THE MIDNIGHT BLAZE
Tho celebration of the Kings fif
tieth birthday commenced on Tues
day Xov 15 at 12 oclock midnight
by tho ringing of bells firing a salute
bonfires on Punchbowl hill and tho
firing of bombs accompanied by mu
sic at intervals This midnight inno
vation lasted about an hour Owing
to ihe muddy state of tho streets from
Mondays rain thero was not a very
general turnout mest people content
ing themselves by getting up and
taking a look from their doors and
thon turning in again to refresh
themselves by sleep for tho festivities
to commence in tho morning
THE WEATHER ETC
The weather on Tuesday looked
threatening early in tho day but for
tunately no rain fell until nightfall
when thero was for a short time a
smart downpour rendering tho streets
at places almost impassable for pedes
trians The electric light has been
introduced for the jubilee into tho
palace and tho grounds each of the
principal gates having a brilliant
light over it adding much toward en
livening tho scones and incidents tak
ing place during the evening On
Tuesday evening however this factor
was dispensed with after 8 oclock to
give better effect to the brilliancy of
the fireworks Many present upon
noticing its absence thought the ap
paratus had failed to work but the
above explanation will correct this
theory
