A newspaper correspondent in giving
ao account of the discussion between
ickliffe and Lovejoy in the House the
#her day, makes the following report ef
ten minute speeob by Dunn, of Iodiaaa,
whom fttr. ^pvejc?y yislded the floor
The raterruptiou is a little unusual and
unexpected. Members look reund to see
«hal it moans. Mr. Dunn is ffom the
"Egypt" of Indiana, and though Repub

She gentleman has attributed to him a
aentwajeat that he never natertained, and
sever expressed, that be! had abandoned
fcia faith in the ability of the white men

Tba sharp, crabbed tones of Mr. Wick
Iffe are instantly heard, "I cannot yield,"
•ays Mr. Dunn. "I c^aim the right to
interrupt," returns Wielcliffe, with char
acteristic assumption. {'The gaotlexuan

Thus repaid from his own measure,

for generations bave been vnder the hu

that we oannot aafely pat arms in their

jou do not choose to have your sons aided
by such means, I do ohoose to have mine!
My son wrap in the battle of Vicksburg,
and there black men fought in the ranks
of our enemies, Shull wc not mutch
them with their own weapons'( Or is
the blood of our sons cheaper than the
market value of your slaves?
But the rebels shoot down negno1
prisoners, and the gentleman asks, what
will you do? Make white traitors ans

fight* for our oause must be treated as a
soldier, no matter what the oolor of his

And so he takes point after point of
the oljectious to the bill, and with a sin
gle stroke of hie sledge hammer logic, de
molishes it. He has the unbroken at
tention of the House and the applanae of
the crowded galleries as he proceeds. This
is no smart special pleading, no trick of
ue oratory. Here is a finely
balanced, unusually oalm and judicial
mind, wrought up to white heat. The
allusions to his son and brother and neph
ews, (for nearly all his nearest blood re
lations are in the army,) have brought
out the highest and noblest exercise of
hi# ample powers and the mental ma
chine, without jar or friction, but run
ning at a speed that fairly exhibits its re*
markable capacity, is with wonderful
force and wonderful condensation cover
in* the whole subject with aa armrnf
fact and lope that no attack can pena
trate. The effect is superb.
He drivea the last bolt home with a
blow that rebounds in applause through
the chamber and galleries, and with eour
tcous thanks to the gentleman from Illi
nois, resumes his seat. He has spoken
bnt ten minutes, but he has covered the
whole ground, and made the best speech
of the debate.
The gratified Repabliesna throng around
him to grasp his hand and tender their
congratulations. "That was glorious,
Dunn."
14
You oouldn't have done better
in a whole afternoon, Dunn." You
made the very best statement of the ease
any man oould make, and in the shortest
possible space." "Give me your hand on
that splendid speech, Dunn while Love
joy, resuming his remarks, opened with
"the gentleman «p ke so well, 1 wish he
had taken all my time." The warmth of
their cordiality is too much for the Indi
anian. "1 thank you, gentlemen," vitl
an air as if to Bay, "no more an' you lovo
me." "I thank you. It's right, and
that's all 1 care for. Give me a chew of
tobacco—that's all I want now." A bat
tery of tobacco boxes environs him on
the instant. "Here, Dunn, try this."—
"Take some of mine, Dunn." "You'll
find this pretty fair while from over
half a dozen desks a long Michi^ander
stretches out his box, with "Dunn, you
must bave a chew of Michigan growth af
ter that!"
A general turning of smrHng faces to
wards each other over the Republican
side ef the Hall, a general half whisper
ing exchange of "that was capital, wasn't
it?" and "bully for Dunn, it's a glorious
blow, and from just the right quarter
and the members turn agaio to ht-ar the
witty Iii'lianian condu lo paying his res
pects tn Mr. WiclJJit'.
Tiio iiroi blow "guts home" again on
the sorely belabored Kentuckiaa. I
wanted to ask the gentleman another
question, bnt I have worse luck with him
than Balaam had with the dumb animal
be bestrode!" WicklifiV's face works
savagely, and the House galleries roar.—
"Of course the employment of negroes
would save some white bloodon oar side*
I bare wanted to ask whether he thinks
theae negroes too good to be oaed to save
this white blood?"
And ao he goes on, goadlag the -old
gentleman deeper and deeper at every
thrust until the hammer fills.
