No. 108 North Third street, St. Louis, Mo.. is our Eastern Agent. 7jbOC'A3La I'DEZM l - THE new Masonic Hall in this city forms the up per story of Pfouts and Russell's stone building on Wallace street. The dimensions are 60 x 28, and when completely fitted out as designed, it will be as handsome a lodge room as can be found in any part of the Statps. The furniture has been repainted, and look, is neat and substantial as masons could de sire. 'The pillars and globes were painted by J T. Hen derson, and are fully as elegant in design and credi tabl, in executior as any we have seen. The ante room and platform are already carpeted, and the carpet for the all! is on the way up the River, in the Fanny Ogden. It is intended to have cushioned seats for the brethren. D. W. Tilton and Co, presented the Lodge wi;h a very fine picture of Washington; the frame was furnished by Daniel Hutchinson. Mr I'earce has contributed a ballot box of the new pat. tern, with round (white) and square (black) ballots. A set of as fine silver jewels as could be found in C'hcago, and which cost $305, is expected daily by the coach. Doctor Frary deserves great credit for the zeal and perseverence he has exhibited, in the fur theranc of this enterprise, which was of his own concepti,,. The brethren of Virginia City Lodge No. 4.3 and Montana Lodge U. D. say they are de termined to have as fine a Masonic outfit as can be seen any where, and as they mean what they say, and are in a country where men dig money, they are like ly to keep their word. CvAL Discovaemt.-.-We have seen a splendid spec imen of anthracite, belonging to Judges Miller and A. S. Potter. The vein is located at Big Hole, and the coal burns freely when ignited in the flame of a common candle. Judge Hosmer has also shown us specimens of the same variety of coal, of as good quality as can be found anywhere, brought from the Dearborn and Pretty Horse Island veins, about forty three miles beyond Helena. The Dearborn seam is four and a half feet thick at the cropping, and the other, five feet. They were discovered by William Barker. Our readers are aware that there is a whole country side of this mineral on the Missouri, and that a mine of bituminous coal of good quality has been diecovered at Summit. Hurrah for Montana! Coal, wood, iron, water, gold, silver, lead, copper, grass, grain, and free mountain air. This is the country for good men and good women to live in. PipEs.-Nick Kessler has brought wlth him from Europe a complete stock of first class Meerschaum Piper. The design, quality of the material, and the finish of these articles cannot be surpassed. No one that needs a genuine Meerschaum need remain unsup plied. Nick is going over to live at Blackfoot, where he will keep a saloon in his old style. He will take with him a selection sufficient to keep the boys uover there in smoking trim. Persons desiring to avail themselves of the chance now offered, can obtain ipos tfrom Messrs. D. W. Tilton & Co., at the City ook Store; Roath & Co., same place; Messrs. But lor, Wallace street, and Hale & Co., Jackson street. The last two firms will have some for sale at their branch establishments at Helena. A smoke out of a good meerschaum is the very acme of fumific en joyment. THE freight and pasiengers by way of the river are fast arriving. The Deer Lodge has made three tripe, bringing up the cargoes of heavier boats. The names of the vessels whose lading has arrived at Ft. Benton, up to our last advice@, are the Deer Lodge, Yellowstone, Benton, Grant, Effie Deans and St. Johns. The last two ran up to the mouth of the Marias and discharged at Ophir. The following boats were expected immediately: The Sam Gaty, David Watts. Rouanoke, Fanny Ogden, Marcella, G. W. Gra ham, Twilight and Lillie Martin. T.E note of preparation has sounded; cavalry are organizing; Firemen are looking at the glass front ways, sideways and every way, to see how the new uniform looks. Joe Magee is in a state of perpetual locomotion, having an eye to the absolute perfection of No. 1 Hook and Ladder; while Charley Curtis, from Helena, as large as life and twice as natural, is sacrificing himself on the altar of Montana Fire Company No. 2. The ladies are engaged in making raids on the dry goods stores, and there is not an idle person about town that does not feel uneasy at the stir about him. NOTICE.-The member'of Pioneer Hook and Lad d;r Company No. I will meet for drill in the Oling house Hall, at eight P. Y., on Monday evening. By order of JOE MAGEE, Foreman. N. B.-The names of any members who do not turn out in uniform on the Fourth of July will be struck off the company roll. STAR RE:sTAURANT.-The Star Restaurant is open to-day for the reception of guests. The building and accommodations are all that can be desired. The want of a house in which : man can get what he neeti without paying for what he does not need, is now supplied. The separate entrance to the Ice Cream Saloon will be much appreciated by the ladies. Go and see for yourselves. THE CELEBRATION ON THE FOURTH..-ThO citizens may look out for a fine time on the Fourth. Besides the usual routine procession, an opportunity of fra ternizing with the inhabitants of Nevada, who seem bent upon doing theirshare, and who will return with the cortege, and take part in the proceedings in the afternoon. Let every man, woman and child turn out and celebrate the glorious occasion. A bIIL with fifteen stamps will be placed on the ground of the Oro Fino Company, Hot Springs Dis trict. as soon as it can be hauled from the river. Thirty-five additional stamps are coming by another boat. The power and machinery is adapted to fifty £tamps. TEERE Was a heavy hail shower on Tuesday even ing. The celestial buck-shot made such a rattle that it was with difficulty the voice conid be heard, if the owner was under a shingle roof. This was fbllowed by rain of the wettest kind. The weather has been bright and lovely ever since. QuAsrz Muss.