04 Retvriois wirn Mexico.—An angry correipondence hes tuken place between the M tj;'i'c:m Sr(-:l'emry of State Rejon, and our M i.uis.tlvrv, My. Shanuon ; who has in very Lll;t‘idt‘d terms announ ced to the Mgxican government, that courteous language must be used to wards him and his government, The} Secretary charges the Government of the United States with falselvod, arti fice, intrigue and projects of usurpation; and more than insinuates that Gen. Jackson originally sent Gen. Houston _ o capture Texag, with ultimato views of Annexation. Mr. Shannon asks the Secretary of State to withdraw his letter, which the Secretary refuses to do, and rciterates all the foul abuse of ihe American government contained in his first communication. In this position affairs stood, when Gen. Duff Green leftin the ““Woodbury,” with dispatches for New Orleans. ““As to the rumored suspension of diplomatic relations between the (}uv-i crnments, by the act of Mr. Shannon, we find (saysthe N. Y. Express,) noth ing corroboratory, in the papers before us. The Woodbury, which left Vera Cruz oan the 17th, and which may at any moment arrive, will bring the offi cial despatches, and then we shall learn more.” The President elect, it is said, has re cently made a speech at Nashville, in which he admonishes hic political friends not to exult over their opponents, and says that the opinions, judsments, and rights of all, whether of minorities or ma jorities, are entitled to equal respect and regard, While it will bo his pleasure to represent faithfully the principles and policy of his party, he declares that he shall not regard himself as the represent ative of a party only, but ofthe whole people of the U. States; trusting that the future policy of the Government may be such as to secure the happiness and prosperity of arr, without distinction of party. This sounds very well. We shal see. g The spirited and manly letter of the Hon. J. P. Kexxeny, of Md. will be found entire in this day’s paper. Regishry Tax.—We refer ajl interest cd to the advertisement of the Collector of Taxes in this day’e paper. That tells the whole story. The Court of Common Pleas, is now in session in this town. Be_7 A terrible Nortl;-east snow storm was raging last night, as our paper went to press. £ 7 The awful ciy of “fire,” was sounded through our streets a little after sunsct last evening. The fire proved to be a chimney,(which burnt very freely, but fortunately did no damage,) on the Ferry wharf, in the house of Mr. T. J. Peckham. We undersi.nd the chimiey was swept (thoroughly, as Mr. P. had reason lo believe,) a feww weeks since, by a colored person who follows that business here. We hope he does not sweep many chimnies in this way, as our town may be greatly endangered at this inclement season. The Position of the Whigs,—The Mo bi'e Advertiser defines, in the following paragraph, the true position of the Whig party, and expresgec their future deter mination ; We have seen, in no Whig qnnrtor,! any indication of quailing under the re cent defeat, or abandoning the cause. The Whigs are made of sterner and bet ter stuff. In adversity, asin prosperity, they will stand shoulder to shoulder--an united band of brothers. In adopting the principles of resistance to improper for «ign influence m the clections, and an improvement of the naturalization laws to effect this desirable object, they make no change in, or surrender of, their own principles, nor do they move one inch from their own position. Above all, they eschew and repudiate, in this connection, utterly and entirely, all religious or sec tarian views, and will have nothing to do with any move that is to bring religion, or any of the religious sects, into the pol ies of the country. This, with them, is a settled point, Postvrsren Geserar's Rr.rom.-—-: This report is, at the present time, of more than common interest, on account ‘of the agitation of the question of a deci sive change in the rates of posiage. Late and Important from Buenos Jyres i —By the barque Creole from Buenos, Ayres, which place she left on the 14th. ol October, we learn that great ex citement prevailed there on aceount of the United States frigate Congress hav ing taken tha whole' Buenos Ayrean Sauadron. The reason for this step, ie smd to haye been that some vesse! of the Squadron had fired doto the iJ. 5. Coxvicriony or Rev, Ma. 'l‘uuul:'.'.—i This gentleman, indicted for stealing slaves “in Baltimore, was convicted on Monday of last week, of the offence charged, It will be remembered llmt] Mr. Torvey was formerly pastor of the Richmond n;reei Church in l’rovidence,{ where he hae many attached l'riends.i and who will deeply sympathize with him in his distress. His wife is the daughter of Rev. Dr. Ide, of Medway,i and grand-daughter of the late Rev. Dr. Famons. In speaking of the trial of Mr. Torrey, the New York Ta'ibune! says : . | “He was defended by Nathaniel Cox and Reverdy Johnson, Esqs. Ile was brought into Court in irons in the pre sence of his young and beauntiful wife and her father, who went to Bultimore from Massachusetts to attend the trial, The scene was most affecting, and mul titudes who felt that "Torrey had acted in a wholly unjustifiable manner could rot repress their sympathy for a woman placed in such trying circumstances.’ The evidence against him was so clear as scarcely to admit of a doybt.— 'lt was proved by scveral witnesses, who saw him on thp roud, that he took slaves from a carriage from Ba'timore through Harford county to Pennsylvania. The peculiar color of the horses and many other incidental circumstances conspired to render it certain that he had done the acts charged in the indictment. Rever dy Johnson is said to have made an elo guent plea in his behalf, and that, too, without fee or reward, but the Jury on Monday brought in a verdict of guiity. The counsel then moved in arrest of judgment and for a new trial, but we presume there can be little ground for hope that he will escape a leng term in the penitentiary.” Nothing but the parden of the Gover nor will preventit ; and even if'this were given him, it will scarcely avail, as he h . . aft: s of o . e’ | is indicjed in Virginia for similar ofl‘en-} ces, and a warrant is already made out' and pluced in the hands of officers in : o AP | Baltimore to arrvest him, ifliberated, and hand him over to the authorities, in‘ Virginia. This case will no doubt be a warning to others. | Frcem the Boston Drily Advertiscr, Tur Messaoe.—We do not propose to go. into an elaborate discussion of the topics of the President’s Message, or of the views pre-| sented in it. We beg leave, however, to re-| “unrk very briefly upon two ot three of the promainent features of the document, - The ¢laborate, but common place eulogy ‘upon the character and aperation of our form ‘of government, ig onlircfy misplaced; and it ‘,opcrutci as a severe trial of patience to those 'vho are looking for something pertinent to ‘the occasion. [t is surprising that those who 'have occasion to write legislative’ addresses, (which are necessarily long irom the namber lof topies to be touched upon, should think it ‘necessary, so elnborately to protract their te ‘diousness, by mtrodocing disscrtations on ‘topice whicli have nothing ta do wiih the bus iiness in hand. Had there been reason to an ‘ticipate a ser,ous proposition to set aside our forta of government, and to substitue another, there might have been some propriety in urg ing upon the attention of Congress the beau tiful working of the present system, especial ly if he had reason to believe that it was a subject to which the attention of the mem bers had not been particularly attracted, | " I'he general tone of the review presented inthe Message, of the foreign relations of the country is pacific, and at the same time independent, and therefore satisfactory. There was little of information to be commu nicated, and this is the more gratifying, as we thave fortunately little to ask of foreign na tione, ! .y | wl thr o | The principal topic, and the on'y one in, iwlsich the President appears to have taken ‘any deep interest, ils that of the annexation of| “T'exas.
