Max Maretzek’s opera troupe are to give sixteen operas at the Boston theater, com mencing next Monday night, with Ernani. The custom house at Boston will be closed on New Year’s day for the completion of re pairs. John Hawthorn, a sailor belonging on board the U. 8. ship Ticonderoga, was found mur dered on Prince street, Boston, at 1 o’clock a. ii. on the 30th. J. Albert Sprague fell through an aperture of the floor of the lower story of the unfin ished City Hall in Boston, a distance of 12 feet, from the effects of which he died about an hour after. Mrs Church of Newtonville, while shop ping in Boston, on Tuesday, met with an extraordinary accident which is described in the Journal. A frightened horse suddenly turned a corner on Court street, coming on the sidewalk. The hoop skirt of Mrs. C. cauaht in the runaway carriage, ami she was i dragged with lightning speed on the ice and i pavement from Court street through Bowdoin square, and down Cambridge street p.ist Stamford street, when the horse was stopped and the lady extricated. She was not killed, but fearfully bruised. BRISTOL COUNTY. Isaac Arid, formerly of Squawbetty, in the vicinity of Taunton, has just received a sen tence, in Washington, of two years’ hard la bor on the government works, for desertion from the 7th regiment. Rev. 17 C. Moulton of New Bedford re ceived on Christinas, from his parishioners, valuable gifts of furniture to the amount of SBOO. Of eleven obituary notices in the New Bed ford Mercury, on the 29th, the ages average eighty years and ten months. The oldest person was ninety-two years, seven months, and all but four were over eighty years old. HAMPSHIRE COUNTY. The managers of tlie Christmas ball at Belchertown didn’t want to show partiality, and so invited all the clergymen in town. The receipts were $192. The unusual number of 66 deaths have oc curred Mt Belchertown this year, or one to annul every 42 inhabitants. Three persons have died who were over 90, and twenty-one who were under 20 years of age. Arms & Bardwell, hoop-skirt and portmon aie manufactures in Northampton, sold a lot of goods to a firm in St. Louis, in 1860. The breaking out, all business was destroyed in that vicinity, and the firm settled up their ac counts for fifty cents on the dollar. A day or two since Arms & Bardwell received a check for the balance of the principle, together with interest, The members of the firm are Ger mans, and they took an active part in sustain ing the government, when loyalty in that city meant something more than mere empty words. BERKSHIRE COUNTY. A house at Pittsfield, belonging to Norton Packard, was destroyed by fire on the night of the 23d. FRANKLIN COUNTY. Eight citizens in the north part of Sunder land will petition the legislature to be set off to Montague’. They are aggrieved because Sunderland has abolished school districts. MAINE. * The Lewiston Journal tells the story of a chap without money, travelling on the Grand Trunk Railroad, pledging his trunk, (whbh was very heavy) to the conductor, for bis fare, and leaving it at the Danville Junc tion. After keeping it for a year, it was opened and found to contain a good chunk of wood Spurious threes upon the Manufacturer’s and Traders' bank, Portland, are in circu lation. Rev W. Lovejoy, Universalist minister of Dexter, has enlisted as a private in the Ist Maine cavalry, and leaves for the seat, of war Hext week. The Portland glass works, which have re cently gone into operation, have erected four buildings, and have already a successful busi ness. » The company has a hundred thousand dollars invested. On the 2Gih, Edwin Jones, 12 years, Jos. Huston. 8 years, and A. B. Little, 7 years, were drowned in the Damariscotta river,Dam ariscotta. They were skating, and ventured too near Hie channel. * Twa barns belonging to J. K. Levenselier, of Waldo, containing twenty-five tons of hay, with all his grain ami farming tools, were con sumed by fire on the 6th. VERMONT. Albert 11. Gallatin, M. I)., has been ap pointed to the professorship of natural science in Norwich University, at Norwich, Vermont. Mr. Wales Boss of Moretown, was thrown oft from a load of wood on the 26th inst., by his horses taking fright, and instantly killed. NEW HAMPSHIRE. Charles A. Giles of Northfield died last week from injuries in being thrown from a wagon in consequence of his horse being frightened by the