Good Manner
It is the bcarimr of a man tow arda his fel

Tancemcnt in life Among tho many good
qualities of mind and heart absolutely neces
sary for a merchant to insure worldly success
there is no one the importance of which is
more real yet which at this is so generally
underrated by many of our business men
clerks and salesmen as courtesy that feeling
of kindness dignity and love for our fellows
which expresses itself in pleasing manners It
is an undeniable fact that many of us are un
fortunate in not being the happy possessors by
nature of this desirous and charming qoahty
good manners For all such it is an impera
tive dnty to study to cultivate and improve
themselves in this qualification by keeping a
vigilant and watchful caro over all their ac
tions and transactions in c ery day life with
their fellow beings History is crowded with
examples showinsr that as in literature tt is
the delicate indefinable charm of style not the
tnougut wnicn makes a woric immortal
Emerson says Give a boy address and
accomplishments and you git e him tho mas
tery of palaces and fortunes wherever he goes
he has not the trouble of earning or owning
them they solicit him to enter and possess
Amor strangers a rood manner is the best
letter of recommendation for a great deal de
pends upon first impressions and these aro
favorable or unfavorable according to a mans
bearing as he is polite or awkward shy or
self possessed Manners in fact are minor
morals ana a rnoo man is generally assumed
to be a bad man
Lord Chesterfield wrote to his son You
had better return a dropped fan genteelly than
give a thousand pounds awkwardly and you
had better refnse a favor gracefully than grant
it clumsily Air your Greek can never advance
you from Secretary to Envoy or frflm Envoy
to J lmbassador but your address your air
your manner if good may
When we como to look into the history past
and present ol some ol our best and most suc
cessful business men of the present day we
find that sine out often are men of pleasing
manners and that they owe in a great measure
their success in life to this important trait of
character lor by it tbey nave made mends
and customers though tbey may not have had
a dollar of capital to commence life with
Their good manners and pleasingaddrces made
capital for them or brought it to them As
Chesterfield said of tho Duke of Marlborough
44 his charming manner often changed an ene
my into a friend and to I denied a favor by
him was more pleasing than to receive one

Thirty jears ago a few persons of foreign
birth appeared in tho streets with hair on tha
upper lip and were objects of curiosity and
sometimes of public ridicule In 1 850 some
of the young swells of tho metropolis began
to wear moustaches but for some time no clerk
would venture to imitate them In ooo case a
merchant of Tine street who had just engaged
a clerk for twelve months or during good be
havior discharged tarn for wearing a full
beard claiming that tbe adoption of tbo fash
ion laid the clerk open to discharge tinder tbe
good behavior clause to the contract About
the same time a number of 1 cadi or merchants
gave notice that they would employ nobody
who wore hair on tbo upper lip As late as
1651 the senior proprietor of this paper made
his cashier shave off an incipient moustache
and soon after brought his son under tbe razor
In the church of DJvBetbune en Brooklyn
Heights an cldr who suffering from a lame
wrist allowed tls beard to grow rather than
submit toajbarber The habit beginning in
neccSBitjTcontinued on account of the increase
of CCmfort which it afforded and the elder
Slanted his beard before tho coccrccaticn con
stantly The result was laughable Many of
the brethren called upon the pastor to insist
noon dome awar with such a scandal as a
full bearded elder lie led them to his library
and showed them how some of the early fath
ers had pleaded against butting off the beard
He turned to Lactantius Theodore St Au
gustine ana Dt lypnan w ho had stoutly con
tended for the crotvth of the whole beard
He quoted from Clement of Alexander tho as
sertion that nature adomed men like a Hon
with a beard as a mark of streogth and pow
er When one of tho visitors asked him how
he would like it if tho clergy assumed the
moustache Dr Belhuno referred him to a
decision of the Fourth Council of Carthage
a d 252 can 41 in which it was positively
enactefl that a elene shall not shave his beard
and to a statement made by Luther in discus
sing the suDjeci that all tLe 1rotcstant mar
tyrs were burned in their full beards Thu
did not settle the matter for subsequently tbe
ladies of the congregation put in their protest
But in a few months a venturesome hrrrrbt

and in a little while smooth shaven faces were
no longer the rule but the exception Sew

which may be ol value
Prior to leaving Baltimore we planned the
whole of our trip calculating to be absent for
seventy days We started on the 7th day of
July and reached Baltimore on our return on
the 15th day of September having been pre

were twenty three days on the ocean three
days longer than expected I earing forty seven
days for he tourwhich were spent as follows
In Liverpool one day in London five days in
Fans ten days at Vichy Springs three days
at Geneva four days at Berne one day at In
terlaken three days at Jurich two days at
Lucerne two days at Lake Constance three
days at Falls of Bbine one day at Strasburg
two days at Mayence one day down the Bhine
one day at Cologne two days at Brussels
three days at Antwerp three days The en
tire cost of this tour of seventy days from
Baltimore and back to Baltimore for a party
of fire three of whom were ladie was 1
5120 being for each of the party 377 or
about S545 per day This was for all man
ner of travelling expenses including those ol
sight seeing carriage hire operas theaters
concerts fees etc We travelled fint class in
the cars everywhere except in Germany and
stopped at the beet hotels in no way stinting
expenses We were desirous of ascertaining
exactly for what Buch a summer trip could 1
accomplished and the accounts were kept
strictly Of course all of the party spent con
siderable in the purchase of whatever took
their fancy in aU the cities through wntcii we
passed But these expenditures were no part
of the travelling expenses It may be proper
to add that we were all persistent water drink
ers and although everywhere told that water
was unhealthy and ice positively injurious
we stuck to our favorite beverage using Ice
when we could get it and we return home
improved in health and invigorated by our
journey
