WfiEKLF STATESMAN AUSTIN. TITUnSDAY AUGUST 3. 1378 laa Hallflralloa ".sella.; and tipth. Pursuant to a call which has been adver tised for some days past, the Democrat of Travis county assembled Thursday, Jthe twenty-seventh iost., at the barbecue gioundi, near this city, for the purpose of ratifying the action of the National Democ racy at St. Lot. is. Mo., in nominating ti e Hon. Bamael J. Tilden, of New York, for President, and the Hon. Tbomai A. Ileud ni k, of Indians, for Vice President, of the United State. Prompt'. at 12 o'clock Major Wm. M. Walton, in behalf of the committee of arrangements, called the meeting to order, and on his motion Col. R. II. Hutherford wos called to preside, nd on motion of the lion. A. J. Peeler, H. L. B-ntIey, E., wis selected as secre-1 tary of the meeting. - After a few explanatory rcmaikson the part of the chairman, Major Walton intro duced the Hon. Richard V. Cook, of Colo rado county, elector on the Tilden and Hendricks ticket in and for this the Fifth congressional district of Texas. Col. .Cook, ill a speech of two hours length, reviewed the history of the Democratic ami Republican piotics rettpectively, and demonstrated to the entire sittis f notion of the large and intelligent an il ience present, the eminent fitness of the election of the great reformer of New York as the standard-bearer of the Democratic party in 'the presidential content of 1876. He also siMikc in uiuet fitting and eulogistic term of the party candidate for Vice Pres ident, and tnc ticarty applause with which bis remarks were greeted (showed how' high is. the appreciation of the Travis county Dmnocriicy for the dixtinguiMlicd Iu diana slutesuun. At the condition of C'.d. Ciok's re mit ks, Gov. Richard Coke was pruiicnted to the meeting, and, in his forcible and pe culiar style, dealt ninny sledge-hammer licks to the Republican party, nud expressed bis unqualified endorsement of the action of the 8t. Louis convention. Lieutenant Governor Richard Hubbnrd was next presented to the meeting, aud in a logical and at the same time liu inoroui speech, proceeded to discuss the great issue before the coun try. His remarks were greeted warmly, and hi eulogy of Tilden and Hendricks uirt with a full and hearty response from those prwent. At the couc!uiou of O iveruor Hubbard' rrmniks, dinner w.i-t announced, and the crowd promptly repaired to the table, and did ample justice to the excellent refresh ments which had been prepared. Immediately alter dinuer the meeting wis again called to order to consider the report of the committee on resolutions which was appointed in the forenoon, which consisted of the following gentlemen, to-wit: Col. J. W. Robertson, Giles II. Uurdett, E-q , M. C. Nockols, aS'tj., J .tines D. Doxey, K q., and Hon. A. J. Peeler. Col. R ibcrtsou, as ctiuirttun of this com mittee, submitted the following, which were enthusiastically adopted by the meet ing, to-wit : Ittntrtd, That the real question to be settled at the poll, in November nc.it, is whether we are longer to tubmtt to the su premacy of a party which has deliberately trampled under font every principle that ought to be dear to the heuri of American freemen; a party which hai, with set pur pose, overt brow u the burners raided by our lathers to resist the encroachments of tyr any; a 'party which has never hesitated, when necessary to the accomplishment of its selfish ends, to brush away, as mere cobwebs, the most revered safeguards of the rights aud privileges of the people; a party which, lUsteutl of securing equal rights aud privileges, and laboring to pro mote the interests of all, has created and nourished a moneyed aristocracy; a party which has directed its chief legislation to favoring, at the expense of the hard-work ing masM'S, the wealthy few in one section, aud in oppressing and bvgganng the people of another section; a party which, in the language of our platform, has not only in- nxted upon ten btates the ranacitv of car pet-bag tyranny, but " has honey combed the olllcesof the Federal government itself with incapacity, waste and fraud, inflicted Mates and municipalities with the conta gion of m in rule, and locked fast the pros perity ot an industrious people in the par alysi of hard times;" a party which, by its useless and profligate expenditures and corrupt use of the public money, has robbed the overburdened taxpayers of uu told millions. lirwlcitl-. That against this party and for " our noble standard-bearer, batuuel J. Til den and Thomas A. Hendricks, Texas pledge a majority of one hundred thou sand, and that iu this contest for principle. every Democrat will go to the polls to vote lor these pure ana distinguished statesmen, upon whom the duty will soon devolve of rescuing our government from corruption and misrule, nd restoring it to honest lianda, J. W. Kohkktson, Chnir'u. G. II. RlltlHTT, M. C Nlt'KOI.S, J. I). IX.KV, A. J. Pkki.kk. Mr. Wooten was ucxt introduced, and, in a manner most creditable to one so young, entertained the meeting. His speech, which would have n fleeted much honor on older speaker, waa logical in its conception, chaste in its language, and was well deliv ered. Norman U. Kittrell, K-q., of Galveston, was next loudly called for, and responded in an. eloquent speech, pregnant with thought and fire. His manner was very earnest, and his langnsge sometimes se vere, but the reception with which his re marks were greeted evidenced the fact that the Democrat of TraTw county are thor ought id earnest, and are diposed to deal with the tnoinctilou questions now at issue with ungloved hands. Senator McCutlouch, having Ixea called for, made hit appesranee on the speaker's - wsrd, and, in his u-uaIIt felicitous style. entertained,' for a short timo, hi delighted audience. At this pmnt in the proceedings Mnjr Walton announced tint the rtyxW pro- . gramme of the meeting was exhausted Not contented however, with the " feast of reason and flow of sow!," up to that time enjoyed by them, the people hungered for N afcU more Democratic nourishment, and laslily called for a number of gentlemen to addrea them. In reopoase to call made for him, Robt. II. Ward, E-q , took the land, and in a sprightly aud well delivered effort of about fifteen minutes' duration, contributed much to the pleasure of the rx caaion. At the conclusion of his remarks Senator Crain waa called for and waa as - cendiog the speaker stand a we reluc tantly left the barbecue grounds. We are aot able to aprak advielly of his remarks. but judgiug from what we know of the Senator' ability as a sjx-aker, we are satis fied he did full justice t. the occasion, and added to his already well earned reputation.
