I iV A A 1 I, II I) I'.S... Wilkeshlarre, Ia., May 26.--Yesterday was the quietest Sulllday i tile \\yotilng regiuont since the strike begatn. ()Oflices of the coal companies were de serted antd strike headquatrters were also deserted. lThe circular sent out ,ester day by Plrcsidentt Mitchell, warning the IPolish, Slavs and .ithunian tminers to re main away fromn the Ihitumintou. re gion of Virginia and \'est Virginia, where strikes are now in progress, was read in mtany of the chlirches. Stome of the clergy urged the striksrs to II law a-:idinlg and to be guided by their leaders so long as the lealer ' hvere faithfutl to the trust reposed int them: Secretary Mullabley of the Stationery Firemen's unionl reported today that, the pIll of the tIme eCmployd at the various collicrics has just been completed and that over cin per cent of the menC will quit work Junte 2. unless an eight-hour day is granted. Difference of Opinion. Another oflicer of the union says the percentage of engineers who will quit will not he nearly as large. The per cent of the pumllp mlln who will colme out is not knownt. If the local operators are to be believed, it will be small. The strikers her, are inclined to lool; with favor upon the action of the mine workers' contference inl ordering a strike of uminers in Virginia and WVest Vir ginia. They think it will hasten the decision in the anthracite regions. Meetings to discuss the advisibility of refusing non union and Itmiuminous coal during the progress of the miners' strike were held in \Vilkeslbarre, Kingston and Ashley this afternoon. The \Vilkesbarre meeting was more largely attended than the one Fri day evening. It was stated that no alltibn had been taken. The meeting at Kingston agreed to'take up the question tomorrow. The Ashley meeting indorsed the miniers' strike and will give the miners financial support.. The Blrotherhood of Jtailway unions- will also tender financial support, but will not. go out on a sympathetic strike. Child's Body Found. I[a ASSOCIATED I'RESS.] New York, May 26.-If they are within reach of the news it is probable that the memiers of the Ilumbert family who ate said to have swindled French and English Iankers out of about $12,ooo,ooo in the last 18 years are enjoying a good laugh at the disappointment which they have caused onil both sides of the Atlantic by their fail ure to be alJong the passengers on the steamshipl Umbria which has just arrived here. Iniformation had been received which led those at the head of the detective force here to expect to find at least two of the gang or the Umbria, but the sleuths who swarmed on the liner at quarantine were disappointed in their search and the Present whereabout of the Humberts remallins a mystery. In publlic circles, the belief is gaining ground that after all the family is not expected to coime to America, or at anyi rate not at this port. The Umbria seems to be the last of the trals-Atlantic lilcers on which they :light have slipped away from Europe before the hue and cry after them had attained worll-wide proportions. THROUGH VOLCANIC DUST Steamship Coya Sees Whale Probably Killed by Mount Pelee Eruption. [r1Y ASSo(I'I'rItn PtEISS.] New York, May 26.-Another steam s1hip, the Coya, which passed through clouds of dust from Mount Pelee has ar rived in port. One of her officers said: "Thirty miles from Saint Jucia, and just south of Barbadoes, we passed, onl the evening of the 8th, a large dead whale, around which hundreds of sharks were hovering. The Coya was one hour pass ing through the wreckage and smoke off St. Pierre, but the flashes of fire could be seen when we we. FeQ .ule away," into kindling wood. The occuplants raol fronl one of the houses betore it went to pieCes, and took refuge in another near by. but this house also sas crushed to splinters. In this house Sallie Itart and Annic Lawson were instantly killed. Mrs. Maxey Sims died in an hour and her little daugh ter. Vera, died soon afterward. Maxey Sims escaped with brolken fin gers. Lee Sims received several cuts on the head from falling timbers and was in ternally injured. Mr. Malhcy sustained a fractured shoul der and his leg was hIadly hurned by til' stove falling on him. lie also was inter nally injured and may die. Mrs. Lee. Simns received a bad, but not fatal cut on the head. Mrs. Mahey and her two chil dren escaped with slight bruises. it took some time to get the victims from the debris. Every physician in town was called and they were assisted by the citizens in relieving the sufferers as as much as possible. Jonesville reports that the storm wrought much damage there and that a Miss I.aw son was killed. Pacelot also reports one killed and sev eral injured. The property damage in Union is albout $5o.ooo. PI'KIN.-The failure of Germany to secure exclusive right to sell opium throughout the Chinese empire, for which privilege a German firm agreed to pay the Chinese government $15.ooo,ooo a year, seems to be assured, by the opposition of the better class of ministers and palace officials.
