VOLUME XIII.
The first number of the Union, out ol
which originated the Union k Journal u
now published, wu issued January 31,1845.
It wu established on the basis of affording
to the community in which it was published,
a medium through which correct informa
tion of the business, social, and political
want* of the peoplo might be disseminated.
It had its origin in no fleeting desire to aid
in mending the fortunes of a defeated and
prostrate party, or to suhsenre the interests,
or to secure the political advancement oj
any clique of men. Its promnt conductor
hns been connected with it from its com
mencement, and whatever success it hai
achieved, and whatever hold it may hare
upon tho sympathies of the community ia
owing, in somo degree, to hi* exertions and
the kindness of friends. Bound to no par- J
ty in its inception, and proposing only to'
support principles believed to bo oorrect, the
paper has boon conducted with the view to
promoto the greatest good of all, and to ad
ranee those groat moral and social ideas up
on which the prosperity of a community
rest. It has never followed tho fortunes of
a party, longer than tho party to which it
rendered i taaid, followed principle.
Its conductor has studiously aimed to live
up faithfully to tho following cx]K»ution of
the manner in which the paper would be
conducted, and the principles it would an*
force, set forth In introductory artlclc, in
serted in tho fin«t number ;

healthful tone of moral sentiment in tho com

managing the paper in accordance with

measures of an economical character which

The compaction to which tho publishers of
local papers are subjected, both from within
and without the State, is sharp, and while
no complaint is made, inconsequence of this
cum|H'tition, still the fact of its existence
and its results, requires greater efTcrts to
sustain tho papr, and justifies its proprie
tor in calling upon those who sympathise
in tho principles the paper supports, to do
what they can to extend its circulation.
