V 7 7 WEEKLY STATESMAN PUBLISHED BT CAWDWEIiIi & MORIII8. THURSDAY OCTOBER 17. 1873 Flapdoodle Jobbernowl. Ciatlngulshed "Fiat:" The dear people are becoming terri bly demoralized as they discover that the wonderful stories the flapdoodle jobbernowls have been sending oat oyvr the country are contrary to the IE factions of experience and are noth ing more nor lets than marvelous flim flams without any foundation whatever. They see that our profound financial schemes for the relief the country have originated in the prodigious and fertile brains of some of the moat selflsb, dit -honest an I unscrupulous of dema gogues, who have sent them out for the express purpose of bamboozling the average fltpdoodle "flat" that his vote may be secured and some high and mighty jobbernowl be put into an office. The dear people also discover that the present "hard times" are not the first our country has passed through. They find that during the year 1837 business of all kinds was woefully de pressed and the "cry of labor "was heard throughout the length - and breadth of the land. The shrinkage in values that year have no parallel In the biatory of this country. Nearly every bank was forced to suspend while hun dreds of the largest mercantile houses in the land failed. In New Orleans alone that year failures to the amount of $27,000,000 took place within two lays. Thousands of men were thrown out of employment and wages of all kinds were lower than ever known be fore or since. Sj great was the distress that year an extra session of Congrets was called to try and devise some plan by which it could be relieved. That cheerful body met and succeeded in accomplishing its object about as well as the great and good government I alluded to some time ago did in pre venting an eclipse of the sun. You can not legislate prosperity into a country and Congress succeeded admirably in doing nothing. Now, the dear people earnestly desire that some high and mighty flapdoodle jobbernowl rise and explain why this tbusness in 1837, They find after a careful examination that tue government at that time was not only entirely out of debt, but Actu ally had a surplus of 140,000,000 in the treasury. The patriots of the country were not paying a cent of in jterest, and the "bloated bondholder," "blood-sucking capitalist" and wicked Bhylocks had not even been dreamed of, and yet strange to say, 0 1 virtuous jobbernowls, there were "bard times" in the land. Will some lamb-like, "flat" jobbernowl make the desired explanation! It will also be well for us to explain the "dark and mysteri ons" wavs of the dear people where tbe elections nave been held of late, . They utterly ignored our ticket. I am satisfied we have made a mistake in advocating "soft money." The pec- pie of tbis country want " honest hard njuney" and I have a p'an by which vw can satisfy their absurd desires. My plan is to do away with all paper money and iseue. nothing but silver coin. The coin to be of the same size and weight as the twenty-five cent piece now in circulation. Xbis coin is to be a legal-tender for all dues, and by ten government issued in denomi nations ranging from one to one thou sand dollars, and to facilitate and make the transportation of large sums of money cheap, it may be well to le . sue several million of these coins in denominations of 10,000, $25,000 and $100,000 each. For sums less than a dollar copper will be used. I submit this plan, for which I charge $ 00 current funds, as being far superior to the paper money theory, and I take it that every aensiblo man in this ccun try 'will agree with me. This silver -iWfitSponey will wear longer than pa " per. It rrot"so easily counteifeited and is not near so liable to be destroyed by fire and water, and above all, the i nnterntica " Democrats and "un- N washed" Republicans cannot say we ue not "hones', hard money" patriob?. 5,oe made a great speech the other Mcnt. it was tbe etlort of his life, Vut he signally failed to tell when be as going to clean himself up and tave his' shoes blacked, and the vast nng of thirteen persons were diaap -' VoiDted. After tbe speech he retired to ted-and, calmly covering himself WUU a l omeroy $ Democrat, "Dreamed a very wondrous rlreit. lit drompl that upon the huttings he did Kteaiu. Tbe 'flat.' dartlcd. 