Gardner, Monday, August 17. The honored guests and the chapter members gathered at the home of John R. Lawrence, Jr., 947 Iglehart avenue, for an Alpha Smoker. A brief program followed several rounds of cards. Speakers included Henry R. Thomas, Nathaniel Walter Goins, Jr., Robert Gardner, and Raymond Cannon. Arthur Royster, treasurer of Tillotson Col lege, Austin, Texas, was a visiting guest and brought greetings to the gathering from lota Chapter. Other greetings were read from Pvt. Nor man Lyght of Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri, and T. J. Porter of Chi cago. The other guests included Malalieu Woolfolk of Alpha Up silon Lambda Chapter, Alabama, Albert F. Harris, Beta Pi Chapter, Tennessee, Victor Calloway, Wil liam Cassius, S. Vincent Owens, Dr. Earl S. Weber, John M. Pat ton, with John R. Lawrence pre siding. Books called “My Record in the Service” were presented the inductees by the Chapter. Refresh, ments were served. At the close, the Alpha Hymn was sung. The men of the Junior Sterling Club entertained with a Smoker on Saturday, August 15, at the Ster ling Club for all the inductees who reported on August 18. Miss Rosamond Collier, 990 Gaul tier street, is in California visiting friends. Mrs. Freda Harris, 695 Carroll Ave., received a letter last week from her son, Bill, who is serving with the armed forces in Ireland. The Sterling Club entertained with a Rumßoogie Party, Thurs day, August 20. The Two o’Clock Bridge Club met Saturday, August 15, at the home of Mrs. Norman H. Howell, 953 St. Anthony Ave. First club prize was won by Mrs. M. Leo Bo hannon, second by Mrs. George 0. Berry, Jr., and the third by Mrs. Leroy Lazenberry. The next meet ing will be Saturday, September 5, at the home of Mrs. Cornelius H. Mobiley, 734 St. Anthony Ave. Mr. and Mrs. Don Bonaparte and daughter of Chicago are in the city visiting Mr. Bonaparte’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. E. A. Chapman, 707 St. Anthony Ave. Mrs. Alfonso Wilson and son, Cunnigan, of Omaha, Neb., were the breakfast guests of Mrs. Clar ence W. Wigington, 679 St. An thony Ave., on Monday, August 17. Mrs. Wilson and her son left Tues day, August 18, by motor for home. Mrs. Wilson has been visiting in the city for the past month and was the house guest of Mr. and Mrs. Sydney Williams, 857 St. An thony Ave. A Miss Geraldine Middlecoff, 541 W. Central Ave., spent ,a week visiting relatives and friends in Kansas City, Appleton, and Clin ton, Missouri. Miss Middlecoff is employed as a machine operator in a defense plant. Mr. and Mrs. James Logan, 825 St. Anthony Ave., are spending a two weeks’ vacation in Chicago, 111. Miss Annabelle Jones, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. R. Jones, 994 Iglehart Ave., celebrated her eight eenth birthday on Friday, August 14, with a Dancing Party given by her parents at the Sterling Club, Dale and Rondo. At the Rhodes meeting, Mrs. Fred Schuck was the first prize winner and Mrs. Rhodes, the second, and at the Reed meeting Mrs. William M. Hanna won the first prize, Mrs. William M. Central avenue, returned home Tuesday, August 18, from a week’s vacation trip at the North ern Lyght Resort at Lutsen, Min nesota, on Caribou Lake. . . . Charles Moore, son of the Louis Moores, who is serving with the armed forces, is stationed at Camp Lee in Virginia. Mr. R. Homer Stone of Louis ville, Kentucky, spent two weeks in the city visiting his daughter, Mrs. Lavinia Stone Murray, 953 Rondo Ave., and his sisters, Mrs. Curtis Raymond, 654 Rondo Ave., and Mrs. Sydney Williams, 857 St. Anthony Ave. Several social cour tesies were extended the visitor during his stay. Mr. Stone was in troduced for the first time to his twfo months’ old granddaughter. Mrs. Lottie Jenkins of Shuquluk, Mississippi, is in the city visiting her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. L. L. Murray, 953 Rondo Ave. Mr. and Mrs. John Morgan, 102 W. Bellevue Drive, Pasadena, Cali fornia, arrived in the city on Fri day, August 7, for a three weeks’ visit with relatives and friends here. They are the house guests of Mrs. Morgan’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl C. Walker, 1064 Thomas St., and also visited Mr. Morgan’s son, Ernest, and his aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. L. Ervin, 927 Rondo avenue. Mrs. John Chaney of Seattle, Wash., and her sister, Miss Thelma Hobson spent the week-end here as the house guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles P. Tyler, 1007 W. Central Ave. Several social courtesies were extended the