|w!j3S!#iMW- itwynmi'H -M5-"#t%KillsS23&a JOHN SMITH. e Individual Bearing- This Sauie Wants to Die. He rejoices in the somewhat unfamiliar name of-'Smith," to which is prefixed the equally unfamiliar "John." John Smith re sides on Wacouta street, between Eighth and Ninth but, if John Smith had had his own way on Tuesday night, he would not be re siding on Wacouta street to-day. Of course, there is a "woman in the case/' for there is a Mrs. John Smith, but this man and wife seem to bave taken each "for worse" only. There heems to be but precious little "bet- ter"' in their marital relations, and that's just what ailed Jonn Smith on Tuesday evening, who, by the way, has only been recently hbeiated from jail, where he partially served out a term of sixty days for an assault and battery arising out of matrimonial infelici ties. This ill-assorted couple had a quarrel on the evening named, which transcended all previous quarrels in bitterness. John determined to end his and her troubles, not with "a baie bodkin," but with "a cup of cold pizen," which he procured in the shape of an ounce phial of laudanum, the contents of which he swallowed, told his wife, went to bed sajing to his spouse, like the individual infatuated with "bonny Annie Lawrie," "I'd lay me down and dee." Shortly after mid night, he slept so soundly that Dr. Boyd wat, summoned, who. in turn, summoned Dr. Murphy, that special aitist with a ftoiDnch-puiup An examination of the somnolent John decided the latter npon his course, and a vigorous emetic was ndmiuistered under his direction by the former, and John Smith didn't die woith cent. Mis. John Smith was per fectly indifterent as to ber spouse's lecovery, .HK] lemaiked that the doctors might "let him die,'' and piobably that's the very rea son John (smith didn't die. At 1) A. M. yes teidny Dr. Murphy called upon the would-be "demmtion moist and unpleasant body,"' found him all right, and alone in the house, Mis. Smith having gone out washing. To a GJLOBI. leporter, who called upon him last night, and asked him as to whether he wasthe all light again. Smith lephed, "All right, of course I amnever was anything else." RIVER MATTERS. 7*ot Gleaned by tlie Wet IJZml liepoiier Yesterday. The benent3 resulting from the lecent rains are numerous and wide spread, not the least being an improved stage of water in that gieat free thoioughfare and freight reg ulator, the Mihsissippi river. Already a swell of one inch is lecorded b^ the gauge, and still rising, promising a fair stage for some time to come. The K. N. packet lied Wing came in about 3 o'clock yesterday morning, bringing in a .oed freight trip and a number of passen gei8. She left on her return for St. Louis nt 12 M. Cdpt. Sencerbox is in command of Minnestoa, a fact that will make her a invt rite with "ye old timeis." The Minnesota river steameis Aunt Betsey and Otter came in during Tuebday night, the fust named with two barges of brick Irom Cnaska, and the latter with one barge and self loaded with brick from Henderson. These two iriivals will give anew impetus to building improvements, delayed somewhat for the want of brick. The steamer Diamond Jo left Red Wing bound up, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon, and is now at the levee, if no accident hap pened her, discharging something over three hundred tons of freight she has for this port. The K. N. bteamer, Belle of La Crosse, left St. Louis for St. Paul at 4 p. M., Tues day. The next packet due here, is the elegant Tv. N. steamer Clinton, which ought to throw out her plank at the levee some time to-morrow. The St. Louis Times of Monday says: Commodore Davidson returned yesterday, from Davenport with the gay "War Eagle. The trip was a success in every particular." The passenger packets of the K. N. line are gradually woiking into positions for the season's business. As before stated, the company nm three lines this seas on, one to Keokuk, another to Davenport, and still another to St. Paul. All these lines will be daily. The Davenwort line is a new departure, the intention being to make the fastest time and closest connections ever made on the upper Mississippi. This line will be composed of the War Eagle, Golden Eagle and Lake Superior, all three regular race horses," for speed. The St. Paul line will also be daily, seven staunch and fast running boats composing the outfit. Ot these, three will connect