Anaconda News. WAS DISMISSED CASE AGAINST SAM LANDRY AND OTHERS COMES TO NAUGHT. SAWYER ANXIOUS TO CONVICT However, the City Attorney Wishes to Do It Unaided and Alone and in Due Legal Form— After All Law Breakers. (Special to Inter Mountain.) Anaconda. Dec. 26.—The cases in police court against Sam Landry and several others were dismissed bv Police Judge R. J. Haynes last Saturday afternoon. The attorney for the defense, G. B. W inston, moved for the dismissal on the grounds that no legal arrests had been made. He quoted to some length from several books of law. His point seemed to be well taken and the court granted the motion of the defendants' attorney. City Attorney Sawyer objected to any of his power being usurped by Attor neys Duffy and O'Leary, who were em ployed by the complaining witness and who were, he said, endeavoring to push themselves into the case. Mr. Sawyer's objection was also sustained. The city attorney declared that he wanted to see the offenders arrested and prosecuted, but he wanted it done in a legal manner. He insisted that he was ready to prosecute every denizen of Mainville, but before he undertook it he wanted to be furnished with sufficient proof that the laws were being violated to justify such action. He did not want to put the city to the expense of the trial of such offenders un less he had some show of making a con viction stick. 'To do this it is necessary," he said, "to have pretty clear evidence that the laws are being disregarded. If the complaining witness will furnish me with this and file a complaint in legal and proper manner I will push these prosecutions to the end." CASES IN POLICE COURT. WAS PLEASANT DAY CHRISTMAS WAS ENJOYED SMELTER CITY PEOPLE. BY MUSICAL PROG PAM RENDERED Several Sleiguing Parties Were Given the Children and the Anaconda Livery Stables Had a Busy Day. (Special to Inter Mountain.) Anaconda, Dec. 26. — Christmas day passed off quietly in Anaconda. Outside the exercises at the various churches, there was very little going on. i-rivate dinner parties were numerous, to be sure, and many a housewife put forth the effort of her life to make the spread prepared for her family and in vited guests just about the best in the land. Sleighing parties were quite popular during the day. Inquiry made at the livery stables elicited the fact that the available supply of cutters was exhaust ed. This statement was borne out by the merry jingle of the bells heard in almost every direction. There were a large number of bob-sled turnouts arranged for the pleasure of children. It is needless to say they took great delight in the spin given them about the city and out into the country. The roads were in excellent condition for s'.eighing; the bare places caused by the Chinook of a few days ago were covered up by the snow which fell on Christmas eve. At the cnurches the exercises were elaborately arranged and the musical features were certainly as fine as any ever rendered on similar occasions in An aconda. LOCAL BRIEFS A. D. T. messengers. Tel. The January Success. It's easy when yotj're drifting with the current down the stream, IN'hen the oars arp shipped beside you and the laughing ripples gleam; When there's naught to do but idle the cushioned seat and bask Ir. the happy, glowing sunshine, whi'e the water doe^ the task. But there comes a sudden waking to the fancy—and th(- dream When the time arrives that some on' has to—pull against the stream. Tlie fellow who's contented while the current bears him on Finds that every mile he travels shows a wished-for haven gone: Finds the water bears hi msoftly where the waiting chances lie. But unless he does some rowing it will swiftly bear him by; Finds that down the stream the niches that he looks ^or all are full, And that If he'd sfek the right one he must turn about and pull. But It's easy—very easy—just to float along and dream, Yet the man some time discovers that he cannot flosjt up-stream, he learns, top, that the world is full of folks who like to drift, the farther down th eriver there the current grows more swift; And he also learns in sorrow that suc cessful ones would seem To have no use for the fellow who will I never row up-stream. —Josh Wink.
