THE ANARCHISTS.
Chicago Adherent of tile Kxecuteil An

Memory.
Chicago, Not. 1. Sunday was the
anniversary of anarchy in Chicago.
Thirty-Cvo hundred people stood in a
cold, drizzling rain at Waldheim ceme
tery and paid tribute with speech and
fcoug to the memory of "tha martyred"
nnd strewed with wreaths and flowers
the graves of the men who were con
demned by the law for their part in the
Haymarket riot August Spies, (ieorge
Engel, Albert Parsons, Adolph Fischer
and Louis Lingg.
Quiet earnestness and enthusiasm and
general good order characterized the
celebration of the men and women who
dedicated to the world a monument that
is to mark the graves of those who five
years ago paid the; penalty of crime
with their lives. A parade In the city
and the ceremonies nt the cemetery
were the features of the day.
The labor organizations that were to
participate gathered at the Haymarket
square at H:U0 in the morning, but it
was noon before the profession moved.
Fifteen hundred men ami women and
children were in line and marched to
the grand Central depot, accompanied
by bands playing the Marseillaise and
the dead march. They were watched
with interest by many who had sta
tioned themselves on the sidewalks oa
the route. At the station two special
trains awaited to convey the crowd to
trie cemetery w here tne graves were i

The monument which marks the bury

ropes of smilax and five crimson roses.
".Murdered, but not dead," was the in
scription, set in carnations. On the
pedestal were Spies' dying words as the
noose was tightened about his neck:
"Our silence will more powerful than
words can be." AH of the floral em

prevailed everywhere in badges and

DICK SAVED JTHE COMPANY.
A Dog t'roved or lue-ltm-l)la Vain lu a
iir.-iat Ltiivt-gclic.
All this story was bcUijf told of Hick,
the company dog, way back lu that
summer of Y,ll, out in Iudiau territory.
"Ho canto from the east with us,
jjiueJ iu Jersey City. How did hu come,
to join? Well, to bo honest, wo w ere
waiting on the platform for tho train to
Iwv'u iu, aud when the handsome dog
cauio up and mini:' friends, soldlor-lllte,
wo just, smuggled him on board. Our
company was ordered to inarch to the
next fort and bring1 down a supply
tr;iu. St-ain? Not much! Six-inulo
wagons. So one morning off we started,
Dick with us a usual.
"To make a long story short, the next
afternoon found us surrounded by 400
or 500 Indians, our wagon animals
killed, and wo unable to move, in
trenched as best we might, with our
wounded as comfortable as we could
make them in the center of our circle.
Safo? Of course we were that Is, some
of us got hurt, of course, but they
couldn't break our circle. And no mora
could we move, Thoro we were out on
a wide prairie, only a few drops of
water in our canteens, aud cut from
aay way of gutting moro. That made
it a question of moving and getting
killed, staying still and dying of thirst,
or getting aid from the fort. Night
camb auj volunteers for water tried to
steal through the ludlan lines, (let
through? No, sir. Those plains Indiaus
knew Just the kind of a box they had
as lu, and no man, white or rod. could
havo got past them. Every man that
made the trial came running back for
bis life.
Next day it was worse hotter than
ever ana what little water there was
was kept for tho wounded. Aud tho
meanest part of it was to look at the
reds, some on horseback, some on tho
ground stretched out enjoying them
selves out of range, and all of them free
to rido over to the stream whose cotton-wood-oovered
banks wero iu plain sight
a few miles away.
"Night came again and I heard some
body whistle; then Dick was called
softly. After a bit every man got
orders not to let Dick inside the lines.
A message to the fort for aid had been
rolled up in a piece of rubber blanket
and tied around his nock. Our only
hops was that ho would start off for
the fort and carry it, and that someone
would untio the roll and read the mcs
uiagc. "Kvnry now and then Dick would try
to come, up to where I lay iu tho circle.
Hut it was only to bo met with clods
of earth that drove hiin off to try to
find some friend who would Welcome
him as of old.
'Hut every man's hand was against
Dick that night and after a long time
word was passed around that Dick was
gone. Nobody could see him at all
'vents, liut we had to wait for day
light to make sure the poor old boy was
not lying down a little way from us,
waiting for the dawn and the recogni
tion we had never failed iu giving him
be fore.
"Daylight came at last. Thon every
eye was strained to find Dick, liut he
was not there. And after tho field
glasses had searched lu vain for hiin
there rose a cheer on the morninr air
that brought the Indians to their feet,
anxiously scanning the horizon all
around for the cause.
"Well, that little dog made his way
to the fort over the dark prairies, and
swimming tho stream, until just after
layhreak, about the timo we were
uttering him back there in tho camp,
he trotted up to the stable guard at one
at tho cavalry oonipany's stable tired
out.
"Well, it wasn't long after that that
we saw our roUc-f cjuuiug. And they
brougtit Diuk with theuL How we did
pel him! liut I often wondered what
tho little fallow thought that uiirht
aftor wa hud driven him oil, as he
trottc-d aloaif through the dark to the
fort" Pittsburgh Dispatch.
Flattened Indian hkulla.
There are in the national museum at
Washington several skulls of the Flat
head Indians of the northwest, which
aro tha most extraordinary objects in
that lino ever seen. These Indians pro
duce the peculiar deformity which gives
them a name by t3'mg flat boards on the
heads of their children, and to such an
extent is the pressure c irriod that tho
skull just above the eyebrows is the
most promtueut and highest part of the
head, lhe effect must have been fright
fully savage, for the skulls more nearly
resemble those of apes than those of
human beings, tho whole of th brain
being coin pressed Into tho back portion
while there is no forehead worth
mentioning, and the skull Is so broad its
to bo shockingly out of proportion.
Nevertheless, it does not nppear, from
what travelers say of these people, that
their minds are in any way affected bv

lltlfllncsA Training for Children.
It would be a go d plan if every child
old enough to read aud write were
taught to keep a bank account, giving
his father his little hoard to keep, and
opening a regular account with him.
lhe child should have his small bank
book in which his father might enter
all moneys that he receives from him.and
which should be balanced from tiina to
time like an ordinary bank-book. When
he wants money he should draw a reg
ular che.-k oi his father, and when his-
book U balanced he should receive his
vouchers in duo form. HesiJes this he
should keep an account-hook of private
expenditures. In this way he would acv
quire practical knowledge of how to
take care of money, and of the value of
it, and would learn business-like habits
that would stand him in good stead in
after life. N. Y. Tribune.

AN OBLIGING MAN.
A young' 111.111 advertises in a New
York Daily, as follows: " A young
man of good social position will marry
any lady of means who will provide
funds for him to procure a divorce
from his present wife, whom he can
not get along with." Here is a golden
opportunity for some one. That
young man's spells are probably dys
pepsia, or she may be afflicted with
indigestion. If he will get a box of
the Laxative Gum Drops, lie will
probably get over his dyspepsia. These
gum drops contain no taste of medi
cine. He may think at first they will
do him no good, but he will find tli.it
they have embodied in them the finest
cathartic in the world, mild, penl!.
pleasant and perfectly safe. They
come m two sizes. Small boxes 10
cents, large size 25 cents. Get them
of any dealer.