with the Davenport line, and four run through to St. Louis. The boats on the two lower lines have been do ing splendidly this spring, the quick time and fine accommodations attracting a much larger passenger business than in any season since the iron rail came into active competi tion. The Pittsburgh boat yards have turned out six new boats for the upper Missouri this spiing, viz.: Gen. Terry, Helena, Gen. H. Rucker, Chas. H. Tompkins. Eclipse and F. G. Batchelor. PEBSONAI,. H. P. Rubie, of the Rush City Post, at the Windsor. Hon. D. M. Sabin, Stillwater, was in the city yesterday. J. J. Hagan, Boston, and J. 0. Hatch, New York, at the Merchants. II. G. Finkle, a leading merchant of Moor hedd, is at the Merchants. Gen. L. F. Hubbaid, Red Wing, registered at the Merchants last evening. W. S. Walton, editor of the Wabashaw Her ald, visited St. Paul yesterday. Nr. E. W. Winter, of the West Wisconsin railway, Hudson, at the Metropolitan. State Secretary Irgens will return to-day after ii brief visit to his home in Mower county. P. B. Walker, of the Northwestern Lumber man, paid St. Paul a business visit yesterday. Hon. Henry Poehler, Henderson, having com pleted his business in St. Paul, returned home last evening. Hon. S. W. Furbei, Cottage Giove, tried Col. Allen's noon day meal yesterday, and pro nounced it good. State Superintendent Burt ill depart to-day for Mantoiville, Dodge county, to be in attend ance there upon a State teachers' institute. Gen. Tompkins, chief quartermaster at de paitment headquarters, this city, and Col. E. Rice, U. S. A., left for Chicago last evening on official business. Hon. E. T. Hyland, member from Dakota county in the last House of Representatives, was in the city yesterday, making his head quarters at the Windsor. Among the arrivals at the Metropolitan yes terday were T. P. Roberts, M. Oppenheim, New York E. H. Jewett, Chicago Jno. M. Lauch lan, Cleveland, O. John. R. Coykendall, Min neapolis. Mr. B. C. Ernest, representative of a Pitts burg iron house, and who annually spends beveral weeks in season in fishing and hunting Minnesota, is temporarily domiciled at the Meichants. Capt. Ara Baiton, the business sheriff of Rice county, passed through this city on his return home from a meeting of the trustees of tbe Soldiers' Orphan's home, at Winona. Mmnesotiane registered at the Merchants yes terday as follows: M. Heath and wife, Has tings C. E. Bostwick, Duluth Robert Slaughter, Stillwater D. J. Higgins, Atwater G. K. Gilbert, Glencoe Andrew Larson, Will mar. Among the aii ivals at the Windsor, yester day, were the following Minnesotians: George Spencer, Duluth L. L. Day, W. W. Holcomb, Hutchinson E. Horton, John L. Bjooks, Rock Creek D. A. Strong, Lake City C. T. Wood bury, Anoka. Mr Wm. Box, ex-sheriff of Wabashaw coun try, was in the city yesterday, looking after the Bhiprnent of eight head of horses to Crook hton, at which point he is about to locate in the livery and agricultural machinery business. Wabashaw loses, and Crookston gains, a good pitken by the change, T' '^'uM^uimum iininriiiri riiiinrcI'mm nrmmirnii m,'., i m%%m' ^iuiygg|SBWB^fJitjL-'it!.* ui4iw|jiirii *&* *f**' i*Tf CITY GLOBULES. A The Fort Snelling bridge commissioners meet this afternoon at 3 o'clock. A session of the moot court was held last eve* ning in the old court house. A hand-rail has been placed along the stair way leading to the municipal court room. It was needed. There are not over $1,000 of the seed wheat appropriation remaining in the hands of the State treasurer. The Boat club received to-day a four-oar galley from Stillwater, purchased from the club at Stillwater. A gentleman, who returned to this city yes terday from Stevens county, says that, if the weather there holds good, breaking will be in full blast in two weeks' time. Pius IX Benevolent association, a new soci ety, has elected the following officers: Patrick McManus, president J. W. Cartwell, treasurer and G. W. Anderson, secretary. The exterior of the Wild Hunter tavern, on Jackson street, was being repaired yesterday. It is a pity it was not torn down to make way for much needed improvements at that point. At the usual monthly meeting of the State Fiiemeu's Life association, held in Minneapo lis on Tuesday, eight new members were added to the list, inch now numbers a total of 460. The pavement has not yet been relaid over the spot that caved in on West Third