'rahed' for him and Still A he proclaimed each Coin, leaf a 'Oat' dollar . SHI." IIahd Brick. Personal. Senator Thurman has accepted the , "invitation to visit the State Fair at Macon, Georgia, and will speak there ca uctober is. Emperors are nervous nowadays. A x man was arrested in Vienna for at temping to throw a harmless bundle into the imperial carnage. Col. Nicholas Smith, Horace Gree ley's son-in-law, has been nominated for Congress by the Oreenbackers of Wescbcsttr county, N. i., district. Professor - Julius D. Dreher, recent--ly elected president, and Ksv. R. C. Holland, vice president of 'Roanoke College, have accepted their positions ana entered upon tneir amies. Mr. Archibald Forbes, the brilliant war correspondent Qf the London Act, is now in London preparing for ins lecturing campaign in this country, which will begin, it is said, early in December. Ex-Governor Hendricks, of Indians, it credited with having spoken very positively in regard to Gen. Butler at least. Being asked whether he heard Butler at Indianapolis the other night, he rcplioi : "No, I don't want to Eeai Mm. I have the utmost disgust for tr.e man. Mary Anderson feeds genius with beefsteak. She says: "When I come borne at night I am awfully hungry.. I rat a beefsteak supper when I come from the theater a nice underdone feak and not a very small one at that. I'.ut after my midnight rapper I go to t eil and sleep with the most perfect nuietude." Kdltoriatf Notes. The British Consul in Pekin puts the deaths from famine In China at 7. ( 0,000. The. province of Shanghai .tiue lost 3, 000,000. A Dublin critic reviews a book and then says in a postscript: ''Passages u.at I consider to be unsuitable for the , cn:l of little boys and girls are to ucd in ps-s 61, 63, 64, 138, 147, : 131, UG.-221, 223, 242, 213, 314, rj" Litt'e boys and girls will i uus be saved much trouble. Au elaborate portrait of Queen Vic- ria, ss Km press of India, is to be ex- KsiTcly circulated among the Ilin- ot, coder goTcrnment auspices. Whereat the Frtie Prttst, a German paper publiiiei at Sin At -to ii, gets very wrath and comes back at the church people afur tbe following styl: "What advantage have our dull church-oera, who Htiat for hours ioside the dull walls of a church, singing songs derogatory to the dignaty of tbe human race to the tines of an organ (the only instrument that is incapable of modulation) and listening to the rigmarole of a paid man of God, who says thst tbis earth is a vale cf tears, and that man is ac cused from bis birth what have these people, we repeat, over those who rec ognize in tbe flivor of a flower, tbe buzzing of the be, and in the song of tbe birds, tie inexhaustible source, to which we all owe our existence, and the most fitting place for whose wor ship is in tbe temples made by bature herself." And - now what shall be done with this awful Freie Pre man except to chuck him into Semises' Hole away from the outward civlliz d world I In a recent letter to a member of Congress, Capt. Eads makes some im portant statements concerning tbe present condition of bis improvements at the jetties: The jetty channel is now almost as good as the en trance to New York harbor. Larger ships and steamers visit tbe port of New Orleans than ever before. Ocean freights have been so greatly lowered in consequence that the saving on cotton sloje from the port of New Orleans the past season was over .$1,600,000. As tbe channel depens, and commerce adapts itself to these new conditions, the benefits to the Western producers will be still more ex tensively en j iyed. The permanent im provement of the mouth of the Missis sippi operates as a regulator of trans portation cbargeaand tbns adds to the value of every bushel cf grain grown for export to Europe or for consump tion in tbe Atlantic State, and it also cheapens to the farmer all of his mer chandise and other supplies brought from tbe East." Little Henry Kybitz, seven years old ran home from school in Cincinnati last Monday and asked for a slice of bread and butter. His mother gave him a piece of bread on which there was no butter, and be refused to take it. She told him be could not have any butter on bis bread and he left the house in s fit of sulks. On bis way out be met his sister and bade her good bye, telling ker she would never see him any more. He wbUtled for his dog, went down to the bank of the nver and took off his clothes, then telling the dog to watch his jacket, he jumped in and was drowned. ' Earl Beaconsfield is reputed a rich msn by marriage and otherwise, a though, before obtaining a pension of f 1U.UU0 a year, be bad to make a dec laration of poverty. In the last Domes day Book of England he is thus ec tered as a landed proprietor in the county of Buckingham: "Disraeli, B., Uugbenden, 1004 acres, 3r. lip." The death of Millionaire Reese, ac cording to the San Francisco Argonaut, came about in tbe meanest kind of a manner. He was trying to steal out of tbe Paris Cemetery without paying the fee, and when caught by the irate sexton the blood rushed to bis head. causing death. He lived to save $10, 000,000, and died to save a silver gros- cnen. Gambctta is very active nowadays.
