Wour Arrixj. Ilaviag been troubled

I thought 1 would try an experiment on one
two this ssnaon, to see if I cuuld not atop
these marauder* in their wild career. 1

filled each half full of sweetened water; 1

around the branches, to prevent thorn from

which affidavit Mr. Buchanan bmra the full*
cat testimony to the high chaiacter of Col.
Fremont, both oa a man and nn officer ; and
to the Talue of hia aerrioee in . California,
atating that in hia opinion Col. Fremont is
better entitled to be called the conqueror of
California than any other man. With re
gard to the drawing of tbo billa on Halth
am A. Co., lately referred to in hia papen,
Mr. Buchanan auja : "I should Iwto ac
cepted and paid theee billa from my general
knowledge of thing* in California, had Con
grwsa appropriated any money."

the Massachusetts Agricultural Show, and
prunouuevd superior to two thirds of the figs

Ida Mar. This little girl, who, with
her family, was freed frv>m bUtmj in Vir
ginia, through the instrumentality of Sena
tor Sumner, recently spent three or four
days in this city, ller real nam) U Mary
llotts. ller father, Scth llotts, escaped
from servitude, and eanij to Boston, some
six yean since, and linally -purchased his
freedom. His wife and children have also
been purchased from bondage, us also his
wife's mother and sitter, while three broth
er's are still enslaved. Effort* are now
making, we beliere, to sccur* the freedom
of these. Mary, from her resemblance to
tho heroine of a recent, popular work, gen
erally goe» by the name of "Ida May."—
She is about 8 years old. S le bears no
traces oi African blood in feature or com
plexion. She is bright, intelligent and
liandsouic—such a girl, in fact, as any New
England mother would tie proud to call her
daughter. One can hardly realise, while
looking ujion little Ida, that she was ever
a slave. Hut she was, and liable to all those
dread rontingencies.which belong to the con
dition of servitude, utiJ from the thought of
which every virtuous heart shrinks with

may every true lover of humanity and his
country, do all in his power to prevent the
extension of an institution which treuts as
