This year for the first time in the his tory Of the University of Minne sota three tan youths will don the maroon and gold as regulars. It is almost unbelievable that in the year 1963 the Golden Gophers will field its most heralded threesome but it is true. Coach John Kundla has followed the wise judgment of football Coach Murray Warmath and re cruited in the Pennsylvania, and North Carolina areas. Coach Kund la also went to Michigan to pick up Archie Clark. The Pennsylvania lad, Don Yates, is from Uniontown, Penn sylvania the home of ex-Gopher footballers Sandy Stephens and Bill Munsey. Louis Hudson is from North Carolina. The young Gophers have already banged Kansas State, University of Houston and lowa State. Their schedule resumes with a home game against South Dakota Sat urday, December 14. The team will then be tested by Bradley at Peoria, Illinois on December 16. On December 19, Thursday evening the young club will meet a strong Wichita club at Williams Arena. Wichita will probably be the Strongest team to test the young Gophers. On December 21, Drake Univer sity moves into Williams Arena. There is plenty of good basketball coming your way, so get in line for your ticket. • • 9 The University of Louisville also has its first Negro players this year. One of them sopho more, Sam Smith, should be starting in the pivot before long. Sherman Lewis, Michigan State’s fantastic "Mighty Mite”, was topped by Navy’s Roger Staubach and Georgia Tech’s Billy Lothridge in the balloting for the 29th annual Weisman Trophy, and missed be coming the second Negro to win the award. Sherman was also voted Michi gan State’s most valuable player. Abe Woodson, one of the bright spots on the listless San Francisco 49ers‘ football club is on the verge of establishing the most impres sive kickoff return record in the history of the National Football League. He holds these kickoff re turn records: Most yards gained in a lifetime —-3,938 (set this season); Most returns one season —37, (1962); Most returns one game —7, vs. De troit, (1962); Most yards one sea son—l,ls7, (1962); Most seasons leading league, 1959 and 1962 shar ing record with Lynn Chadnois— -1951-1952 and highest average life time —30.1. Currently, Abe leads the league with a 33.8 yard average for 26 returns. Abe, the dazzling runback artist, really stays busy. • • Remember Levi Jackson, the Yale University fullback of the late 1940’5. In 1950 Levi joined the Ford Motor Company in an administrative capacity. Recent ly he was appointed as industrial relations manager of the Ford Plant in Ypsilanti, Michigan. • • Not until a few years ago were Negroes permitted to compete in the big money tournaments of either golf or bowling. Then sud denly the doors were opened to both and in walked Charley Sif ford (golf) and J. Wilbert Sims as a competitor in bowling. Wilbert set an all-time record for the event by bowling an 1512 block and became the second highest player in any tournament play here and abroad. In setting his record pace, Sims rolled 18 straight strikes, one of bowling’s truly rare performances. • * Floyd Patterson, former World’s heavyweight champion, arrived in Sweden last week to begin train ing for his comeback fight with Italian ace Sante Amonti, January 6. 1964. Floyd attempted skiing for the first time and tried his luck at the Swedish slopes. Floyd hit the deck 12 times in a row. He dusted the snow off of his ski pants and thereafter renounced skiing for the safer climates of the boxing ring. • • Old timer Sugar Ray Robinson, the former welterweight king and five times middleweight champion, is also campaigning in Europe. Sugar Man said, "I mean to con tinue boxing because I want my middleweight title back.” They say Robinson at 48 is as cocky and jaunty as ever, but in side the ring the moves come hard. In Grenoble, France recently Sugar Ray scored a listless win over Andre Davier. This was his fourth fight in six weeks . . . count, three victories, one draw. All American Gale Sayers, of Kansas is the only player ever to crash the big eight conference elite 2,000 yard career rushing circle as a junior. The 20 year old Jayhawker’s rushing total now stands at 2,042 yards even with a poor year in 1964, Gale should be able to top the conference career mark of 2,562 held by Dave Hoppman of lowa State. • 9 Third baseman Don Buford of the Indianapolis club of the In ternational League was named Player of the Year by “Sporting News” magazine.
