PFEISTER IN FINIE FETTLE Holds Portland Down to Five Hits and Strikes Out Eight Men. [srI".ti.AL TO INTER htn.!.NTAiN.] Portland, August I8.-Portland's poor fielding was largely responsible for the defeat of the home team at the hands of the Spokane player* yesterday in the last game of the series. Spokane started the run-getting in the opening inning, scor ing three runs. Pfeister, who was in the box for Spo lane. pitched a magnificent game allowing but five hits. Many of the hits secured by the visitors, however, would have been easy outs had Portland been playing a strong game in the field. Pfeister, in addi tion to holding down the hits, struck out eight men, three of them in one inning. Errors by Deiscl and Weed in the first, combined with singles by McKevitt and Kelly, gave the fPunchgrassers a lead of three runs. In the third, Pfeister presented Deisel with a free pass to first, but followed it up biy striking out Shea. Whitbeck got a sin gle. and Muller popped an easy nly. Zei gler was good for a tripple-bagger, how ever, and with the aid or errors by Dona lihue and Elsey, Portland sent four men across the plate. Up to the seventh it hooked like a victory for the home team. A run in the seventh gave the lead to Spo kale for a second time and two more in the eight completed the story. both sides drawing blanks in the last.
