ROBT EMMET THE MARTYR
Mi1 J D Popes lecture on the
life of Robert Emmet at the Y M
C A hall Wednesday night did not
draw a very large audience owing
undoubtedly to the many attractions
that were held at the same time
However quite a fair representation
was present to hear tho young
orator from the Antipodes Prom
beginning to end Mr Pope held his
audience in wrapt attention
A few minutes before 8 oclock
Mrs Ernestine Gray appeared and
rendered a selection on the piano
her efforts being applauded Mr
Pope after a few moments of breath
less silence commenced his lecture
by reciting a few lines of Breathes
there the man with soul so dead
etc He then went on describing tho
struggles which the Irish people haye
carried on for ages to give them lib
erty and tho country independence
Many noble and heroic men have
devoted their lives for their coun
trys emancipation from the bonds
of tyranny and to give her a place
among tho nations but their eilorts
are yet uncrowned and their country
still struggling for freedom
He gave a short biography of Rob
ert Emmet outlining his youth ana
patriotic devotion to his country s
cause Ho doscribed his un
successful plot which failed
through tho infidelity of men ho
trusted costing him his life le
told how Emmet appeared before the
court in 1803 to plead tho charge
against him for treason but his
crime was loving his country over
much
Mr Pope then delivered in a most
impressive uiuimoi juiuwou o -v
Before Being Condemned to Death
and received frequent merited ap
plause
He also sang The Dear Little
Shamrock in such a manner as to
inspire his audience with patriotic
feelings Mrs Gray gave two other
selections on the piano which were
well played Mr Pope than an
nounced that he will continue his
lecture at the Y M C A hall on
Friday evening The lecture is in
deed worth hearing Mr Pope being
a fluent and entertaining speaker A
largo audience ought to be present
on Friday evening Mr Pope con
cluded by singing in a spirited man

Native Sons of Hawaii
This organization had a double
observance of Tuesday one the
celebration of the birthday of Kame
hameha III the other the birthday
of Hon J A Cummins the one most
instrumental in the establishment
or organisation of the society known
as the Native Sons of Hawaii
In the forenoon a literary pro
gramme was carried out Mr J K
Kaulia in the absence of Mr S K
Kane made the address in commem
oration of Kamehameha HE telling
how that king divided land among
the natives and otherwise aiding
them in obtaining some indepen
dence Mr A7 S Wond addressed
those assembled upon the occasion
of Hon J A Cummins birthday
telling what he had done for the
organization of the society Mr S
Mahelona acted as chairman for the
occasion
A beautiful gold headed cane
was presented to Mr Cummins
by the society on tho end of
the cane was engraved J A

to J A Cummins by the Native
Sons of Hawaii March 17th The
motto of the organization was ex

In the evening a ball was given at
their hall which proved a very de

f ully decorated and the music was
furnished by members of Prof H

Plantation Labor
Tho S F Bulletin of March 7th
says
The Hawaiian Chargo dAffaires
to tho Court of St James is author
ity for the statement that the plant
ers of Hawaii aro considering tho
importation of coolie labor from
India Tho law now shuts out the
Chlneso and tho experiment with the
Japanese seems to be virtually at an
end The Scandinavians who went
there under contract found the cli
mate and conditions unfavorable
Tho Portuguese wore rather moro in
their element but contract labor on
plantations holds out little induce
ment to any white people Labor
hunting among tho islands of the
South Pacific has fallen into dis
repute as little better than piracy or
slave trading The East Indian
coolie is perhaps tho least objection
able of Asiatics and he is at least
of Aryan stock with some capability
of assimilation Why has it never
occurred to some of our colored peo
ple to try Hawaii The climate
and work would be just to their
liking
A Wittt Acknowledgment A
laughable littlo story is told of a
woman on tho witness stand in a
French court She was asked her

thirty years old
But said the magistrate did
you not tell me you were thirty
when you appearod before me two
years ago
I think it very likely she
replied smilingly acknowledging

TO SHOOT UNDER WATER
Something
New
in Naval
and Important
Warfare
New Haven Feb 23 C S
Bushnell of this city Vice-President
of the Ericsson Coast Defcnso
ComjJany which has tho old Des
troyer taken out of Brooklyn for
repairs says Wo aro fitting up
tho vessel for tho purposo of test
ing a gun that will fire under
water Now with tho heavy not
tings which the big war vessels
have for the protection of them
selves against torpedoes tho ordi
nary projectiles aro almost useless
But with tho gun that is to be
tested on the Destroyer wo can
make projectiles penetrate any of
tho nettings that are in use
We aro to use a lG inch gun
That which wo aro to experiment
with is being constructed and is
about half done It is to be about
thirty five feet in length The pro
jectile is to be twenty five long
and to throw it a chargo of
pounds of powder will bo
used The shell will contain from
300 to 400 pounds of
enough to blow up any vessel
afloat if struck right
Tho muzzle of tho gun will pro
trude ten feet under water and the
projectilo will be carried from 750
to 1000 feet beyond tho muzzlo of
tho gun before firing Wo intend
to try tho gun for tho first time at
Newport next July having obtain
ed from Congress an appropriation
for making tho tests
With a few such vessels as tho
Destroyer will bo when equipped
with our gun the armed fleets of
the world could bo swept out of
existence I believe this invention
will revolutionize tho naval gun
nery throughout tho world Ono
of our shells can be sent right
through the netting and into tho
side of a vessel whero a torpedo
could not penetrate
For tho prico that one of our
big ships will cost wo could build
and arm fivo smaller ships which
would ho hblo to sink tho best navy
afloat
EIGOLETTO
Tho curtain arose a little late
upon tho opera Eigoletto Vednes
day evening owing to the audience
being tardy in gathering Not so
large an audience was present as
Bhould have greeted tho presentation
of Eigoletto for the production was
well given Tho outline of the plot
as given in the programme was a
little misleading at first but was
soon made clear by their acting
Gilda daughter of Eigoletto has
if possible outdone her efforts
on previous occasions her voice ring
ing sweetly and clearly especially
in tho parting scenes with her father
and the Duke The latter Mr Stan
tini sang more clearly than on Sat
urday evening proving himself an
irresistablo wooer of Eigolettos
daughter Gilda unknown to her
father The carrying off of Gilda
was not perhaps as realistic as it
might have been but the sorrow
even madness of Eigoletto when he
realized that it was his daughter and
not Cepranos wife he had helped the
Dukes followers to steal was touch
ingly acted None the less affecting
was the restoration of Gilda to her
father the singing during this scene
can hardly be improved Eigoletto
enraged at the deceit practiced upon
him with hardly a friend sought
revenge which in the last act re
sulted so sadly for him His voice
ana acting tuny portrayed nis per
haps justly revengeful spirit Gilda
Madalina the Duke and Sparafucele
did their utmost to merit the ap
plause so enthusiastically given and
well did they deserve it
