"Isthmus of the Duricn Ship Canal, with} 1 full history of the Scotch ('ulony of 1):» rien, let'ernl maps, views (If the country, and original documents, by Dr. Culltn. F, R. Gt 5. Second edition, Lutulun: lxtii." We find it to be u. very interesting myth, and if the statements represent the whole truth, there is little reason to doubt thut n‘ ship canal will intersect the Isthmus at nm distant day. The line proposed for the, canal is about 80 miles east of l'nnunm.‘ The following extract from the Age, pre sents a concise View of the project. i “ A site for n practicable communication by nship cnnul between the two oceans] has atlnst been discovered by Dr. Edwurdi Cullen in the Isthmus of liarien, in the re-j public of New Granada, and under suehl flvorable circumstances, that it seems to, have been suggested by nature, for ttbottt' ten miles of the work is already done, byi a perfectly nutigable nnd titting river, thei Silvana, which runs into the the Gulf (ill SLNignel on the Pacific Ocean. From; the point where the river divides and di-‘l verges to the right. and left to Port liscos-‘ out and Caledonia Bay, in the Atlantic Ocean, 1 distances of less than thirty miles, nature oflers no obstacles, no opposition, no difliculties, being chiefly over level land. The highest cutting, it appears, does not exceed 150 feet ; and there are valleys be. tween the Cordileras through which the canal may be cut without impediment.— The entire distance from ocean to ocean is under fbrty miles. The ports at each end could accommodate a fleet lurger than was ever mustered, and both freed by their position from the frequent visitetions of hurricanes and tornadoes to which other localities in the western world are subject. The canal ism be wide enough for two of the largest ships to pass, and will be with out locks, free and open at both ends, and will rise and fall with the tide. It is ex - pected that the largest ships will make the tnnsit horn ocean to ocean in live hours, The flood tide on the Pacific side rises ten or twelve feet higher than ,on the Atlantic side; the stronger current will naturally be from this direction, which will opcrute beneficially on the harbor at Port Escosces in washing away and preventing sand gatherings, or any other accumulations. “ The locality of the route‘is extremely healthy, which is proved not only by the chrome of mosquitoes, but likewise by the great longevity of the natives of this and the surrounding districts. The soil is sin gularly fertile ; the farmer reaps his two, three, or erenfour crops a your; wheat arrives at maturity in seventy, and pots.- tocs in sigh” days. Perpetual spring relgns, winter isunknown. All the graduate of the tropical zone are within ‘ deven we is known toexist in not verydistnut ports. T illir (lprwsitinu to the Democracy, and it: newl ‘ Srht-mr {or the Future. 1 1. When the opposition to the ilemoernticl ‘party, in 13:22 '3s}, united under the name‘ 'oi' \\hi;<, they neon-ed that they had coma hineil fur a great patriotie purpose, nnd,i by dint of " panic " cries of all degrees 01"; iviulence, they succeeded in I'cvolutioniziin;j Congress, arrd‘in greatly embarrassing thel action of the heroic Jackson. They were‘ :trusted and tried for a time by the Ameri-l ‘ean people, and while they could hold to~l lgether they were able to enrry out theirl :Ineusures. We can but remember what, ‘thesc measures were when we recall their ltriumph in low—the result of their union! logainst the deniOeratic party. The bunk,‘ the bankrupt law, the tariff of 1842, the distribution of the proceeds of the sales oil the public lands. and the repeal of the in , dependent treasury, were the trophies of ithut era of whig rule. ’l‘hcse enorniities were sought to be justified by the pretence .lthnt they were necessary to the general vi welfare; but a very brief triul soon led to , their overthrow; and in one case at least— _lthat of the bankrupt law—the same Con _ gross that enacted the law, subsequently It and almost unanimously repealedit. These were a few of the consequences that follow ; ed the fusion of the opponents of the demo , cratio party under the name of Whig.— , 'l‘hcy combined for a patriotic purpose, as , they alleged, and sue were the fruits of . their combination. - A new idea has, however, oeenrred to I this opposition in 1854. They united for 1 success before, and their acts have become J historical. They now mum-t for victory. r in the one case they came together in one f party; now they separateinto many. The r name of whig is dead. lts charm has de . parted. Made a powerful wutclnvord by if such statesmen as Clay and Webster, it I- cannot be worn by those who discard their Ll examples. Hence new appellations are i- assumed; and now the country is told that o the game of the opposition is to let each !. faction tight under its own sectional bun u ncr; so that, when each has triumphed, e they may come together, and, in one grand y aggregate, throw themselves against the e democratic party. Thus we see the abo s litionists rallied in one quarter, under their Ll peculiar doctrines; the know-nothings or ganized in another; the money power in y another; and the advocates of class legis e lution in another. They profess to be L- guided, as usual, by honest and patriotic i purposes; but, as usual, their combination l' must end in the infliction upon the people ~ and upon posterity of a brood of evils for t more malignant and dangerous than any , which the country has endured as the legar ; ey ofwhigmajorities.—— Washington Union. 9 ....__.____. l Tulasox usmsnrsa 'ro ransom—When ‘ the avowul of lrcuaouablo continent; is ‘ tolerated in the American Senate, it is " not aurpriaing that they are responded to " and applauded in such naemblages as meet I! together to form wafilicns to mint the constitution and laws of the Union.
