Hungarian, Spanish, German, Belgian, and
South American, including Mr. Alexander
Balfour, a gentleman connected with the Press,
officially appointed by His Excellency Senor
Aiaresis, President of Panama State, to ac
company the Commission to the scene of their
exploratory labours, between the Gulfs of San
Miguel and Atrato, on the Pacific and Atlantic
shores of the Isthmus respectively, where
they are at present actively engaged. The
report of the Exploration Commission in
question will hereafter be published in Paris,
and cannot fail to prove highly interesting. It
may be stated that the famous Hungarian Pa
triot, General Titrr, is the main promoter of
ths Exploration Scheme, in which Mr. Lesneps
is also engaged, being President of the socie
ty founded at Paris, with the object of tunn
ing and sending out this expedition to the
Isthmus.
While the labors of this Exploration Com
mission merit consideration, a glance at the
present route over the Isthmus traversed by the
iron horse, may prove interesting, especially
as many people think that the best plan would
be to cut the proposed canal along side of the
actually existing railroad between Colon (As
pinwall) and Panama. The Atlantic termi
nus of this railroad is situated, as is generally
ktiown, on Manzanilla Island, at Colon, in
North Latitude 9 21' 23", and West Longi
tude "8 : 53' 52", seven miles to the east of
the mouth of Chagres River. From the Colon
terminus, the road crosses the shallow waters
of Victor Bay, skirts the western shore of
Manzanilla Island 4 of a mile, passes on a
bridge over the channel between the island
and mainland, and proceeds till it touches at
Chagres River, the aldea of Jatuii, " miles,
from the Colon terminus. Then following the
direction of the River Chagres, the railroad
passes by the villages of Ahorca Ligarto,
Beyio Soldado, Frejol, Barbacoas, beyond
which it crosses over the Chagres River on a
bridge 650 feet long, after which it isses by
the villages and stations of San Pablo, Buila
Monn, Gorgona and Malachin. Near the last
mentioned place is the confluence of the Obis
po River with the Chagres River, 31 miles
from the Atlantic. Here the railroad enters
into the Obispo Valley, twice crosses river
bends, and follows to the river head in the
summit ranges, 37 miles from the Atlantic,
and 10 and one-fifth niles, from the Pacific.
The cut on the summit range is .' mile long,
and 24 feet deep. This position forms the di
viding line of the two watersheds of the At
lantic and Pacific.
From this place, the railroad strikes the
head waters of the Rio Grande, which flow
into the Pacific below the city of Panama,
then it follows the left bank of the Rio Grande,
crossing on bridges over three of its tributa
riesthe Pedro Miguel, Caimitillo, and Car
denas ; and subsequently stretches across the
Savannas of Corasol, anil the Swamps of Coren
da, until finally, through a spur of Ancon
Hill, it reaches the Pacific at Playa I'ricla,
the northern suburb of Panama. The whole
length of the railroad is 47 miles 3020 feet ;
the maximum grade is tiO feet per mile ; the
summit grade is 258 and sixty-four one hun
dredth feet above the assumed grade at the At
lantic, and 212 and one-tenth feet above the as
sumed grade at the Pacific terminus. The high
est point of the summit ridge is 287 feet above
the level of the sea. The highest spring tide
of the Pacific is 60 feet above the highest
spring tide of the Atlantic.
A canal uniting the Chagres' tributary
Obitpo and Rio Grande, and the sinking,
widening and embanking of those rivers,
would perhaps be the best plan of canaliza
tion. Another scheme of canalization of the Pa
nama Isthmus is advocated by a British Ad
miral, who ascended the River Chesso, from
its mouth in the Pacific to the farm of Jesus
Maria, 10 m'les inland in a steam piunace
some time ago. The tide rose still soms
miles beyond that place, but the Admiral
could not proceed farther for other reasons
than the vaiit of depth in the river. Prom
Jesus Maria, the distance, the Admiral states,
was only nineteen miles to the Gulf of San
Bias, on the Atlantic coast of the Isthmus.
But the dividing range was much higher than
at the summit ridge of the railroad, being
at least over one thousand feet high ; yet the
Admiral bad some reason to think that a
much lower pass could be found, by ex
ploring tho Sierras. He also thought that
some one of the rivers flowing down to the
Gulf of San Bias might be ascended five or six
miles inland, so that only 15 or 16 miles of
canal wotld be necessary; and a tunnel
through the dividing range be the best plan.
The Admiral's scheme has the advantage of
being traced across I he very narrowest spot
oft c whole Isthmus, and, in the long run, it
may be adopted in preference to all the others.
In these remarks no reference is made to
the Nicaragua Canal Scheme, the object of
the writer being merely to notico the present
''lie Sea Merpeaat Again.
The London Spectator gives full credit to the last
reported observation of the sea serpent, lis appear
ance coincides with what Is now agreed upon, tbat
it most be of a Saurian character, like tbe monsters
of geologic periods. The Spectitof says:
" In tbe Strsita of Malacca tb.' ses-monster, so
repeatedly seen and so rtpestcdly declared to be
mythical, appears at last to have beeu carefully ob
served by competent witnesses. Tbe creature wss
seen by tbe passengers and crew of tbe ship 'Nestor,'
on her voyage to Shanghai ; and on ber arrival at
Shanghai the roaster ol tbe ship, Mr. John Keller
Webster, and the surgeon Mr. James Anderson,
tnsde s ststutory declaration of what they bad seen
be'ore a magistrate, as a mode, we suppose, of for
mally attesting that tbey spoke in good taith. The
creature (which reaembled a huge salamander, only
that, instead of being about six or eight inches loug,
these ditneiisious must be multiplied by st least T
or 100, the body ben tig Irom 45 feet to 50 feet in
length, the bead 12 feet, sad the tall, it Is said, no
leas than 150 feet) waa drat aeeo at half-past leu
o'clock on the 11th of September, filteeu inilee north
weet of tbe North Sand Lighthouse, in the Strait
of Miilacca. Tbe weather was tine, the sea smooth,
and the air perfectly clear. Tbe Chineae oo deck
were terribly ubnned and set up a bowl. The whole
watch and Ibree saloon passengers saw the creature
clearly and observed its movements. It traveled
lor a long time about as fast us tbe steamer, appear
ing to puddle Itself by the belu of 'an undulatory
motion of its tall in a vertical plane.' Tbe body and
tail were uiaiked as those of the salamander are
marked with alternate bands, bluck and pale ye!
low iu color. 'The bead wss immediately con
nected with the body, without any indication of a
neck.' Both wit neases state positively that tbe only
resemblance was to some creature of (he frog or newt
kind, while oue of tbeui (the surgeon saya that the
longer be observed it the more he was struck with
its resetublance to a gigantic salamander. Its baek
was oval in form. No eves or tins were seen and It
did not blow or spout iu the manner of a whale.
The greater parts of Its head was never seen, being
beneath the surface. Probably tbe creature is of a
race which survives from that very different world
in Which creatures of gigantic size seem to have been
so much commoner than now. There appears lobe
no manner of reason for doubling the very express
evidence so succinctly snd soberly giveu."
