From the‘Detroit Advertiser. [ The Initials of Egypt. , Egypt swarms with magicians now, MI in the days of Moses, nor do the praqtitionv era of the present day bring any discredit; upon their renowhed ancestors, thus furnfi ishing strong circumstantial evidence of the truth of the inspired narrative. So won-E derful are the prodigies they perform, thnt, they have been deemed worthy of grave re-i‘ cital in works on Egyptian life and manner,‘ and of being vouched for by authors ‘ns‘ things which they saw and heard, but Whieh‘ they could neither explain nor account for; And some of them not only witnessed these, marvelous things, but actually learned how? to perform them, and yet were unable to‘ give any explanation, only that they did as,l they were told, and the result followed. i I have not turned aside a single footstep , to witness any of their performances, nor , need I, for they are forced upon me in the street to a frightful extent. Soon after my arrival in Cairo, I was sitting beneath the shade of an Acacia tree, taking lessons in Arabic from one of my Arab “friends,” when, upon hearing approaching footsteps,l I looked around, and at the next instant, I , was fall a rod from the spot in the opposite , direction, with asentence half spoken on A my lips. , As I had turned my eye, a man stood ‘ within a foot of me, with a serpent coiled around him, whose head protruded directly toward me, and he was eyeing me as though he wanted me for a meal. I besought my Arab companion to send the man away in steady, which he did. His suakeship was spotted. like the rattlesnake, but appeared to be much longer. in two or three in stanees I wal shocked in a similar manner. Thus serpents are said to be of the most venomous hind. T. Q. Ju. l —-——«.~—--~ . __ ~ L TuF. Exesmrms H Semen or KANE.— .The N. Y. Herald says that the survey of ithe propeller, "City of Boston," purchased by the Government to go after De Kane ‘and his expedition, supposed to be impris -loned among the icebergs of the North Pole, ihas resulted adversely to the use of the i propeller. The surveyors have decided that ishe is too old and too large for the pur lpose, being 550 tons burden; and it is un derstood that a small vessel, now on the stocks in the Philadelphia Navy Yard, of about 250 tons, designed originally for a Light Ship, will be used. It is intended to provide her with a. screw and engines {or propelling, and to give her a heavy press of canvass. The vessel will be provisioned by Henry Grinuell, Esq., whose generosity, it will be remembered, fitted out the expedi tion under Dr. Kane, and will probably be ‘ ready to sail about the first of June next. The command of this expedition is to be given to Lieutenant 11. l. liartsteue, who for some time past has been the commander of the mail steamer, Illinois, ruuuiug‘be tween New York and Aspinwall, on the California route. ‘ Lolm RAGl..\x.—Coptnin Norton, of the British army, states that in 1826 he gave one of his rifle percussion shells for ennnons to Col. R. ngrton to show Lord Fitzroy Somerset (now Lord Ruglun,) when thnt ‘personnge replied, “All inventions in the improvement: of arms tend to place the Weak on a levelJvith the strong; we are the strong, and therefore do not encourage im provementa.” Is it any wonder that with gsueh o field other, the British ll'lllf, with the best soldiers in the world, is so nineut ubly ineflicient? ludlan Reservations. _ ' The following reservations for lhellndinns ‘on Puget Sound having been wrveyedfor ‘hoving natural boundaries defining them, ‘iufornution is given to the public, that lot ‘tlcrs may take notion Accordingly in locu iting clnims.
