Mrs. Boswell and Mr. Ram sey returned to Chicago Sunday, Dec. 26, and Mrs. Ramsey returned Tuesday, Dec. 28. Mr. Bert Carter, 658 W. Central Ave., and his sister, Mrs. Lenora Ray, 2318 4th Ave. So., Minne apolis, left for Paola, Kans., Christ mas evening, where they were called because of the death of their father. Mr. Frank Branson, 248 Rondo Ave., has received word that his nephew, Lt. Walter Branson, Jr., is now stationed in England. Mrs. Lucille M. Williams and her niece, Miss Gloria L. Williams, 592 W. Central, had as their house guest last week, Miss Eulabell Moore of New York. Miss Moore, who is traveling with the new Broadway stage hit, “Three’s a family,” went to Chicago, Christ mas Eve, to join the company there. Christmas party: The Oak Leaf Art Club held their fifteenth annual Christmas party Monday, Dec. 20, at the home of Mrs. Carrie Wil liams, 1366 Blair St. Mrs. Lydia Brown read “The True Meaning of Christmas,” after which dinner was served and then the members ex changed gifts. The regular meeting will be held at the home of Mrs. Lydia Brown, 599 St. Anthony, Monday, Jan. 10. Before returning home they will stop in Kansas City, Mo., and Des Moines, to visit friends; Omega Party: The Omega Phi Fraternity entertained more than a hundred people at a dancing party at the Sterling Club last week. Members of the Omega Phi are Dr. A. M. Butler, Peevy Johnson, Robert Jones, Thomas Stovall, Louneer Pemberton, Earl Kyle, Burie Car michael, Louis Mason, Hammond Turner, Edward Spriggs and Donald Johnson. Ill: Mrs. 0. W. Lindsay is ill at her home, 276 W. Central Ave. Mr. and Mrs. Louis Moore, 662 W. Central, have learned that their son, Corporal Charles Moore, is somewhere in England. Mrs. Viola Munson, 290 N. St. Albans, was hostess Christmas at dinner to Rev. C. T. R. Nelson and Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Williams. Seaman Donald Warricks was home for a short visit with his wife, Ann, 481 Thomas Ave., during the Christmas holiday. Mr. Nelson Balenger, who is con fined at Ancker hospital, was per mitted to come home and spend Christmas day with his family. Seriously Ill: Private John E. Murphy, son of Mrs. Ida Mae Murphy, 1354 Thomas Ave., is se riously ill at a hospital in Pomona, Calif. Lieut. Elmer W. Harris, stationed at Camp Stewart, Ga., recently visited his father, Elmer W. Harris, Sr., 686 Carroll Ave. En route to camp, after his leave, Lieut. Harris was married in Arlington, Va., on Dec. 16. His bride, a native of Washington, D. C., is a student at the Junior Teachers’ College in Washington. Her maiden name could not be ascertained at press time. Rev. and Mrs. C. T. R. Nelson and daughters, Lydia and Sandra, left Monday morning, Dec. 27, to visit Rev. and Mrs. W. H. Thomas son at Waterloo, la. Rev. Nelson will preach the watch night service at the A. M. E. Church there, of which Rev. Thomasson is the pastor. He will arrive in St. Paul New Year’s morning. Mrs. Nelson and the children expect to remain in Waterloo for a longer period. Dr. Lillian Lewis, 675 Iglehart Ave., is spending the holidays with her sister, Mrs. Will Robinson, in Kansas City, Mo. Mr. and Mrs. S. E. Mcln tyre celebrated their Golden Wed ding anniversary last Sunday at a family dinner served at their home, 954 Fuller Ave. Eight relatives were guests. Mr. and Mrs. Mclntyre were mar ried on December 20, 1893, at the home of Mrs. Mclntyre’s sister, the late Mrs. O. D. Howard. The Mclntyres have lived in St. Paul continuously since their marriage. During the early history of St. Paul Mr. Mclntyre, a retired rail road employee, was active in com munity affairs. He was an original member of the T. S. T. C.’s, a char ter member of the Sterling club and for many years an active member of St. James A. M. E. church. The Mclntyres received many congratulations from friends and relatives in honor of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Dorothy Foster Weds Private James Edwards, Jr. Miss Dorothy Foster, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Glen Beck, 994 Igle hart Ave., was married to Private First Class James Bailey Edwards, Jr., of Camp Carson, Colorado, son of Mr. and