spreading of an umbrella. A son of J. B. Hunnels of Concord, aged abouf 14 years, was, it is feared, fatally in jured on the 3d, by coming in contact with a passing team, while sliding. CONNECTICUT. The name of the post office at Curtisville (Glastenbury) has been changed to Naubuc. The Center church at New Haven have raised the salary of Dr. Bacon to S3OOO. They also made him a Christmas present of S6OO. Nearly all the men in the Bth C. V. have re-enlisted for three years longer. Keney’s hotel in Rockville has been pur chased by E. S. Henry and Win. R. Orcutt for $13,000. Mr. Dart is laying the foundation of a new mill at the same place. They are also contemplating the idea of having a na ional bank. On the night of the 25th a fire occurred at Bridgeport which destroyed a large brick building, involving a loss of S3OOO to all con cerned. Wakeman & Kimpsoh owned the building; Spring, Perch & Co., Benj. Lob dell. H. A. Botsford, Ryburn & Brown were the other losers. At a recent family gathering in Somers, a child was present who rejoiced in the posses sion of eight living grandparents, the united ages of these venerable progenitors amount ing to 561 years. Six of them resided within a mile and a quarter of the- happy place of meeting. The trial of the famous Winslow case com menced on the 29th, in the superior court at Bridgeport. The amount involved, variously stated at from $600,000 to $1,800,000, makes it one of the most important cases ever tried in Connecticut. The wife of Gen. Gustavus W. Smith of the rebel army, who has been spending some time in New London, and rendering herself not a little obnoxious by the expression ot dis loyal sentiments, has been compelled, by or ders from headquarters, to leave for Fortress Monroe, whence she will be sent across the lines to her friends in Dixie. The Elm City Bank of New Haven pro poses to change to a National Bank. RHODE ISLAND. On the afternoon of the 30th they left for Newport, as the Governor has a son at the naval academy. John Mather of Pascoag, had his left arm torn completely off near the elbow, by being caught in a picker at the mill of IL Sayles & Son. on the 29th. Hon. E. B. Washburne of Illinois is spend ing the congressional vacation at Newport; also Leutze, the celebrated artist, is in the same city. - The War News. REGIMENTS RE ENLISTING. Since congress has refused to pay the ex orbitant. bounties expected, re-enlistments have been very much increased, and hun dreds are arriving here daily. Tlmse who were waiting for an increase of bounties are now coming forward, and in a few’ weeks, at the present rate, nearly all of the army of the Potomac will have .re-enlisted for the war. Some of the regiments have gone in bodily, while a tew have refused altogether. Lis re ported that several Wisconsin regiments are among the latter. The constant departure of troops, who have ra-enlisted for another term of three years’ service, is having great effect upon the re maining men. who are eager to rv-cnlut, and visit their homes on a furlough of thirty days. THE APPROACHING DRAFT. The war department has under considera tion several important questions relating to the draft, which will shortly he made public. The quota of the several states are being ar ranged so as to avoid difficulties in the future. Each state will be officially informed of the number of men it is expected to raise, and the time fixed for the enforcement of the draft, which will not be later than the middle of January. The time for enlisting recruits in the regular army has been extended to June 25th, during which time the extra, bounty of S3OO will be paid. GEN. GRANT’S ARMY. Gen. Grant has retired from the front and will make his headquarters for a time at Nash ville. This may be taken as an indubitable indication of inactivity, as be never absents himself from duty during a campaign. In addition to this, furloughs Jo officers and men are liberally granted, a circumstance which would hardly occur if a speedy movement was contemplated. Measures have been taken to secure a firm hold in Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, their gaps, and Chattanooga valley, several miles down. A competent cavalry force keeps northern Georgia clear. '1 he difficulties of transportation from Nash ville to Bridgeport are great. So frequent are accidents, that the mails are continually delayed, not more