The bravery of Gen. Terry's troops is un
doubted but they only advanced to the
•tuck when tl.oir opponents bad been al
most crushed by the bombardment of the
Federal iron-clads.
The effect of this occurrence on the
contending parties can hardly be estima
ted. According to their usual habit, the
Southerners not attempt to conceal
their ohagrin at such a lo^ arid one of
their organs confesses, what some have
been disposed to deny, that the capture of
Fort Fisher will make tho port of Wil
mington useless for the parpwes of for
eign trade. But how far this new defeat
will increase their disposition fjr peaee re
maios as yet unknown. Not, so, how
e\er, with the North. The exultation pro
duced by thi* victory rather exceeds what
might have been expected at a time when
the Federal* have achieved so many suc
cesses. This is, perhsps, to be explained
by the previous failure, which had itself
followed the bootless naval operations at
Charleston The revolution in public
feeling tend* to make the North overvalue
its la«t exploit. The power of the fleet,
the aoeuraey with which it was brought
into action, Ir'gates and gunboats, iron
gide* and monitors, each taking up their
position and doing their work with the
preoi«ion of machines, the sucoeseful as
aault on the plic9 cuming bard upon the
disparaging arguments of General But
ler, the fiercencss of the struggle, and,
finally, the prospect of closing the last
great port of the South, have combined
to fill the North wi new confidence.
The navy especially ia highly gratified at
having played so distinguished and u-eful
a part It is the exploits of this branch
of the service which will be of most inter
est to "ur pr fensiitnil men. It seems to
be ascertained thai the fire of tho iort had
little effect on the liuils of the American
iron cluli They ar* said to have suffer
ed little, the marks of the Confederate tire
being only certain indications on their
sides and the shooiing away of their boats
and th" lighter parts of their equipment.

PAIGN.—While the guns thunder from the
surrounding forta their noisy welcome to
conquered Charleston, the more thought
ful begin to tremble before a new danger.
Beauregard is steadily retreating—yet
he is known to have thirty five thousand
troops. He makes no serious efforts to
resist Sherman's advance, defends no
river lines, avails himself of no natural
advantages, keeping out merely a flying
corps of observation on Sherman's front
and flanks, he falls steadily and rapidly
back. Must it not be for a purpose
When McClellan was withdrawn from
the Peninsula, few will have forgotten
bew narrowly we escaped irretrievable
disaster. Lee, reinforced by Stonewall
Jackson, stood between our two armies—
an overmatch for either alone. While we
sought to unite them, he hurled himself
upon one, drove it from "Cedar Mountain
to Culpepper, to Manastei JunotioD, to
Bull Hun and at last left cowering be
neath the guns that defended Washington
itself. To-day he stands again between
two armies of ours and, for Stonewall
Jack son, he has Beauregard marching on
interior lines to reinforce him. It is ut
terly out of our power t» prevent that re
inforcement. With it, Lee is as strong
•s Grant, and stronger than Sherman.—
What is thtre, then, to save us from a re
petition of the cecond Ball Run earn*
paign?
This only—that Geo. B. McClellan does
not command either of our armies and
that there is no Fits John Porter, inter
fered iu aohieving disaster, intrusted with
power to secure it.
Undoubtedly sound military science
•ow requires the rebel evacuation of R'oh*
mood, to the end of eff-oting the speediest
junction with Beauregard,. aod foromg
decisive battle outside of eathworks with
one or other of the national armies.
