PUBLIC NOTICE!
8. P. Townsend abandoned the Field
THE WAR ENDED!
This young maa who sought to make the people believe his
Barsaparilla was orignal has finally abandoned the field, by
solling his businecss to some STRANGERS, Being eonvineed
af the inutility of warring against the better judgment and
eonvictions of the people, he has at last disposed of his busi
«sss and retired from the contest, thus virtually admisting al}
.t was true in our publications. After accusing the Ol
wr. of selling the use of Lis name for $7 & week, and getting
up false “ afidafiis’ respecting the 01d Dr's. original Recipe,
after trying to seduce one of our workman to disclose to him
s knowledge of the Old Dr's. Recipe by offering as high =e
$1000; after making the most tempting offers to the oOld Dr,
himself, of wousks, LANDS, money and PARTNERSHIP,
through his ecounsel Horace Dresser and Van Pelt, to leave
Thompeon, Skillman, & Co. and go over to 8. P. Townsend ‘
with his Recipe and teach him to make Sarsaparilla so as nod
to SOUR, FERMENT and BURST the BOTTLES, After li
belling the members of our firm, ealling us *‘ A set of unprine
eipled men,"” and other hard names, he has finally thrown up
the whole bugsiness, as too heavy a load to earry, and TUMBLED
the wurpex upon the shoulders of some STRANGERS,
whom he induced to take his place under the pretence that
they could make money by the operation,
These strangers, we understund, intend placing some ochem-~
fat's name on the hottles to redeem it from its past eharacter
for- SOURING and FERMENTING, which is really the
sisleet aoknowledzment of the truth of all we have hereto
”-um of it. 1t is a VIRTUAL CONFESSION that it
* whs neither made by a chemist heretofore, nor had the advan
tages of chemical science in its manufacture. Will not the
people Now see the imposition and humbug in ealling 8. P's
article & good medicine?
But we confess all the raseality PORMERLY displayed
18 nothing to that of these STRANGERS in placing upon the
pottles the name of some chemist, for EFFECT, while at the
same time the Sarsaparilla is made after the FORMULA of
8. P. Townsend's Recipe,
If the Recipe is cuancep, then it becomes ANO
fHER ARTICLE, and should be ealled the STRAN
GER'S SARSAPARILLA or by some other distinetive ap
pellation, Come ont GENTLEMEN STRANGERS and
show your hiands, and let the public know whether you in
tend to make 8. P. Townsend's SOURING, FERMENTING
COMPOUND with the name of & chemist on the label for
certain purposes, or whether you are making another and to
tally different article, but intend puttingitup in 8. P's. bot
tles, wi his labels, signature, &e. and thus selling it under
alse colors ? The mere fact of sticking a chemist’'s name oR
the bottle, will never change its character.

GENUINE
SARSAPARILLA,
Has now been before the public a long time, and there mever
was a more emphatie and universal exprossion of APPROBA
TION towards any medicine sold in Ameriea,
Every Class of Persons, |
of MEN, WOMEN and CHIDREN, speak in the most exalted
terms of its medicinal power and virtue., LAWYERS and
JUDGES, CLERGYMEN of all denominations, MEMBERS
of Congress, and of our Legislatures, gentlemen engaged in
Literary pursuits, and STUDENTS at Colleges and other
gchools, the MECHANIC, the ARTISAN ; LADIES in the
highest walks of life, and those in humble eircumstances, the
rich and the poor, the high and the low, apply to this medle
cine as to
A Fountain of Sweet Waters,
for they have seen its effects and know that it is good. And
a 8 though this were not enough to convinee every doubtfa,
mind and cause the ENTIRE POPULATION inone
Solid, Unbroken, Phalanx,
to make trial of this noble medicine, the DRUGGISTS, with
characteristio nobleness, have added their testimony to i%
excellence and uosurpassed eficacy. With them came
A Host of Physicians,
Pledging their experience and skill in ite merits. Whoeves
witnessed such an array of men of all professions, holding 14
up to the people, as a medicine of rare and wouderful powem,
and one on which all classes could rely with undoubted and
unmistakeable confidence ! We will here give the Card off
Nearly One Hundred
DRUGGISTS and PHYSICTANS, and thus every man ¢
udge for himself, whether we speak right or wrong.
“«CARD TO THE PUBLIC.”
We the undersigned Physicians and Druggists of New
York, Brooklyn snd Williamsburgh, having seen an advertises
ment addressed to us, and others who sell Sarsaparilla, by 8,
P. Townsend, which ie calculated to bring us and our busi
pess into reproach, feel called upon to state our personal
views of the real merits of the two Townsends' Sarsaparills.
Having been called “ pwindlers,” and ** willing to commis
sny fraud for money,” by the Young S, r. ‘l‘owuond.h—‘
eause we chose to sell Old Dr. Jacobs Sarsaparilla, instead of
his article, we feel that we ought to give the ressons why we
prefer to use and gell Old Dr. Jacob Townsend's Sarsapariila
to Mr. 8. P. Townsend's, and leave the public to judge
whether we are * deceivers and swindlers, and not to be
trusted” by so doing.
1. Our experience and observation have satisfied us that the
Old Dr's. Sarsaparilla possesses more medical power and vie
tue than 8. P. Townsend's, and the testimony of the publie
would seem to be the same, and we always make it a matter
of conscience and duty, when two articles bearing the same
name, and purporting to cure the same diseases are in mar-
Xet, to sell that which we consider the best, The fact thad
8, P. Townsend’s Sarsaparilla has greatly soured, fermeut
od and exploded the tottles, thereby giving great disatisfae
tion to our customers, has influenced us in our prefercnce of
the Old Dr's. preparation. We do not feel ourselves called
upon to decide the true merits of either articles ae standard
preparations, but when asked by our customers for our opine
fons which we Lelieve under all circumstances to be the best,
we should not hesitate in giving our preference to Old De,
Jacob Townsend's. With thesc views, we leave the public te
decide if we arc not justitied in giving the Old Dr's. prepara~
tion that preference which it seems to deserve as & medioinal
compound, as well as the choice of the people so universally
manifested in ite favor,
