MrftTiatevt A handle of clothes, ty)c£
OD ihe railroad track jest above tbe Packet
Depot, waa found this morning by Mr. Bel

Rhodee, a member of Company B» Third
Regi
•ent. It i« supposed, from two letter*
found in the clothes, that Rhodes committed
soiolde by drowning himself. One letter was
addressed to Miss Mary Bartlett, Pella, and
tbe other to Mr. Stewart, a member of hi*
company. In this latter be states tbat be
was lent on •c1!3estrueCtoh onafcbounf of
disappointment in love. Be also speaks of
having a shroud made with pockets, in which
he hsd placed stones to insure sinking. A
skiff is said to be missing in tbe neighbor
hood where the clothes were found, and it is
inferred that if aaieide was committed at all,
he rowed intd the middle of tbe stream for
fbe parpoee. He Was 22 years of age, and
it from Pella, Marion county. lie left hie
watch with a member of his company yester
day, and has bsen missed from the camp
since tbat time. A noticeable fact in regard
to his clotbec was that hie pants and shoes
were missing. For want of space we are
uoable to publish the letters, wbioh are
highly interesting.
jyArchibald Carpenter was yesterday
brought up before Tl' carder Lyman, charged
with having attempted to kill Felix L. Gar'
land in Jackson township, near Sugar Creek.
The defendant deliberately fired a rifle, tbe
ball of which passed very close to Mr. Gar
land, and from the evidence elicited, no
doobt is left of the murderous intention of
Carpenter. In defauU nf ££,000 bail ha was
committed to jail.