Mrs. H. G. O’Neil, 487 St. Anthony, at St. Phillips Episco pal Church, Monday, Dec. 27, at 8 p. m. Father Lewellyn Williams per formed the ceremony. The bride dressed in rose moire taffeta, carry ing yellow roses and white chry santhemums, was given away by her step-father, Mr. Beck. Miss Juanita McGrouder, the bridesmaid, wore blue chiffon. The matrons of honor, Mrs. Avis Taylor and Mrs. Thelma Butcher, wore pink and blue dresses. Thomas Clemmons was best man. The reception, given at the Elks rest, was attended by approximate ly 130 guests. Mrs. Avis Taylor, a cousin of the bride, came here from Chicago to attend the wedding. Happy New Year Church Notes Camphor Memorial Methodist Church Notes: “The ABC of Christmas” was the subject of the sermon delivered by our pastor, Rev. Clarence T. R. Nelson, last Sunday morning. Mrs. Tessie Sonion sang a lovely Christmas solo and Mrs. Roberta Davis sang by request “Precious Lord.” The at tendance at the service was good and we were pleased to have three of our service men present: Ser geant Edward Montgomery, the son of Mrs. Addie C. Few who is now being hospitalized at the Veterans’ Hospital in Minneapolis; Cpl. Charles Eskeridge, son of Mrs. Vera Eskeridge, stationed at Scott Field, Ill.; Freddy Johnson, son of Mr. D. M. Johnson, stationed at Camp Forrest, Tenn. Rev. Nelson read a touching letter of gratitude for a gift of a book “For Service to God and Country” from Private Ernest Lynch, son of Mrs. Lottie Milton, who is now stationed in North Africa. The pastor was given a gift of money by many present at the suggestion of Mr. James Rideaux, chairman of the Trustee Board. He declared that this was the best Christmas he and his family had enjoyed since com ing to St. Paul. The choir presented the pageant “The Holy Nativity” at the eve ning service hour, directed by the president of the choir, Mrs. L. Viola Monson. The young people of the church will be in charge of the Watch Night service which will begin at 11 p. m. Friday night, Dec. 31. This service is for adults as well as young people. The Camphor young people are sponsoring this service as are young people in Methodist churches over the nation. On Sun day, Jan. 2, Dr. W. H. Williams, our district superintendent, from Detroit, will preach at both the 11 a. m. and 7:30 p. m. services. He will administer the Lord’s Supper, assisted by our pastor.—Church Re porter. Border Methodist Church News: Our growing church family has suf fered from many cases of influenza from which infection Mrs. Bura Hawkins, Mrs. Alene Neal, Mrs. Dollie Pattilo, Mrs. Minta Mosley and Mrs. Ebzania Riley have been confined to their homes for some time. They have now recuperated or are recovering and we thank God. Mrs. R. W. Kelley suffered a sprained back and was confined to the University hospital for five days. Last Monday she was sum moned to Marianna, Ark., to the bedside of her mother, Mrs. Minnie Johnson. The last Sunday morning wor ship of the year witnessed a high, spiritual communion. The Christ mas goodwill and cheer was raised in the singing of the carols; heightened in the message which pictured the Incarnation amidst scarcity, privation, torture and op pression and was climaxed during the invitations when Mrs. Mary Clardy and Mrs. Margaret L. Kel ley united with the church and Mr. Paul Kelley, brother of Rev. Rob ert W. Kelley, the pastor, was con verted. The congregation rejoiced. A candlelight watch night service is planned for Friday, Dec. 21, from 10 p. m. to 12 midnight. Mr. John Moultrie will give appropriate or gan selections. Mrs. Mabel Hen derson, Mrs. Alice Moultrie, Mr. W. C. Jones and Mrs. Viva Jean Vaughn will render solos. The mes sage is to be given by the minister. Testimonials and periods of conse cration will give each worshipper a chance for spiritual expression. Sunday, Jan. 2, is covenant Sun day. Holy Communion and baptis mal services will be conducted. May all members and friends of Border renew their vows unto the Lord.