Tilt INTR MOUNTALIN'S ANACONDA DDARTMNTi CANNOT lOROFT IT AITTER FROM BEATTLE TELLS GOOD ONE ON FLANNERY. FORMER BUTTE FIRE CHIEF Now Captain of Helena"Ball Team, But When First Alarm Rang in He For got That Seattle or Helena Be longed to Northwest League. (Special to Inter Mountain.) Anaconda, May 2.-A former citizen of Anaconda and Butte, now residing in Seattle, tells in a letter to a friend In this city, dated April 30, a good- story on Jack Flannery, caqtain andl manager of this season's baseball team. The letter reads in part as follows: "Of course, you know there are a great many old Montanians living here, and when the Helena team opened the season we all turned dut to root and do all in our power to help the boys along. "Today just about the time the boys "Today, just about the time the boys were due to leave the hotel (Itainier Grand) for the ball park, I and a. num ber of other 'fans' were standing about the dlbby, killing time and waiting for them to start. "Buddenly a fire alarm was turned in, and before we were aware of what was going on the whole fire department had arrived and were pouring into the hotel. "Just then' Flannery, in his baseball uniform, stepped from the elevator. At the same time a cloud of smoke came up from a door leading into the cellar. "Well, you know that Flannery was at one time chief of the Butte fire de partment, and when he saw the firemen and smelled the smoke, he forgot th it A. G. Spaulding makes baseballs. "He started for the basement and h1 didn't 'bring up the rear either. As .ou may know, Flannery can go some on the diamond, but when It, comes to doing the 'hot-foot' through a 'burning and smoking basement he li certainly there with the goods. "lie disappeared so suddenly that the rest of the gang didn't know what had become of him, and as they were not fire-fighters they retired to the sldewalk and waited for the absent captain. "The time was getting short, and finally one of the boys exclaimed: "'I'll bet be's in the basement u Ith those firemen!' "A detail was sent to investigate, and sure enough there he was, right In the thick of it. "It took several minutes to convince. him that he was the boss of an aggre gation of crack ball toesers instead of chief of the fire department. "He finally broke away, however, and with a ulckly grin led the way to the car and arrived at the park in good time." JUNK DEALERS PAY. Pour From Butte Fined $50 Each in Anaconda Police Court. (t.percil to Inter Mountain.) Anaconda, May 2..'1toy Charli's, S(Wotty Forbes, Joe CIrecfi' and George Snm, son, four Butte junk dealers who :er . arrested here for buying junk without a license, appealed in the police court yesterday afternoon and were fined $.1o each for the offense, which is the low est under the law governing th<. mat ter. Theer has been during the past much old brass and copper stolen from cars near the foundry and at times from the works. It is known that this has been the work of small boys, who afterward sold the castings for junk. In fact, it was admnited by one of the IButte men that he knew of some of the junk was stolen. All of them, however, protested they did not know it was necessary to have a license to ply their business in the city. After the fines imposed, it is thought, more care will be exercised by the deal crs and thus do away with the steal ing of junk by boys. Hearst's Library. (Special to Inter Mountain.)
