A LEGEND OF THE RIUINE, There is a lonely mull close beside the lit= tle hamiet of Udorf, near the Rhine Shore, between the Villuges of Hershel Ursel, on the Jeft bank below Boon. Tiis is said o have been the scene of the following story, It was ona Sunday morning, ages long ago, that the muller of this mill and his whole fam ily went forth to hear the holy mass at the nearest church in th= villuge of Hershel, e The mill, which was also Lis residence, was left in charge of « servant girl, named Hanne ehen or Jenny, a stout-hearted lass, who lLived with him 1w that evpacity. Ao mfant child, of an age unfit for church, was left in her charge likewise. The givl was busily employed in preparing dinner for the return of her master and his famnly, when who should eoter, ol of a sud den, but an old sweetnvart of hers, named Heivrich Bonelor. He wasan idle, graceless fellow, whom the miller hadforbidden his house, butwhom Jenovy, withiall the amiable perversi ty ol her sex, only liked, perhaps all the bet ter because others gave him no countenance. She wes glad 1o «ee i and she told him 80, too, and althouv b o the midst of her work, she not vuly got bhm something to eat at ouce, but also found time to sit down wich Y : us be ute, however, he let £l his kuife. *Pick that up, my lass," he said o a Joking way to the good natured girl. *Nav., Hewrieh,' she rephed, ‘vour back ehould be more suple than mine, o vou have less work to make it s, 1 Libor ol day long. el you do notinng. This was spoken bl snortively, and balf 1o 'Oud carnest ; for she was tao hopest and in dustiious hersell (o cocourage and approve of idicness and a suspicious course of hife in any one clse, however dear to ey, Sl stuoped down accordingly to pick up the knife. The ruffian velaxed his gripe, and finally let go s bold. Her reasons were all cogeut with his capidity. ‘Come," she said, ‘quick, no delay, the money 1% in masier's bed rovin,’ She tripped up stairs gaily as a lark ; he followed closely at her heels.
