Chicago News.
List Friday morning the gifted musical
critic of our esteemed oomtemporary, the
Chicago Tribune, printed a very ssvere
criticism vpon Miss Henson, the singer,
because dur'ng a performance of tho
"Messiah" she omitted the famous air,
"The Trumpet Snail Sound." Miss Hen
son'.- modesty has prevented her from
justifying this omission, and we deem it
an act of simple justice to explain how the
lady came to be guilty of the sin charged
against her by the astute critic of our es-
Icotemporary. The inspired author
of the "Messiah" "wrote "The Trumpet
Shall Sonna" for a basso, and the author
of Misd Benson's being did not endow Mis3
H?nsou with a basso voice. Naturally,
therefore, Misa Heuson omitted the basso
air ia question. In all fairness, tha critic
of our esteemed contemporary should have
aimed his gun at either the author of the
sous or the author of the singer.

The governor of Mississippi on yester
days delivered his message. He recom
mended the printing to be given to the
lowest bidder; that district attorneys be
paid salaries, and that the railroad traffic
ba ie^a!attd by legislation.
Governor McLane of Maryland in big
message says he will cooperate with the
general assembly in maintaining and fos
tering a system of public sohools, e.nd will
ask for legislation limiting the hours of
labor for men, women and children en
gaged in certam employments, and will
als"o advocate trade unions which have
bten of much advantage to working
men.
True Policy for the Future.

One of the oldest and most successful

true polioy for the future prosperity of
the country is the abolition of the duties
on raw materials, in order that our manu

the world's markets. He expressed per
