Dr. Jnux Evans, (Geologist of Uri-gun 'l‘erritnry, has returned within the last \\t't'h from a (leohgienl surrey of the coun try bordering upon the Sound nnxl Strait: of “'zhhinlztnn Territory, and reports his investigations of the coal fields of “Hill”? hmn Hay and Dwulnish river, as ngrn-t .titi_\ disappointing him. A specimen of on 1' 'one hundred pounds weight is at prnent in the otliee of Secretary .\I.\~'I)X, awaiting: publie inspection, and a decision as to its~ ,praetieability for river or ocean steam nav ligation. E It is one of the most beautiful specimens Iwhich we have been called upon to exam ine, and although no geologist, we have ‘e\'ery assurance from Dr. Evan‘s, that it is lat least semi-bituminous eonl, and can in found to an extent and quality equal to the Vancouver Island coal. . l Dr. Eraxs informs us that the further north the better the coal, owing as he sup poses to the uphenvings of the earth Ithrough volcanic influences ; that the coal lof Skookum Chuck is of the same forma ‘tion, but not so well matured ; that there is a vein extending through the whole Ter ritory, but as before said, becoming better as approaching the north. The coal at {Goose Bay or any other of the California districts, being much inferior—actually lig nite.—ia comparison with the coal at liel~ lingham Bay or the Dwamish river. The great difficulty in the way of our coals not meeting with a speedy market at San Francisco, arises from the fact, as heretofore stated, of the over anxiety of proprietors to realize immediately proceeds in money for shipments made. For in stance,—two vessels shipped on board car goes of what was understood to be coal, ibut when tested it was found that slate, dirt, and foreign elements were intermixed in such quantities that by some masters of vessels it was pronounced impracticable for lrircr hr ocean steam navigation. E Had a proper course been pursued in the , development of the mines, and an adequate loutlay been vouchaafed for the prosecution iof the same, the coal fields within our bor ders would have stood “A number one.” i Dr. Evan‘s informs us that in the veins of coal which he has examined, there is in i‘terlard'ad from 1! to 15 inches apart, a [strata of slate. He termed this strata, mats, and in the excavation of these mines,‘ [with careful mining, he thinks they nan, ,without trouble be extracted. l Although not pronounced by” him as the best quality, he assumes that when coal is ‘scarce or high, it will ultloubtedly be used for ocean and river steamers. Our mister» tune has been, as above stated, that too‘ much was sought to be made out of the use of the mines with a disproportionate amount of capital. Some men expected to realize fortunes in a day, without a proper regard to a duo development of our resources. In ‘this they have been disappointed, and thus lthe coal that has been excavated and sent ito San Francisco has been measurably dis lhonored. i .We have every confidenee in the soguci ty, experience, end perfect knowledge of iDr. E. in the lined his profession; and Iconld the meet ”optical disbeliever of Sun ,Frnneisco be brought to witness the speci men alluded to It the office of the Secreta ry'of this Territory, (without analysis) he ‘would be forced to the conclusion, that des -1 pite the modesty of Dr. I'} , the coal would ,nmer ell proctieeble purposes, if fairly developed, the wants of the Pacific eosst. We are further informed by Dr. Euns, thnt limestone was found It Nsnimo, in the vicinity of Bellinghsm Bay, which vein he informs us extends throughout the entire ‘rnnge of the Cascade mountains. This fact 1 has been heretofore strenuously denied, end in still but I further proof of the intelli-| ‘ genee end research of the Geologist of Or-l legon. V Sandstone in considerable quantities was found to line almost the entire length of the Sound, of a superior qualily, and excel :rlnnt for building purpom.