— Church Reporter. St. James A. M. E. Church News: At our 10:45 a. m. service, Dec. 26, Rev. B. N. Moore delivered a ser mon of notable merit. His subject, “A New World a Coming,” was taken from Revelation 21:1-4. With this world in chaos and much dis satisfaction, we need a new world of peace on earth and good will to equal rights and justice to all man kind, a greater Christian endeavor from pulpit to pew with a new vision disproving race hatred and other wrongs contrary to moral rights. In the absence of Mrs. Cora E. Moore, senior choir director, who was suffering from influenza, the choir rendered efficient service. Mrs. Prentice Harris was guest pianist. Miss Connie Duke, soloist. Miss Jewell Hopkins, of Kansas City, joined church. The following were visitors welcomed: Mr. and Mrs. Mil ton Shanks, Minneapolis; Mmes. Of our Deaconess Board, Mrs. Cudellus Jackson labored arduously that our sick and shut-ins were pro vided with Christmas cheer. Like wise, every inmate of Crispus At tucks Home was the recipient of the Board’s yuletide hospitality. A number of members and friends have pledged victory bonds to our building fund. One or more is to be presented each Sunday. Success is ultimately assured. Rev. B. N. Moore has finished the course for instructor of “Races Liv ing Together” in the Ramsey Coun ty School of Religious Education. He finished with hon<.s. BROWN NEWS: Mrs. Mabie Harris, president of the St. Paul Women’s Council, has an nounced a change in the regular meeting days of the Council. Here after the meeting days will be the first and third Monday of each month. The change has been made due to many conflicting club dates. The next meeting will be held Mon day, January 3, at 2 p. m. All wom en are urged to come and give sup port to this organization in the New Year in order to make the Council a real and strong force in the Com munity. Meetings will be held in the Women’s Club Room. BETTY DODD MOVING UP IN CONTEST It is reported that Betty Dodd is moving up in the popularity vote contest or perhaps correct reports are not getting into the office. The public is urged to get be hind favorite candidates in the search for Miss Hallie Q. Brown of 1944. Victory Club, 16 years and above, Thursday, Jan. 6. Adult classes will be opened at the de mand of those interested. There will be a call meeting of the Club 553 on Sunday, Jan. 2, at 8 p. m. John M. Whitaker who has been in the Army for the past year is now back on the Hallie Q. Brown staff to take charge of the music department again. Margaret Smith Marries Paul Kelley of Ohio Miss Margaret Smith, a resident of Phyllis Wheatley House, and Paul A. Kelley, of Springfield, Ohio, were united in marriage Christmas day at 3:30 p. m. by Rev. Robert W. Kelley, pastor of Border Meth odist Church and brother of the groom. The vows were read in the upstairs parlor at Phyllis Wheatley in the first wedding ceremony ever held at the House. The bride was dressed in green velvet and carried sweet peas and white carnations. Miss Ethel Smith, bridesmaid, was her sister’s only attendant. James Smith, a friend, was the best man. The re ception was held immediately after the ceremony in the parlor. Guests were Mrs. William Patrick and son, Billie; Mmes. Mildred Thomas, Bryant Grigsby, R. W. Kelly, James Smith, Miss Polly Lacey and Miss J. Gray. Mr. and Mrs. Kelley are at home to their friends at 511 Bry ant Ave. N. Protperoua 1«44 Mrs. Curtis Chivers, 4017 Clinton Ave. S., is recovering from a ton sillectomy at her home. Other guests were Mr. and Mrs. Vincent Del Valle, Cuba; Mr. and Mrs. C. Lynch, New York; Jerry Wilson, New York; T. Richards, W. M. Smith and Miss Essie R. Mason, of Minneapolis. The quartette with Jerry Wilson at the piano enter tained the guests. This is the first Christmas Mr. Abbey has spent at home in twenty-three years. Sgt. Johnnie Crenshaw, Ft. Mr. and Mrs. James Mitchell, who formerly lived at 2904 4th Ave. S., are now living at 2813 Pillsbury Ave. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Willis, 1814 15th Ave. S., had as their guests Sunday, Dec. 26, at a dinner, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Deering, Mrs. Edna Boswell and Miss Willa Booker. Baby Boy Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lester Jones, 1523 Bth St. S., was born Christmas day at Fairview hospital. 0