street, op posite the Rogers block. In its present condi tion, it is, to say the least extremely unsightly if not dangerous. The lecture upon "Have Men Outgrown Christianity?" which was to have been de livered last evening in the New Jerusalem church, was indehnitely postponed, in conse quence of the paucity of the attendance. Peisonal taxes are being paid into the county treasurer's oflice with tolerable promptitude, but, if the real estate taxes are not liquidated a little more lively than at present, a host of people will "get left" under the provisions of the iron-clad tax law. The driver of the extra stieet-car home on Fourth stieet hill is at his old trick again, of permitting the whiffle-bar of his horse to scoop u\) the mud upon the Wabashaw and Cedar street ciossings of Fourth stieet, thus deluging tb.em.tto an almost impassable con dition. W Me&bis. W. Warner, Channing Seabury, and Frank Keogh, went out on the St. Paul & Sioux City load, yesterday afternoon, to Bloomington, for the purpose of depopulating that section of their share of the ducks there most numeriously congregated, if leporta are not in error. The boaid ot regeuts ot the State univeisity was to have held a meeting jesterday, but, as the State board of immigration meets to-mor row, at which the Governor would necessarily have to be present, and as the board of regents could not have concluded its session in time to pei nut his attendance at the former, the latter board adjourned without transacting any busi ness. State Auditor Whitcomb is in daily leseipt of letteis inquiring for "land, land," and heing eajs he never witnessed such a mania for land as is now prevailing. He, therefore, expects that the local sales of school, internal improve ments, agricultural college and university lands, in Koek, Nobles, Cottonwood, Redwood, Renville, Lyons and Clay counties, which commenced on the 7th prox., will be largely attended and will be highly profitable to the State. Ben Woodmansee. the well known trainer and horseman, was in the city yesterday. Mr. Woodmansee has some thirteen head of horses, old and young, on his farm near Anoka, some of nich have already acquired fame on the turf, and others, which it is hoped will, when given an opportunity. Plucky little Orient, still holds an honored position in Mr. Wood mansee's string. The little horse has wintered well, and is ready for new contests and new victories. The tiain upon the St. Paul & Sioux City railroad, arriving in this city yesterday at 11:10, encountered, on the way up, a fearful storm in northern Iowa. Snow fsjl in abundant quan tities, some of it yet lingering in odd nooks upon the outside of the cars when they ailived here, while the wind blew with such hurricane like ferocity as to partially unroof the sleeper. When the more temperate zone of Minnesota was attained, no snow was falling, although the wind continued quite strong. The through train on the main liae of the St. Paul & Pacific, due here at 10 A. M. yester day, did not arrive until about half-past 4 o'clock. The time was lost on the outrun, during the storm of Tuesday night. The run down from Morris, 159 miles, was made in six hours, or over 26 miles an hour. Passengeis by the tiain bring the news of the ditching of a tie train, beyond Breckenridge, yesterday morning, just after the passage of the regular passenger train. No person was hurt, and but little damage done by the accident. Mr. Charles Chambers, Owatonna, sbeiiff of Steele county, passed through the city yesteiday afternoon for Stillwater, having in his custody Wm. Aldricks, sentenced to the penitentiary for a ear and a half for burglary. In addition to his other business, Mr. Chambers finds time to devote a good deal of time and money to that most noble animal, the horse, he being the owner of some eighteen head of as fine blood stock as there is in the State, some of which promise to make a good record for themselves in turf contests in the future. The right of way for the Hudson River Falls railroad, which will be an important feeder of St. Paul and is being largely built by St. Paul enterprise and capital, having been seemed, the contract for the earth work of the whole has been let, and subcontracts there under have been executed. Grading was com menced about the middle of the proposed line on Tuesday, two corps of engineers are engaged in Betting the slope staking, and the grading, it