ROCK ISLAND RAILROAD BRIDGE.— From the Chicago Press of the 26th we extract the following account of tha condition and pros pects of this enterprise: "We took considerable pains to examine the Rock island Railroad bridge. It is en tirely finished over the slough, as is also the track on the Island. The rails are soon to be laid across to the main stream. The cribs on which the ends of the tables are to rest when the bridge is open are up and nearly i finished. The foundation for the central stone pier is all down and the work is raised nearly as high as the river's surface. The abutments are finished, as are all the piers except two or three feet of stone remain to be put on them and they will be completed. As the contractor can now devote all his ener gies to the central pier, it will be put up very rapidly. The scaffolding between the west abutment and the first pier is all up, and we •aw the workmen main cord of the bridge. 'i ne first span he workmen putting in place the first I cord of the bridge. The trial was confined to the rela tive meritr of Fairbanks', the S.-ale« Scales man ufactured by Duryee A Forsyth, R«x-hesler. N. Y., and a newly patented scale manufactured at Ver geiine«, V t. To te»t the real merit of thevculc*, it». t'omroitUe placeit upon the platform of a »eale hav ing the oapaeity of all toim, a weight uf 11*., and then removed the weight to xanous part»..f the plat form. Wish this weight on one corner of the Vttr gennes Scalc. the licam indieatad lbs., wlieu placet! on the opposite corner, the lieao, indicated only lbs., showing a difference of l.i 11.#., und when removed to the centre ot the platform, (he beam showed -5,3H7 |ls. A request was then made that the weight l»e again plated on the corner ftr«t tried, which was done, and the weight the beam now indi cated was U,.'(H2 llw.. showing a difference of 8 11*. from the first trial. This variutioti i.* attributabb 111 part, to the arrangem nt ef the platform upon the bearing* which forbid# the |M.j.-ibiiity of ire giving correct weight agreeing with itself The te«t was then applied to a Psirbatik S'ale, and when the weight was plain*! on one corner of the platform, th» beam indicated the true weight, H.MS lhs., il»f. second and third corners the result was ihe »ame: on the fourth corner a slight variation wa- p. r.vprilde. So extremely delicate wa« the operation of Fair bank 'c Scale. t(»paci'y six tons,) thai n quarter of a pound weight placed on any part of the platform, raised the 1eam. A Ihiryee A Forsyth Scale, of 40,000 lbs. wpa^ty was next tested, and like the \tT^imtj^ Seale, it failed to give correct weight, or to agree with itaell it showed a variation of u-n pound- when the weight was removed from one comer to another. One of Fairbank s small platform Scales wit* thin H»ted with I'. S. Standard weights, and although it had been in constant use fi. six mouths, it exhibited un erring accuracy. Them-aled weights were then plac ed on a similar scale inu'inufactured by Duryee A Forsyth, but the result Has far from 11 u-factory, one corner was half a pound too light, the ccntre half a pound too heavy, and another cerner twe pound* too heavy.—[Pennvylwnian. P|"^HE subecrib. having obtain a. ed the right of Lee County., is now prepared to take these beau tiful and never changing pictures/ on glass plates, at No. .'1, Third st. between Main and Johnson. The art has very re cently bi-en brought to a very high degree of perfec 1 tien, by Mr. Cuttine, the inventor, who ha* eecun-d a paU nt for fourteen yeae#, ih France, (irea: Britain I and the I nited SUtee. These pictures, so beautiful in tonu. bold and clear in effect, are universally ad mired wherever they are exhibited, and are rapidly taking the place of Daguerreotypes, which too often prove evanescent and changing in their characters. The AinbrotyjK' is taken upon the besi plate glass an indestruetable cement ia then put upon it, the ce ment soon hardens, and two glasses become in effect one, with the picture in the centre, aud may be set in monuments, sent to sen, or otherwise exposed to the weather in any climate, and will resist the action of the elements and retain its brilliancy for ages being an enduring as the glass upon which it is taken. The Ambrolypea are not reverse!, but are *een in the natural position of the sitter. Dugueireotypes ean be copied in this permanent style, and enlarged to any site. Children can be taken 111 clear weather, in two secoods. Daguerreotype a lock and apparatus for sale. W# W Artisl* JUTTI'IJK&TI
