AUNT NERVIE AND THE
KEOKUK WATER POWER
"Aunt Nervie" could not wait until spring to write poetry, but the warm
days of December and the water power prospects inspired her into writing
a long poem about tne Keokuk water power. She entitles her efforts as
'That Water Power Business" and has written the following poem for
The Gate City and dedicated it to the Commercial Club:
That Water Power Business.
"Old Keokuk" is on the Boom. Since the news is on "the wing"
That the Water Power's coming to the City in the spring.
You may wander down on Main street you will not go a block
'Till you hear the people talking of the Water Pow?r stock
What is this big invention, does anybody know?
That takes the whole creation to give the thing "ago."
And when you read the papers, you never see a thing.
But the Water Power's coming to the city in the spring.
Everything's confusion here. There's whispering (on the side.)
And everybody seems to have a mania for a ride.
There's automobiles and buggies and and people too, galore.

She's going to tread her running gear from the city up the stream.
And all the other town about will have to hollow quit,
For Keokuk will take the lead and they will have to root.
Then wont the factories whistle and the bells glad tidings ~?ve,
For everybody in *'ie worli. is coming here to live.
We're going to catch the Mississip whatever else prevails,
And everything in Keokuk v/Ill ride around o. rails. s,.
^e will not need the "Lantern Club" to light us on our way,
(Tor the thing that we are looking for is coming here to stay.
To that man acros't the river, who don't know rocks from sticks,
Who says if its a fazel we may have to live on bricks.
This Water Power business may hand to him to drink. •••.
We're "going some" and the time will oome when we wont know day from
night.
We'll keep on the "boom" til there's not standing room fo
that will come here to light.