is fully anticipated, will be completed by June 15. Should this be accomplished, it is highly probable that a locomotive will give its first snoit River Falls on July 4. Shortly after six o'clock last evening, an aged couple, apparently man and wife, both in a staggering stage of intoxication, quietly took seats on the stone step of the tobacco store on Wabashaw street, next to the American house The man had three carpet bags, which he calmly deposited on the sidewalk. The^r were con veyed to the police station, and furnished with lodgings. When there, the man produced a ticket- addressed by a lady of the city to the secretary of the Society for Improving the Condition of the Poor, requesting that official to inquire into the case of the bearer. Did the secietary provide the whisky? Whenever a rain storm visits this city, the space between the rails of the street car tracks, upon Wabashaw street and other level spots, is forthwith converted into a lagoon of filthy water, which is scattered far and near at every tread ot the horses. This has not only the effect of beautifully bespattering foot passen gers, but it keeps the borders of the stieets in a disgracefully muddy state, for days and days, after they would otherwise have dried up. Then, again, this depression between the tracks, even in dry weather, is an eternal cause of buggy springs mashing. And the public is beginning to inquire, who is to blame for all this? Father Berghold, of New Ulm, Brown count}, returned yesterday from the Eastern States, which he visited on a commission from Bishop Ireland in tbe interests of Catholic coloniza tion. Duiing his two months' absence in that behalf, he traveled through New York, Penn sylvania, Maryland, Kentucky, and portions of Ohio, lecturing in Buffalo, Baltimore, Cincin nati, Louisville, Harrisburg and other promi nent cities. As Father Berghold is a whole souled man and understands his business, his mission was highly successful, being greeted wherever he appeared with crowded and enthu siastic audiences. He invited all who had money to buy provisions for one year and toamount purchase the fee of theirlands, to come to the fertile plains of Minnesota, and received hun dreds of assurances to do so in response. Alderman Grace don't propose to longer con tract his sphere of operations to the mere run ning of the city government of St. Paul, and in forming one. of the great force engaged in building its palatial residences and magnificent business structures. Not he. And so to give his powers room to expand and grow up with the country, he has joined the great and rapid ly increasing throng of "horny handed gran- gers." His landed possessionsthat is, theGBIGG8 tract that is to constitute the "Grace Place" are located in Nobles county, and consist of section and a half of virgin soil. Thither Mr. Grace, casting behind him the .attractions and temptations of city life, proposes to hie him self next week, and arrange for the immediate breaking of two hundred acres for needing an other season, and hereafter the "seed time and harvest" will occupy a prominent place in his fcusylife. STILLWATER NEWS. The members (ladies and gentlemen) of the Mannerchor met last evening at their ball to organize an amateur dramatic so ciety. Gns Borein, who has been visiting his old home in Wexis, Sweden, returned home this week, having been gone just five months to a day. Mr. Josephus Farnham, of Anoka, and Miss Ella Gove, of Stillwater, were mar ried yesterday at the residence of Mr. W. A. Nobles. Prof. Schilling, our talented musical di rector, is making arrangements to place np on the stage the opera bouffe entitled, "The Doctor of Alcantara." The most of the characters have been selected and we predict that when presented it will be an entertain ment that will be an honor to our amateurs and a credit to our city. Edward Chandler, who was released from the penitentiary last Monday, having served one year for larceny, is again np to his old tricks. On Tuesday afternoon he visited Mrs. Davenport, a (grass) widow lady re siding on Second street, when after exchang ing the usual compliments, they swapped knives, and Edward, the naughty boy, left uncermonionsly with the madam's pocket book, said to contain the sum of ten dollars. His trial took place yesterday, but was not ended when our reoorfc closed. LOST AND FOUND. ccW ^O FOUND. Large red and white^spotted cow.