than four trips per week being made on an average. The Adams ex press company, which is doing its best to ac commodate the public, finds itself from this source continually involved in delays, as the trains often lie at a single point from fifteen to twenty-five hours. UNION OFFICERS IN IRONS AT LIBBY PRISON. The Richmond Examiner of the 28th states that three Union officers—viz, Capt. Chase, Ist Rhode Island, Captain Litchfield, 14th Maine, and Captain Kendall, Ist Massachu setts—have been placed in irons at the Libby prisen, to be held asliostages for the safety and good treatment of three rebel soldiers, held in the north for the safety of the same number of Yankee officers of negro regi ments, said to be in'possession of the confed erates. VARIOUS MATTERS. The 61st Ohio, now at Chattanooga, have re-enlisted unanimously. About one hundred men, th.it is four fifths of the old soldiers of the gallant 20th Massa chusetts, Have re-enlisted. Eleven locomotives from Vicksburg for the Nashville railroad, have arrived at Louis ville during the past week. They were all captured from the rebels, and have all-been repaired, re-painted and re-named. One is •called the ‘‘Gen. Grant,” another ‘•.ibraham Lincoln.” The latter is ornamented with rail-splitting views and scenes in the early lite of the president. On the 29th eighty two rebel prisoners from Camp Douglas, in Chicago, enlisted in the United States navy, and were immediately taken on board the recruiting ship North Carolina. The Richmond Examinerot the 28th says that the destroyed bridge on the Virginia and Tennessee railroad has been rebuilt, and that cars are new running through to Bristol. Five hundred and twenty Union prisoners reached Annapolis Dec. 30, being those ex changed by Gen. Butler Of this number but sixty or se enty were sick; the rest were in pretty good condition. Longstreet’s barefoot army is sadly dimin ished by desertions, and his forces do not number but 17,000. He has been compelled to abandon all his heavy artillery, and a por tion of his train. Our forces at Knoxville are sufficient to meet Longstreet anywhere. Advices from Bermuda say that two rebei blockade runners have returned to that port, being unable to break through the blockade at Wilmington, N. C. The official report of the rebel loss at the battle of Chickamauga was :• Killed 2.297 Dangerously wounded 4,780 Slightly 10.500 Missing 1,900 Total casualties ? 19,477 Items. Abel Stearns of Los Angelos, California, has lost 7000 cattle for want of food lately. He was formerly oi Massachusetts, and he now owns 48,000 cattle, besides.9ooo calves. The extent of his landed property is esti mated at 540,000 acres, all acquired by pur chase. The New York Evening Post says that sec retary Chase will soon commence to issue five per cent legal tender treasury notes. The banks will first be supplied, and afterwards the public generally.. Letters from Egypt say the emperor The odore of Abyssinia, has had a victory over his rebellidtis subjects in the district of Go jam, and his blood-thirsty majesty is report ed to have ordered the massacre of 15,000 prisoners—men, women and children. A great bar is forming at the mouth of the Hoogly river in India, which it is thought will in a few mouths make Calcutta inaccessible'to large ships and thus destroy the trade of the rich district of Bengal. Starr King’s new church in San Francisco is completed, at a cost of SIUO,OOO. There is a debt on it of S6OOO. Mr. King told the con gregation last Sunday that he would not preach in it till the debt was paid, which created a great sensation. The Italian frigate which went ashore on Jersey beach has been got safely oft into deep water. Rev. Mr. Van Allen and wife of lowa were killed by a shot from a rebel battery while going down the Mississippi, Dec. 11. They were going as teachers to the freedmen. A heavy robbery look place on the stage line between La Crosse, Wis., and St. Paul, on the 20th. Some parties organizing a na- bank were sending $35,000 in United States bonds to Washington. They were placed in a trunk and strapped on the back of the stage. A few miles north of Lake City the trunk wis cut off from the stage, and no trace of it has yet been found. Steamship Australasian, which sailed from New York tor Liverpool on the 30th, took out $770,000 in gold; steamship Bavaria, for Hamburg, $107,000. AUCTION Ei?
