In a recent lecture npon the life of Hon. Amox
lawreacc, it is stated that during his lifetime he

Fonr hundred and sixty thousand immigrants
arrived in the United Stales for the year ending
in Juno list. This shows on increase of 00,000
over aqy, previous year. Of these 77,000 wero
from Ireland, 75,000 from England, and 150,000
from Germany.
Fruit. The final decision of the U. S. Treas-
ury Department is that green fruit is free of duty

The Dominion immigration report for 1872
shows that the number of immigrants who enter
ed the Dominion in 1872 was 89,189, of which

States. The Dominion and Provincial Govern
ments assisted many of the immigrants by pay
ing a portion or their passage money, $2G1,9G3
being expended in this way.

the following recipes which may bo of value : A
tea made of chestnut leaves and drank in place of
water, will cure the most obstinate case of dropsy
in a few days. A tea made of ripe or dried
whortleberries and drank in place or water, is -a
sure and speedy cure for scrofulous difficulty,
however bad. A tea made of peach leaves is a
sura euro for kidney difficulty. A plaster made of
fresh slacked lime and tor is n sure cure for a can
cer, which with its roots will soon come out.
Pay as Yod Go. Even rich buyers are prone
to take advantage of the "tightness of the times"
and seek for unusual advantages, bat those who
can pay as they go ought to do so more than ever.
Some who bavo money and owe it are paying,
and all ought to imitato their example. In this
way well disposed people are enabled to extend
beneEts by paying their debts in turn, and some
do this nith alacrity. Meantime, those who want
goods will find the retail stores marking them
down, as they.say, to "panic prices." The dry
goods dealer especially, in the different streets
given to that trado in Baltimore, are offering
goods very low for cash. Silver cliango was pas
sing about qaito freely also in the stores. Ex.
The Christian JaleUigeacer solemnly admon
ishes its readers against " charades and private
theatricals in church and parlors, and similar sec
ular amusements," and fears that " the Holy
Spirit may bo grieved away by the means em
ployed to prosper a church." The Liberal Chris
tian thinks differently, and commenting npon this
subject, observes : ' Vo have never been able to
see anything particularly sinful in ' charades and
private theatricals,' even though given in 'church
parlors.' If carried to excess, like any other in
nocent amusement, they are doubtless injurious.
But a few dramatic representations, daring a
Water, add much to the general pleasure, and
even the intellectual profit, of the members of a
society."

What is the liability of an editor to his personal
friends f Strictly speaking, be should have none ;
should attack his own father if be disapproves
bis speeches; or lash his wife's lost book if he
thinks it rubbish. This is no doubt abstractly
true, as it is also abstractly true to steal an epi
gram from an Australian who once wrote a
pamphlet on the subject that an editor should
live in a collar ; bat in practice men will not com
ply with either .condition, and such demands
would .drive all the men with hearts and tempers
out of the profession. It is, nevertheless, exces
sively difficult to find a rule that shall bo morally
sufficient, for silence, though.it will meet the case
of a book, unless of the first importance, will not
meet that of gravo political action. We suspect
that in this the practice of Parliament is the
best guide, and that the journalist is bound to do
his duty and take the consequences. He might
be a Uttlo more gentle in his language, a little
more apologetic in his tone, bat the attack must
be deprived of its efficiency for any personal con
sideration whatsoever. London Spectator.
Says the Independent: "We are Tery happy
to see quite a number of influential religions jour
nals accepting tho cogency of our arguments in
favor of the taxation of ecclesiastical property ;
but when, as in one or two cases, they defend the
principal of equal taxation not mainly on the
ground of its justice, but because it is supposed
by them to bear heavily on the Bo man Catholics,
we can hardly suppress our disgust. If it will in
jure the Catholics, we are sorry. They are a very
osefnlbodyof Christians, who reach and greatly
benefit a population inaccessible to Protestants,
and who-have been very .sensibly if unconscious
ly modified by their relation to Protestant bodies.
The burden of impartial taxation would fall indis-!
crimicately oa all denominations, among which
tbeMethodists have $9,000,000. more, and the
Presbyterians but $13,000,000 less than the $61,
000,000 of Catholic property. Had we thought
or this movement of ours as an anti-Catholic
crnsade, wo should have been very slow to enter
npon it To our mind It is a necessary corollary
to tho American doctrino of utter separation of
Church and State."
