*»JESDAY MOHNING, MAY 16. THIS London Prototypt reports a distressing accident which occurred in the township of West Williams on Sotiday last: "A young married woman. Mrs. Frazer, determined to bave her child baptised upon the day-men tioned. and for that purpose had to travel to the Centre-road, a distance from her house of about two miles, where the Rev. Mr. M'Pher son preaches in the Gealic language once every three weelu. Fearing that she should be behind time, the yonng woman wrapped the child in a cloak, and without paying much attention to it, walked hastily to the church, where she arrived in sufficient time to meet the minister and make known her er rand. The congregation was about to dis perse, but were detained to witness the cere mony, and the mother proceeded to disrobe her irvf{Mt in the presence of the company, when, as the clothing was gradually removed from its person, it became apparent that the child was dead. The consternation of the assemblage was extreme, and the poor mother became so distracted with grief as to renter it necessary to have her taken care of. In her haste she had wrapped her infant so tight as to pro other it, and before reaching her destination it was a corpse." The Richmond Examiner the fjWtwing silly warning in its columns "Enraged at the remarks of Senator Sher man respecting the letter of Wade Hampton, which Keverdy Johnson introduced in the Senate "the other day, bid Mr. Sherman to recollect Preston Brooks, and beware of Southern vengence. We trust the Senator will not neglect the warning. The last acts of Southern vengeance were assassination in Washington and wholesale murder and arson in Memphis. Against vengeance of that sort no loyal man of Mr. Sherman's promi nence can always be safe." The First Congressional Church at Pittsfield, Mass., has been organized 102 years, during which time between 2.000 and 3,000 mem bers have been admitted to its communion. Fifty-fi ve persons were admitted last Sabbath, which is the largest number ever admitted at one time, with a single exception, some forty five years a^o, when the number was eighty six.
