hnl_\'i vows Lo persevere—and his invitation to the humble penitents to come forward in| confidence, and be buried with Christ in| baptism, and his warning to the careless’ sinner—in all these, combined, there was‘ that kind of thrilling interest which warms | the blood, and stirs up cmotions that I':\n-‘ not but be salutary, even il they pass a way with the asccasion, and {rom whi(-h‘ lasting and eternal good would come, if they were permanent., He who could look upon such a scene with scorn § lev ity, must be wanting in the sources wlu;nce thought and feeling spring in the Soul, Among the group of eandidates there was one more timid, as she was more lovely than her companions; & yet stmngl in faith, she followed her pastor fearless ly mto the water, and after receiving the impressive benediction, sunk beneath the wave, as gently zs il falling upon a couch, There was a slight gasp for breath, as she again stood upon her feet, and then a bright smile lighted up her features with a holy confidence before the truth of which, the boldest infidel must have shrunk, had he dared to mock the hallowed feeling. As she came up out of the water, the youthlful devotee broke forth in a full rich strain with the following stanza: “Oh Jesus my Saviour, to thee I submit, With love and th:mksgi'\iu;_r. full down ut'thy feet, In cacrifice ofier, my heart, life and e | ' tion do. ats, : &2 in ginghs -4 Men's beaver an Pluin ginghams,—figur ? wloves, white buck do. led do. . & . e Furniture and cnn{nhrlcé\ L,?,‘il:;: hsg | dimity, common do. ) 3, ; | (ll"ll',h d cotton dam- 2 Random, raw silk, _nnd Ll"'f‘" cop v half hose; cotton ditto, ot A o R raw silk do.from ‘Russia and bird's .eye¥ ;nl.n::i( = di"P"f. id d(‘?(:(:mn umbrellas, (':ul.lhl’lr‘i.—--plul an ¢ o ' . d"!‘ e Q,l inens, cotton sheeting, Linen cambrie, nent 0 ing, 'Linen cambrie hdkfs. /.> slnmng.lnlnflvs, ging 'Merino, Thibet wool &(;) hams, checks, \ .
