Bonds —Railroad mortgages firmer; Ni w York, West Shore & Buffalo nvo3 rallied to &BJ^ but closed at 573^. The transactions in New York, West Shore & Buffalo fives reached the enormous total of $5,098,000 to-day, which makes a grand aggregate of $15,753,000 for the -week; the total issue is jS'O,OCO,QOO. The bonds wero again heavy to-day and leading capitalists are said to bo liquidating. The Commercial Advertiser says it :- Btill asserted by persons in a position to judgo, that Vanderbilt is naiDg vigorous efforts to get control of the road. One of the stories, which is &a;d to h"*Te had the greatest effect in depressing the prices of bonds to-day, was that the company proposed to issue _ a sort of mechanic's lion on the rohd to take preco deuco of the first mortgage bonds. This is~a3 quickly pronounced impossible, as the oora pft-jy C!ianot go ahead of the first mortgages. There are good reasons to believe that negotia tions are in progress by which the New York, West Siiore & Buffalo company expects to be soon placed in possession of the money neces sary to complete the road. A leading banker eaid this could be done by means of a second mortgage or income band. The impression pro vails that the bear party has been operating in the bonds during the week for the purpose of demoralizing stock speculation. The bond* fell off from 60% to 57}$, rallied to f«K aud closed at u1%@,51%. A meeting of the directors of the company was held to-day, at which plans to secure financial relief were discussed No de finite action was taken, but it is stated on good authority that the company will probably issue $25,000,000 of income bonds, non cumulative, bearing either 5 or 6 per cent, interest. State Securities — Quiet. Stocks stock market opened strong and higher on announcement that the trouble over Utah business had been settled by the formation of a new pool and prices advanced Ji@lM per coot. Shortly after 10:30 failures in the grain trade had a depressing effect. The decline, however, brought in buying orders and the mar ket became again firm. tar 2:15 Union Pacific was purchased freely up to 77%, which affected the general list favorably. Buying became quite spirited towards the close and a confident tone characterized the dealings. The improve ment was based on the official confirmation of the reported formation of a pool by the Union Pacific, Chicago, Burlington & Quincy and Den ver & Rio Grande roads aud by an announce ment that the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy di rectors, at a meeting to-day, had appointed a committee to meet a committee representing tho roads forming the new western alliance, with a view to effecting a settlement. The rise was further assisted by tho reported advance in su-wl rails to 537 a ton and by a belief that the deoiu* in wheat will stimulato the export movement in the same. Tho short interest was largely in creased during the morning, especially in the cases of Louisville & Nashville, Union Pacific, Delaware, Lackawanna & Western and Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul. In the final sales the market fell y&@,% per cent. Speculation closed firm. As compared with last night's closing prices are. \i@,% per cent, lower except for Den ver & Rio Grande, Missouri Pacific, Northern Pacific preferred, Union Pacific and Western Union Telegraph, which are }£@}4 percent higher. Oregon Navigation broke to 98>3 regu lar and 94 seller sixty. Pullman Palace Car fell off from 114 to 111 and rallied to 112%. Tho declire in this stock was brought by the report that G. M. Pullman was a heavy seller of New York, West Shore & Buffalo bonds to-day. Cleveland, Columbus, Cincinnati & Indianapolis dropped I}<j to 65 and Oregon Short Line 5% ,to ■■:. American Express rosso 2to 95 and New York & Texas Land 1% to 139 bid. At the board oi! trade yesterday morning there was little interest shown in options. No. 1 hard for cash was off lc, but the principal business was done in regular, and as a representative sale we quote three cars by sample at 90c. There was some frosted wheat sold at 72c. It was a good plump berry and would have graded No. 1 but for the frosted berries. There was little done in corn which, however, maintained its prices not withstanding the break in the outside markets. Oats were quiet at Friday's quotations. Throe cars of No. 2 mixed were sold at 31}^c to ar rive and a lot of No. 3 white at 31c repre sent the state of the market. There was considerable businos done in ground feed. A lot of seven cars was sold p. t., but three cars at $20.50 fairly represent the market. Hay moved rather freely at fair prices; several cars were sold at $7.75 and some specially good wild realized .00. Timo by was sold at #10.00 but ona lot was disposed of at 50c less. Bran again is stiffer and scarcer. One lot was soid at $13.50 but this was to fill an order and can hardly be said to show the quotable price. There is no improvement in the "drummer trade" of general produce, and tha commission business is slow. Dressed moats come in slowly, and prices are a shade higher than quotations : There still continues a scarcity of good fresh, dry picked poultry. Medium grades of butter are slow, and gease is a drug, cheese is flat: flour and bread stuffa quiet. Bran is scarce and high. Hay is in better demand and higher.
