Church Notes
Camphor Memorial Methodist
Church Notes: “The ABC of
Christmas” was the subject of the
sermon delivered by our pastor,
Rev. Clarence T. R. Nelson, last
Sunday morning. Mrs. Tessie
Sonion sang a lovely Christmas solo
and Mrs. Roberta Davis sang by
request “Precious Lord.” The at
tendance at the service was good
and we were pleased to have three
of our service men present: Ser
geant Edward Montgomery, the son
of Mrs. Addie C. Few who is now
being hospitalized at the Veterans’
Hospital in Minneapolis; Cpl.
Charles Eskeridge, son of Mrs. Vera
Eskeridge, stationed at Scott Field,
Ill.; Freddy Johnson, son of Mr.
D. M. Johnson, stationed at Camp
Forrest, Tenn. Rev. Nelson read
a touching letter of gratitude for
a gift of a book “For Service to
God and Country” from Private
Ernest Lynch, son of Mrs. Lottie
Milton, who is now stationed in
North Africa. The pastor was
given a gift of money by many
present at the suggestion of Mr.
James Rideaux, chairman of the
Trustee Board. He declared that
this was the best Christmas he and
his family had enjoyed since com
ing to St. Paul.
The choir presented the pageant
“The Holy Nativity” at the eve
ning service hour, directed by the
president of the choir, Mrs. L. Viola
Monson.

service is for adults as well as
young people. The Camphor young
people are sponsoring this service
as are young people in Methodist
churches over the nation. On Sun
day, Jan. 2, Dr. W. H. Williams,
our district superintendent, from
Detroit, will preach at both the 11

Border Methodist Church News:
Our growing church family has suf
fered from many cases of influenza
from which infection Mrs. Bura
Hawkins, Mrs. Alene Neal, Mrs.
Dollie Pattilo, Mrs. Minta Mosley
and Mrs. Ebzania Riley have been
confined to their homes for some
time. They have now recuperated
or are recovering and we thank
God. Mrs. R. W. Kelley suffered a
sprained back and was confined to
the University hospital for five
days. Last Monday she was sum
moned to Marianna, Ark., to the
bedside of her mother, Mrs. Minnie
Johnson.
The last Sunday morning wor
ship of the year witnessed a high,
spiritual communion. The Christ
mas goodwill and cheer was raised
in the singing of the carols;
heightened in the message which
pictured the Incarnation amidst
scarcity, privation, torture and op
pression and was climaxed during
the invitations when Mrs. Mary
Clardy and Mrs. Margaret L. Kel
ley united with the church and Mr.
Paul Kelley, brother of Rev. Rob
ert W. Kelley, the pastor, was con
verted. The congregation rejoiced.
A candlelight watch night service
is planned for Friday, Dec. 21, from
10 p. m. to 12 midnight. Mr. John
Moultrie will give appropriate or
gan selections. Mrs. Mabel Hen
derson, Mrs. Alice Moultrie, Mr. W.
C. Jones and Mrs. Viva Jean
Vaughn will render solos. The mes
sage is to be given by the minister.
Testimonials and periods of conse
cration will give each worshipper a
chance for spiritual expression.
Sunday, Jan. 2, is covenant Sun
day. Holy Communion and baptis
mal services will be conducted. May
all members and friends of Border
renew their vows unto the Lord.—
Church Reporter.
St. James A. M. E. Church News:
At our 10:45 a. m. service, Dec. 26,
Rev. B. N. Moore delivered a ser
mon of notable merit. His subject,
“A New World a Coming,” was
taken from Revelation 21:1-4. With
this world in chaos and much dis
satisfaction, we need a new world
of peace on earth and good will to
equal rights and justice to all man
kind, a greater Christian endeavor
from pulpit to pew with a new
vision disproving race hatred and
other wrongs contrary to moral
rights.
In the absence of Mrs. Cora E.
Moore, senior choir director, who
was suffering from influenza, the
choir rendered efficient service.
Mrs. Prentice Harris was guest
pianist. Miss Connie Duke, soloist.
Miss Jewell Hopkins, of Kansas
City, joined church. The following
were visitors welcomed: Mr. and
Mrs. Mil ton Shanks, Minneapolis;
Mmes. Pearl Williams, Kansas City,
Kans.; Mercedes McCowan, Chi
cago, Ill.; Miss Ethel Smith, Messrs.
A. Livingston, Omaha, Neb.; S. P.
Massie, Jr., Little Rock, Ark.; Lt.
Richard L. Stokes, Jr., Camp Swift,
Texas; Lt. Stanley Harris, Pvt.
Milton Beauford, Ft. Snelling.
Of our Deaconess Board, Mrs.
Cudellus Jackson labored arduously
that our sick and shut-ins were pro
vided with Christmas cheer. Like
wise, every inmate of Crispus At
tucks Home was the recipient of
the Board’s yuletide hospitality.
A number of members and
friends have pledged victory bonds
to our building fund. One or more
is to be presented each Sunday.
Success is ultimately assured.
Rev. B. N. Moore has finished the
course for instructor of “Races Liv
ing Together” in the Ramsey Coun
ty School of Religious Education.
He finished with hon<.s.
The pastor’s subject at the 11
a. m. service Sunday, Jan. 2, will
be “A Pastor’s Prophecy for 1944.”