visitors, among which was a breakfast on Monday, Au gust 17, given by Mrs. Clarence H. Wigington, Mrs. Charles Tyler, Mrs. Bert Shannon and her cousin, Miss Mc- Werder of Chicago. Rev. and Mrs. S. E. Ware of Pil grim Baptist church will leave Monday, August 24, for a vacation trip in Cleveland, Ohio, Pittsburgh, Pa., and they will attend the Na tional Baptist convention at Mem phis, Tenn., returning the latter part of September. From Los Angeles: Mr. and Mrs. Al Grey of Beverly Hills and Los Angeles, Calif., and formerly of St. Paul, left Monday for St. Joseph, Omaha and Chicago after spending some time in St. Paul visiting Mrs. Grey’s mother,'Mrs. Annie Slaughter, her sister Mrs. Pete Roland and her brother Mr. Frank Slaughter, all of 531 Aurora. Mrs. Roland and Mrs. Slaughter entertained for the visitors at a party Saturday, August ninth. Many old friends of the couple at tended to bid farewell to them. Dinner Party: A dinner party for eight was given recently at the Old Plantation club for Mr. and Mrs. D. M. Powell and their daugh ter Alma of Kirkwood, Mo. Mrs. Sally Harrison, 390 St. Anthony Ave., was hostess. The Powells were also entertained at breakfast by Mr. and Mrs. John Senior, 278 W. Central Ave. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Buckner were also present. Mrs. Powell is the sister of Mrs. Belle Benton of 845 Iglehart Ave. and Mrs. Pearl Buckner, 280 W. Central Ave. Mrs. Sarah Miller of Richmond, Va., and Mrs. H. M. A surprise party was given in their honor at the parsonage of St. James A.M.E. Church by the Senior Missionary Society, Senior Choir and Sunday School of St. James A.M.E. Church. The dining room table was ap propriately decorated with golden streamers and a beautiful bouquet of flowers with an attractively decorated heart-shaped cake grac ing the center of the table. Mr. Jackson re-enacted his pro posal to Mrs. Jackson and after being formally accepted, the cere mony was read by Rev. B. N. Moore. Rev. Joseph Jackson gave the bride away. Bridesmaids were Mesdames Cudellus Jackson, Doro thy Compson, and Bessie Powell, with Mr. John Waters as the best man. Following the ceremony, Mrs. B. N. Moore, soprano, sang “Be cause,” accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Nelson Balenger. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were pre sented with a gold colored chenille bedspread. Samuel A. Reeds Off for Virginia Mr. and Mrs. Samuel A. Reed, both well known in St. Paul for their activity in youth groups and the civic life of the community, left Thursday for Petersburg, Va. Mr. Reed, Master Sergeant in the United States Army, is stationed at Camp Lee at Petersburg. Mrs. Reed, the former Beatrice Shuck, was given a one year leave of ab sence from her position as librar ian at Tillotson college, Austin, Texas, so that she could spend some time with her husband in Vir ginia. They were married last Wednesday, August 12, in St. Paul. Pvt. First Class and Mrs. Rich ard W. Sessions are the proud par ents of a baby girl, born August 13, at Fairview hospital, with Dr. C. Master Hobart Mitchell, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hobart Mitchell, 3612 Elliot avenue, who has been vaca tioning in Detroit for the past two weeks, spent last week in Pomeroy, Ohio, the home of his father. Mrs. Mitchell will join her son in De troit some time the last week of the month. Mrs. Charles Burley was taken to Northwestern hospital on Tues day evening for an appendectomy. Mrs. Ruby Burton of Dallas, Texas, sister of Mrs. Charles Palms, 1051 Bryant avenue north, is in the city visiting on her two weeks’ vacation. Mrs. Theodore Jones, 3700 Fourth avenue south, entered Fairview hospital Monday, August 17, for a tonsillectomy. She is now convalesc ing at home. Mr. and Mrs. John N. Sanders and their small daughter, of Excel sior Springs, Mo., left for their home this week after visiting Mrs. C. M. Sanders, 3009 Garfield avenue, and his brother, George of St. PauL Mr. Sanders is principal of Lincoln High School at Excelsior Springs. Mrs. Fannie Pierre Lewis, 3824 Fourth avenue south, with a group of five women, made her monthly visit to Shakopee on August 13, to present a program at the State Reformatory for Women, there. Mrs. Gladys Lindberg was the principal speaker. Mrs. Lewis will attend the wedding of her grandson, Mr. Robert V. Singer, Jr., at Niles, Mich., Saturday, August 22. Grandmother, 81, Honored: Mrs. Robert Pierre, 3824 Fourth avenue south, gave a dinner August 15 in honor of her grandmother’s 81st birthday. Those present were Mrs. S.
