The London Pull 21 ill Gazette says : "Some medical men irbo entertain ,try decided views m lo the extent to which alcoholic drinks contribute to increase the death rate of the country l ave been startled by the (act that in the Inst report of the Kegistrar -General, issued by Dr. Farr, 'the highest authority on vital statistic, ' the deaths from alcohol in EngUnd and Wales id are set down as 1120 only, in cluding 403 from delirium tremens, njhereas Dr. Norman Kerr, in a paper recently read by him before the Social Science Conreis, put the whole mor tality, direct and indirect, traceable to the abuse of alcohol, at no less than 12'),00!), an estimate, enormous as it in, in which Dr. Ilirdwkke, who had also investigated the subject, con curred. This discrepancy is attempted to be explained in a paper which was reid by Dr. Tiiomas Morton before the . llirveun Sjciety on the twenty-first of last month, which, with the dis cussion that followed it, will be found fully reported in the Medial Press and Circular of December 4. The ex planation suggested by Dr. Mor ton seems a very natural one. Dr. Fair could only deal with the returns which were before him; while medical men who are brought face to face with the individual facts on which those returns arc -based know how small a proportion of the deaths really due to drinking are certified under such heading as intemperance. Dr. Morton has gone "behind the returns," and with the assistance of many med ical friends, who bare ransacked the counterfoils of their certificates of dqaiha, and reported to him how mtny of them could be fairly set down as caused by drink, wholly or partial ly, aud applying these averages to tbu number of deaths from all c vjjl-s be tveen the ages of twenty-live and sev en tj-fivo, brmgs out the result that of tlio I'JS.O.a deaths from all causes no fewer than 14,191 were wholly due to alcohol, plus 23,700 partially due . to it La all, 37,900 alcoholic deaths be tween the agea of twenty-five and sev en! y-fivc. Dr. Morton, in conclusion, suggested that tho society, following some former excellent precedents when ' me committees were formed on the budjcci oi contagous diseases and in fant mortality, with very satisfactory results, should appoint a commit tee to follow out the lines of inquiry by which the whole truth may be elic ited and placed beyond doubt. This was sgTeea to unanimously. o we may now hope that an approximation at least to trie trutu cn the subject will ie ariivea at. 'ill a me smd Farm, 5f ESQ L IT ;LAXD AXD WHEAT. Mj. C. C. Watteraon, of Live Oak, Bastrop ennntv whn .ntriA timn clnii 1 attention through the Statesman to the fact that the mesquil lands of Texas offer the best of soil for the pro - duction of wheat, sustains his asser tion, -as follows: "All things have f amilies,or spccies,as the horse, the oow and the hog. So has grain oats, rye, corn, cotton and wheat. The horse has been improved to the racer, the saddle and draught horse; the ccw to the val uable Durham and Devon, etc.; the aboriginal hog to the beautiful porker; and we read that the peach, the most delicious of all f raits, was originally a poisonous fruit. We do not know when or hw wheat was produced, bat we do know that it is a grain plant, with straw and blades, and the grain composed of starch, gluten and the germ. The mcsqait grass has the same straw, blade?, stems, beards, seed, starcq, gluten, and germ; in a word, . all that the wheat ha" Meequit grass is composed of the same chemicals that wheat is. The same soils that will make one will produce the other, and for these reasons I ad vocate wheat culture in Southwestern Texas. Asido from this wheat im- . i j. . . . . . . i itovcb iani : me straw is eooa cauia Li?, the bran is good cow, hog or horse .(ted, and flour is very passable food lor-xiian." Coynercially flour has been imported to a country whence it should be exported. Cotton is low tho merchants and brokers have "cor nered" on it till cotton has "comeied" them. The North and West bad a market for their Hour and pork, till they reversed the production by the war, and now the South should be self-sustaining, which she soon will b, if we will diversify our crops and plant moro wheat." Although Eiiaon has obtained a pat ent on his electric light, he still keeps ..mum about the details of the discov ery and zealously guards the Menlo Park observatory from all outside in trusion. There are still other, im provements, lately made, which are yet unpatented, but essential to the complete success of the light for com mon use. lie is already selling. bis patent rights, however, at home and, abroad the privilege of electrically , lighting the South American continent going to a well-known company. Pro fessor Morton, who a while since com forted the gas -monopolists, in con vention at New York, with skeptical words about tho prospect of KJison's achieving cheap electric light for the million, presents a new suggestion concerning the possible light of the future. This is not to be attained by electricity, but through phosphor escence. It is already successfully ap plied to clocks. The dial is filmed Uh a cheap compound of lime anc sii'pbur, which haa the curious prop erty of absorbing light by day and mittiug it at flight, and the color of the illumination may be varied at pleasure. When thisjmethod of light ing is perfected it will simply be nec essary to wbitowasu the ceilings of a heuso with this sulphide of calcium fur interior illuminations, and to paint the outside with it to make the streets glow with a soft and pleasing radiance by night. And then it will be so cheap that even electricity will stand n chance beside it. If gas is ever sup planted " for lighting purposes it is likely to Cud ready at hand other prof itable uses. Aside from the vast Celd cf domestic beating, it can be econom ically utilized in driving small engines.