-We are informed by Mr. Busch that seven quarts mills are on the way up the river for this Territory. They are to be located in Black foot, Alder Gulch and Hot Springs Districts. POLICE COUrT -John Crab, charged witt! being drnk--dismised. E. F. Travis, asault-flned $5 and coats. PROPERTY holders have been notified to clear up the Streets in front of their lots, after this is done, the Marshal will keep the thoroughfares clear, hav ing a cart for the purpose. THE WEATHER is decidedly hob-at last! Quick silver is hunting for 90 degrees in the shade. If weather was a mercantile article, surely VirginiaCity could supply the world. We have it in every variety, and each kind A No. 1 in its own line. ARRIVED.-We had the pleasure of shaking hands with Geo. M. Pinney, Esq., U. S. Marshal for Mon tana Territory. THE Hook and Ladder Truck, after divers interest ing and tortuous peregrinations through town, is now receiving the finishing touches from the hand of J. T. Henderson. ALDER GriLCH. -Ali damage by the flood is about repaired, and the dust is beginning to settle at the riffles as in days of yore. E. OLINGHOUss & Co., corner of Jackson and Wal lace streets, have for sale two sets of superior black smith's tools and a quantity of quicksilver. WANTED.-A married woman without children, as housekeeper for a business firm. Apply at the City Book Store. THsn Marshal is not through with the dogs yet. HELENA ITEMS. Arrxa a week's absence we return to find ourself almost a stranger in our young, fast and prosperous town. New buildings finished, and in all stages of construction, greet our eyes wherever we look. The clink of the hammer and the rasp of the busy saw resound through the streets, from early dawn till dark. Building is progressing very rapidly on the upper part of Bridge street, and some fine stocks of merchandise have been opened out here. Mr. Col lins, of Virginia City, is as busy as a nailer fitting up houses of all kinds along that street. We know that he took a contract to erect a building 40x22, and to finish it in the best style, within four days. We haven't quite mastered the process, but we know he is a "fast man," at any rate. The other end of the town is holding its own well in the race of pro gress. The best building yet erected is Taylor, Thompson & Co.'s storage and commission house, which will be opened next week, as our readers will see by the new advertisement of the firm, in our next week's issue. SHOT THE WRONG BIRD.-One of the dromedaries which lately came into the Territory, was quietly grazing near Snow Shoe Creek, when a hunter in search of game observed the wonderful brute. Think ing that he was about to contribute a new name to the list of American quadrupeds, he fired. Down sank "the Ship of the Desert." and up ran the hunter. On discovering the anatomical peculiarities of his prize, Nimrod evaporated with rapidity. Being over taken by the owner, and informed in a very pointed and energetic manner that he had shot one of his pursuer's camels, with an inimitable nonchalance, he exclaimed. "Well, Mister ! you can have the camel if it's yours." On mature reflection, the camel shooter has determined to go for elephants on his next hunt. Taa Posr.ns all over town announce that the Grand Pic-Nic on the Fourth will come off in Owy hee Park. Everybody, and more especially the rep resentatives of the fair sex in this portion of the vineyard, is on the look out for fancy articles of attire. Were we anxiousto obtain a "love of a bon net," a jockey hat, a neat pair of gaiters, fancy shoes, or any of the infinitely important, yet mys terious and unnameable articles belonging to a lady's wardrobe, we should go to Poznanski & Behm, Bridge street. Everything needful in that line is there, and also all kinds of gentlemen's clothing. MoaE FREE THA WELCOrE.-On Monday morning, an enterprising unit of the "floating population," named Wm. White, confiscated the saddle of a horse belonging to Captain ShaBon, while standing in a corral. Pursuit being made, the offender was over hanled, and received an invitation to partake of the county hospitality. He boards at the "Cease to do evil and learn to do well," Helena, and has been pre sented with some massive jewelry, in the shape of anklets. He never will be able to tear himself from us. MORE INDIAN MuRDEx S.-As the pilot of the steamer U. S. Grant was out in a yawl sounding the channel of the Missouri river, with four deck-hands of the boat, the party were fired upon by Indians, and three of the men killed. The pilot and one of the hands made their escape. The former swam the river, and reached the boat, which was aground about one half mile below, in a state nearly approach ing to nudity, his path lying through heavy thickets of underbrush and beds of prickly pear. OUTRAGEous.-We conceive it to be our duty to call the attention of the authorities to the highly improper practice of galloping horses through the, streets of our town. A very smll brain ired with tangle-leg, ensconced behind a low forehead, and a very big pair of spurs, are usually the most noticea ble articles of the rider'. outfit. The public safety demands the stoppage of the practice. rAxoma "Sorr."--One of the teder-feet being anxious to become rich in a ha.Py, tried his fortune at the "ten dice game," in the OsFoni ch e, one night last week. He came out at the wrong door, his personal estate being diminished by 235. OLrvsa Co.'s Coauas to Virginia arre arod depart daily. The stoe to loot makes ti weekly trip.
